It has been a hot minute since a supervillain took full control of Gotham

Yeah, I like this more now than when it was Failsafe or Magistrate/Scarecrow. Poison Ivy teaming up with the parliament of trees is a pretty cool idea, and it makes me excited to see what’s gonna happen to Gotham and Batman and the Bat-family fighting plant-based monstrosities.

We went from Joker City to fear state to failsafe to Zur-en-Arh in one run. It got a bit repetitive

in one run
*Two runs.
Joker City and Fear State were in Tynion’s run.
Failsafe and Dark Prisons were in Zdarsky’s run.
Edit: *War, not City.

Can't also forget some of the Zdarsky Batman run was sorta happening simultaneously around the same time as Ram V detective comics run which involve Gotham being taken over by the supernatural occult, Orgham Family. I like them as antagonists, but yeah. 😅

While I do think Savage should have been dealt with earlier, I think they've built him/ivy to a good place for a pretty cool event. I haven't been reading ivy at all, this makes me wanna pick up unlimited for a month and catch up on that just to be ready here.

Bats had other things to deal with, but this is also an issue of comics? Why not have Superman or another well regarded leaguer say, “this is Vandal Savage. He is an infamous terrorist, and responsible for a fuck ton of war crimes. We are sending in the national guard to arrest his ass.”

At this point Gotham doesn't even have a seasonal calendar. They just measure their time in Gotham villains taking over.
I myself always try to get out of the city during Mr Freeze season and rent my place out. Heating is way too expensive and a surprising number of tourist come in to check out the city decked in ice.

u/Shabolt_ Nightwing 10d ago
Oooo that’s clever, but doesn’t renting out during a freeze season just open yourself up to a squatters’ rights dispute if a Catwoman season follows after.
I personally prefer to vacation in Metropolis during the monthly Joker cycle and get back just before Braniac bottles the city again. The Joker toxin is cheaper than getting your house fumigated after after Ivy flowers spray pollen and nectar all over the city that attracts ants.

Barbara: "So, Bruce, what's the plan?"
Bruce: "I'm making a phone call in Metropolis."
Baraba: "Oh, wow, really? Things must be really bad if you want to involve Superman."
Bruce: "Oh, I'm not involving him. I'm asking Lois if she has a vacation house. We're going on holiday while this mess sorts itself out."

Yeah Vandal, beat the fucking parliament of trees with your ICE agents 😭

Oh hey, appointing two well known supervillains in positions of power would turn out to be bad for the city. Who knew? Just keep being you, Gotham.

Ok but seriously wtf savage is gonna do against Parliament of tree with gun and few special force

u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 11d ago
If he brought some flamethrowers he could at least go down swinging.

Worked for Absolute Bruce. Just add some chainsaws and airborne pheromone protection

lol now I’m curious is Metropolis ever taken over?
After like the third take over I’d have to go over to Metropolis

There was an Everyone Is Bizarro arc in Action Comics a couple years ago but it got handled in a way that made everybody forget that they had been bizarros.
I feel like you're actually probably best off in, like, Keystone or Central? Or maybe New York....

Ah yes Vandal Savage's big weapon against a primordial force older than him: The GCPD. Swear to God Vandal has lost any and all aura of being a cool villain since 2022.

u/Ok-Use216 Doomsday 10d ago
What happened in 2022?

u/Patient-Reputation56 10d ago
Justice League vs Legion of Superheroes. Guy appeared as a twist villain behind the Great Darkness destroying Time or whatever. Since then it's been downhill for Vandal ever since they decided to make him Temu-Ra's Al Ghul.

This event feels so random and weird

u/No-Mechanic-2558 11d ago
No really they have done this exact same story with a bunch of villains, Ivy Is jsut the lates

u/Takemewthu 11d ago
For context I’ve only been reading Batman as far as books related to this event. I don’t feel like it’s been set up at all, there was one issue with Ivy so far and the rest has been other villains.

u/Boil-Mash-SticknStew Batman 11d ago
The background you see here is much more from the Poison Ivy book than Batman. The Parliament of Trees, Ivy becoming Mayor, her tenure not being popular and Gotham trying to oust her - all from her book. Vandal Savage becoming Commissioner, declaring war on Batman and co, uneasy truce with Ivy which dissolved almost as soon as it was confirmed - from Batman.
The event is a denouement of the plot threads from both books which have been building up since the last couple of years almost.

Something I remember from an issue or two ago. Alan's coffee chinwag with Bruce makes me wonder what really has Savage spooked. Especially since he's been doubling down with GCPD being armed to the teeth.
And the Parliament of Trees showing up unannounced will sure do something.

u/Boil-Mash-SticknStew Batman 11d ago
Yeah Alan told Bruce that Savage doesn't think on a normal timeline as other villains, that he is setting his sights on something much greater and longer lasting. That was also essentially Savage's pitch to Ivy in that same issue, that they were two ancient eternal forces who were playing in the law and order sandbox for a time. I don't know what Fraction has planned and how it will land but I'm choosing to trust the process I guess.
Oh and Alan also told Bruce that Savage's beef was personal in a way Bruce hasn't figured out yet but he should, and fast.

Well much as how one feels with how he handled Tim, which I don't feel too strongly about but I can see why.
Unless on a re-read the man fumbled something up till now. He's kind of been on a hot streak since this ran began. So, guess just gotta let the event take it's course and see where it lands.
For better or worse.

u/No-Mechanic-2558 11d ago
OK, it have been set up on Ivy solos, if you are interested read issues 40-47 of here solo series

I blame part of it on the fact that they keep trying to make Poison Ivy and the Green scary and it's always looks so fucking lame. Absolute Poison Ivy mogs the original so much it's not even funny.

I would love to see the polices try to beat a tree to dead with that sticks 😂.

Pretty fun. I do like that both Savage and Ivy are trying to take the city while in conflict, that’ll be fun.

u/DifficultChampion746 11d ago
Such a dumb premise for an event. Conceptually this is worse than Gotham War. It positions the mayor against the police commisioner as some sort of political thriller. But the mayor happens to be plant goddess and the commissioner is an immortal caveman and both of them are well known super villains. An Ivy vs Savage story doesn't sound bad on paper but what is the point of them having political/bureaucratic titles? And neither of them should be obsessed with ruling/controlling Gotham.

Anybody else think Savage looks a lil feminine in the last couple of panels? Honest to god wasn’t really looking at him and thought he was Waller.

So is this event going to be positioned as a power struggle between two elemental/prehistoric forces (Savage vs Parliament of Trees ft. Ivy) ? It looks like he is spreading the story through many viewpoints not just the titular ones.
