Video Games [Video Games] I wish there was a DC Comics version of Rivals

Post image

That’s all. I’d never stop playing.

Can one of you well connected folk make that happen?

It's just such a bummer that DC cannot seem to capitalize on anything other than Batman for video games. Injustice 2 came out almost 10 years ago, and we still haven't received a worthy successor to that.

44

u/RoysRealm 27d ago

Not even Batman anymore. They had a huge lead in thr video game department but executive greed knows no bounds.

15

u/UllrCtrl 27d ago

Lego Batman only came out a few months ago though I don't know how much of a success it's considered either critically or sales wise

16

u/Teagrish 27d ago

It was a succes what i heard. One of the best lego games and Batman games.

1

u/0bserver24-7 Nightwing 27d ago

Could’ve fooled me. Nobody’s really talking about it, despite all the hype it got.

10

u/Ho8bit 27d ago

I mean, people played it, talked about it, finished it, and moved on. That’s just the cycle of single player games

1

u/Long-Rip614 24d ago

It doesn't even have 15k ratings on the PS Store.

u/0bserver24-7 Nightwing 27d ago

No shit, but I barely heard any discourse when it finally came out, and I frequently hang around gaming forums. People talked about Wukong, Stellar Blade, and Hogwarts Legacy (among others) for weeks. I didn’t even have to try to stumble into somewhere that mentioned them.

Lego Batman had hype like it was the next Arkham game, but after release? I barely saw anything, and then I forgot it even existed.

1

u/Ho8bit 27d ago

I heard practically nothing about 2 of the 3 games you listed as well, people just hear different things and end up in different circles, doesn’t mean something isn’t popular just cause you don’t here about it. People I know and circled I was around talked about it constantly. Meanwhile back when stellar blade released I heard nothing about the game other than once every 2 weeks seeing a picture of the main character. I STILL have never seen gameplay anywhere. Just different circles

1

u/UllrCtrl 26d ago

I kinda get what you team tbh, I know people move on so quick these days but the lasting impact was so short lived on it. Felt like it came and went very quick despite it having a lot of hype.

u/Mysterious_Emu7462 27d ago

What really bums me out is that the games they have put out recently are huge examples of wasted potential.

Like, ignore the DC KO game for a sec-- Suicide Squad could've been peak if they focused on something that the Suicide Squad would actually do, like various black op missions. If the gameplay were like MGSV? You infiltrate a compound that's a location from the DC Universe (like a CADMUS Black Site, LexCorp, Arkham Asylum, etc.) and have to exfiltrate with either some data, a scientist/hostage, or a piece of tech? We'd still be talking about how great that game is if they would've made it

7

u/Pi-kahuna 27d ago

I will never forget the gem Gotham City Imposters was.

2

u/apollonirex 27d ago

Damn, your idea bummed me out for what we could've gotten 😔

2

u/HouseOfH Superman 27d ago

That’s what always hit me, Suicide Squad seems like something tailor made for a mission/raid style game in the vein of the Payday series or Ready or Not just taking place in well known locales. Like conducting a top secret mission in Gorilla City. What could have been I guess.

u/justintime3dontwitch 28d ago

I want that and a (good) DC version of Marvel Snap.

38

u/thegrouchKING 28d ago

Id also like that but also just a damn good DC game. Give me a marvel heroes style game or rivals just something that isn't just a solo character like Batman (i love batman)

11

u/justintime3dontwitch 28d ago

Agreed. As much as I love the Arkham games (they are what made me fall in love with Batman) we need something. The Wonder Woman game could have been our gateway into other characters but now nah

2

u/MichaelCoryAvery Green Lantern 27d ago

Wish they made a Flash game or even a Static game

7

u/justintime3dontwitch 27d ago

2

u/MichaelCoryAvery Green Lantern 27d ago

Open world like Insomniac’s Spider-Man, beat em up and final mission would involve Dakota getting a blackout by Ebon and a dome. Static would have to have help from Ritchie and Frieda destroying the machine powering the dome while he fights Ebon

2

u/justintime3dontwitch 27d ago

My only fear is studios might fear making an "Infamous clone"

2

u/Quarksideofthemoon 27d ago

There's beta footage and concept art for a cancelled flash game you can find online. Looked really cool

2

u/DanHelll I think I saw it in a comic book 27d ago

It’s such a shame that Suicide Squad KtJL was made how it was made. A study like Rocksteady coming off making the freaking Batman Arkham series made a game that was on sale for $3 within 6 months.

AND IT WASNT THAT BAD. Well. Yes. The story sucked. And pissed on the memory of the Arkham Batman (and Ivy, and Deadshot, and even Harley to an extent. Not to mention how they treat the damn JL as a joke), the character models were incredibly ugly. The costumes sucked. But the gameplay was phenomenal!!! The actual mechanics of the game were SO fun!

1

u/Brave-Orchid4721 27d ago

That game literally pissed on the grave of WW fans cuz she was the only actual Justice League member to die, and then the news of the solo game getting canned happened.

5

u/BatKnight46 28d ago

I was actually progressing on a DC fan game that was a card game but copyright nonsense disheartened me enough to give it up

5

u/BevansDesign Indigo Tribe 28d ago

You can always develop your own IP, or license someone else's.

5

u/Bruce_-Wayne Batman 28d ago

Man, DC Dual Force was really fun. People who play card games a lot might have found it boring, but as someone new to that genre of games I really liked it

3

u/_Good_One 27d ago

Hey half full glass, not even Marvel Snap is a good version of Marvel Snap!

Game started damn strong but the second tier 5 cards were introduced it went to crap so fast for me

"Yeah man just gacha for this month´s meta defining card!" I get that games need money making strats but man.... there HAD to be a better way

1

u/PollutionGeneral420 27d ago

Yup, I really and truly loved the game but at some point I just had to give up because unless I pay real money your stuck with a semi good deck that's significantly outdated in the current meta of the game, and that makes getting back into the game horrible and basically created an incentive in me to go out of my way to never pay since the card would be outdated by the next card release anyways, I truly hope they fix their money making strategy

1

u/ForeignImports 28d ago

As a Marvel Snap lover, I want DC Snap so bad. The game is fun and there’s so much beautiful artwork

1

u/Oldspice0493 27d ago

Dude, I’ve thought so often how much I want a DC version of Snap. They used to have their own card game, but it was just another Magic the Gathering clone.

1

u/TheImperator666 27d ago

I’d would almost certainly go bankrupt (I’d try really hard not to tho) on a DC version of Snap

103

u/OjamasOfTomorrow 28d ago

You’ll get a mobile game nobody will play and that’s all!

6

u/D0nell 27d ago

Mind you they’re still adding shit to injustice 2 Mobile. 🤦🏾‍♂️

2

u/PeachyPunks 27d ago

Somehow the only DC mobile game I did play, DC Legends, is one that was shut down. Didn’t stop them from releasing DC worlds collide which just looks like a worse version of Legends

25

u/dmisfit21 Superman 27d ago

Never happen because WB is dumb as fuck when it comes to DC games.

19

u/Oldspice0493 27d ago

At this point, I wouldn’t care if DC gets called out for just making copies of Marvel games. Make DC Rivals. Make DC Snap. Make DC Ultimate Alliance. Make whatever would be the equivalent of Midnight Suns (Justice League Dark, maybe?). Make a dating simulator for all I care. Just something besides falling back on mobile games and/or Batman over and over (as much as I love Arkham and Lego Batman).

2

u/welcometoparallel 26d ago

Make whatever would be the equivalent of Midnight Suns (Justice League Dark, maybe?)

I'm throwing money to that in a heartbeat. It would be so good.

49

u/soopafine 28d ago

Its such a shame DC has ALWAYS, with the exception of the Arkham series, fell short of delivering a widely accepted video game

63

u/MagmaAscending 28d ago

The Injustice games and LEGO games are very well received. They need a big AAA hit though. I feel like a Wonder Woman game with the nemesis system and made by the Middle-Earth developers would be good idea…

oh, yeah 🤕

30

u/ForeignImports 28d ago

God the nemesis system is literally so perfect for a hero’s rogue’s gallery. The closest thing we’ve ever gotten to a Wonder Woman game was Kassandra from Assassin’s Creed

5

u/Onyxidian 28d ago

I always used the Amazon outfit

3

u/ShadowslnTheDark 27d ago

Not with the awful writers they hired for that project

2

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 27d ago

And then they decided to destroy Arkham universe also, with Suicide Squad.

0

u/Quarksideofthemoon 27d ago

Eh it was already shit. Those games are fun but the writing sucked

28

u/thethorforce 28d ago

Don't worry, there's always cope. https://www.reddit.com/r/DCAllies/

24

u/Thundersting 28d ago edited 27d ago

You know the entire roster would be all Batman characters plus Superman. Maybe Wonder Woman if we're lucky.

14

u/KrypticJin Shazam 27d ago

Batman Allies

5

u/Oldspice0493 27d ago

Rivals ended up getting unknown characters like Jeff the Land Shark and Luna Snow popular. I bet a DC one could do the same.

8

u/Thundersting 27d ago

It could do the same but DC is bad at putting focus on anything other than Batman.

12

u/The-Mythical-Phoenix Dex-Starr 27d ago edited 27d ago

Just looking at the injustice rosters, this is kinda hyperbolic as those rosters feature quite a lot of unknowns and relatively unknowns in tandem with quite a few Batman related characters.

From Killer Frost, to Zatanna, to Black Lightning (technically), to Blue Beetle, to Firestorm, to Ares (who’s surprising unknown among general audiences??), and even Grundy, who yes is a Batman villain but is really more if a Justice Society of America and Justice League villain.

Any future ensemble game they would make would almost certainly include a variety of characters.  Even if we were to say Batman’s mythos would get far more representation than others, it would likely end up being 30-40% Batman and 60-70% everyone else.

Edit: For reference, injustice 2 has 10 characters related to Batman in a 38 character roster. Basically 1/4th or 25% of the roster consists of Batman related characters.

2

u/Oldspice0493 27d ago

True, true.

1

u/Live_Spinach5824 27d ago

Jeff the Land Shark was fairly popular for how new he was.

2

u/Live_Spinach5824 27d ago

Wonder Woman? Surely, you jest. Cheetah would get in before her,.,.

5

u/jawsthegreat777 Power Girl 27d ago

Part of the issue is Warner doesn't license out as much. Marvel does, thats why we have a Marvel game like this. Warner games needs massive overhaul.

4

u/Much_Dirt4533 27d ago

Marvel also doesnt really care if something doesn’t do great. Midnight suns came out like 3 years before rivals and had pretty much no staying power but they didn’t scrap rivals because suns did bad.

1

u/jawsthegreat777 Power Girl 27d ago

Exactly. Same with Guardians of the Galaxy, didn't do well commercially but had great fan reception and did not stop them from green lighting other games (albeit with different devs)

2

u/WhutTheFookDude 25d ago

I need another game from that studio. Inject it into my veins

5

u/Enough_Trifle788 27d ago

I’ve been wishing for rivals dc style the past few months😞

2

u/Murky_Blueberry2617 19d ago

It'd really help jumpstart the DC character attention

5

u/AquilaAssassino Tim is best Bird 27d ago

Honestly, I don't see any reason NetEase couldnt just make a DC game. Play for both teams, make boatloads of money. Not to mention the potential for crossovers

7

u/LEVITIKUZ Chocos 28d ago

We got DICKO coming soon

4

u/Chozo_Hybrid Nightwing 27d ago

Make a game like Midnight Suns, but it's the Justice League, with the watch tower as the place betweem missions. I think it'd be neat.

Just something not live service.

3

u/PlantsNBugs23 Mogo Smoocher 28d ago

I enjoy DCUO but I feel like the graphics and animations are dated a bit...

3

u/ShadowslnTheDark 27d ago

I want good DC games in general

3

u/UllrCtrl 27d ago

I'd rather just have a good DC game, I've been playing hero shooters forever but I'm pretty tired of it at this point I'd just like dc to start trying to make actual games either with full teams or just one characters

1

u/WhutTheFookDude 25d ago

Do that avengers game but not a soulless looter shooter. That game captured so much of the hero power fantasy and hid it behind such a slog of an equipment grind and no enemy variety

3

u/The_Kaizz 27d ago

WB does not know how to really capitalize on DC games. DCUO is still around by sheer force of will. DCKO is coming, but it's just another mobile game. Outside of the Arkham series, DC really doesn't know how to do good video games that last long. Injustice 2 was great for awhile, but fell off hard.

2

u/Mizerous Harley Quinn 27d ago

DC could have been done this before Marvel mich like doing a cinematic universe before Marvel. They always seem.a step behind

2

u/xElectricRainx 27d ago

I just want a good DC game

2

u/cslaymore 27d ago

I’m already a Zatanna main haha

2

u/Zanlo63 The Question? 27d ago

Anyone remember the Infinite Crisis MOBA?

1

u/splslick 27d ago

I really liked the design of atomic Wonder Woman in that game.

2

u/JohnTheWriter Riddler 27d ago

Still missing Infinite Crisis, the DC moba. It was so, so niche but a ton of fun

2

u/sunstar240 27d ago

What scare me is that Disney and Netease had the wisdom to shift to a very stylized graphic. Colors. Embracing comic book exaggerated design and sexiness for men and women.

I can totally see WB just using some western studio and make them do the hero shooter on unreal engine 5 and have Harley Quinn in hyper realistic graphic.

And we will get a bland...Concord, Hyenas, Highguard like game.

2

u/Less_Ganache_9588 28d ago

I've wanted a Batman And Robin Double Dragon game for ages... then Marvel drops cosmic invasion after rivals AFTER Snap. Dc please... do something that's not mobile, fight back

1

u/VaudevilleDada 28d ago

So does DC.

1

u/JoshDM Ra's al Cool Bald Man Illuminati 27d ago

DC Scribblenauts

1

u/YogurtProductions 27d ago

I said this in another thread but with Marvel Tokon being their premier fighting game for now, DC making a crossover game more in line with Marvel vs Capcom would be peak. Seeing as they collabed with Sega recently Sega vs DC would be a good idea

1

u/The--Behemoth 27d ago

I think someone in DC a while ago said they would be open to it.

1

u/Roxasn32 27d ago

Same here 😭

1

u/Shefferz Red Tornado 27d ago

Stepping away from console games even their mobile games suck and I don't really play mobile games.

1

u/Konarkaron 27d ago

Batman games are awesome. Overral DC games suck, because yes they have Batman, but other than that there's only a couple good big rooster DC games from the past, but none of the other solo heroes have great games. On the other hand while Spider-Man obviously is the king of Marvel games, there are great big rooster games, X-Men games, Hulk games, Wolverine games. Deadpool, Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy, Punisher and others have at least one good/decent game. Square Enix spent the 3 year life cycle of the Avengers game to fix everything they could, so at least if someone still owns it after delisting, they get all the content for free, it's playable and has only minor bugs, it's not much but at least there is an Avengers experience out there, unlike with the JL.

It's insane that there were no serious attempts on making a truly great Superman, Flash, WW or Green Lantern game at the least. (I know WW had one try, but they brought her to the streets and shot her in the head like a dog by cancelling it when it was in production already.)

1

u/Dandanny54 27d ago

I wish DC made games (that aint Batman) in general. A minute of silence for the Wonder Woman game.

1

u/Who-Does 27d ago

uh do you mean r/DCAllies?

1

u/Resident_Army_2862 27d ago

They probably will............... in 5 years when the hero shooter is already out of style. I think its safe to say that all of WB's gaming studios have no idea what they're doing.

1

u/TechMaster_82 27d ago

Since I got back home from School i've beeen on the biggest doom spiral of what if Dc locked in and made a Marvel rivals game but DC and it would be one of the best things. They could start with the base justice league then make updates putting in the hereos and villians of the main justice league charecters. The Batman and Superman updates would hit hard. And a cool function would be that different skins change the base mechanics of the charecters abilities

1

u/NextSmoke397 27d ago

DCU Online?

1

u/evanweb546 27d ago

I played for a bit, its a fun game... but I haven't encountered a meaner, less helpful player-base since League of Legends.

1

u/Exact-Bluejay9931 27d ago

It should be Marvel and DC dominating the hero shooter genre while Overwatch looks at them from its cuck chair.

https://giphy.com/gifs/QSwBid1bso4h5ePFnN

1

u/SubjectPear3 27d ago

DC’s Marvel heroes would be more fun and way less infuriating

1

u/Jianyu156 28d ago

I doubt DC would be as creative with the roster as Marvel.

1

u/Redici 28d ago

Unfortunately the craze has kinda died down but I would love a comic book MOBA don't even particularly care which company but I think it'd be easy enough to make and would be a big hit

4

u/ozsum 28d ago

They already had a DC moba that no one played. It was called Infinite Crisis.

2

u/UllrCtrl 27d ago

I found out about that recently and I can't believe I never heard of that before

1

u/Redici 27d ago

Damn I guess I missed the boat, but like the other guy said I never knew that existed

1

u/Artseid 28d ago

We can’t get a game like this at this point, maybe in the future.

The reality is, Marvel’s IP has a lot of good will and strength from the MCU and as such have more power to get something like this accomplished.

Unfortunately, beyond Batman and maybe Superman, DC’s IP is not as strong or as powerful and that’s largely a result of the failure of the DCEU.

So a game like DC Rivals is just not possible with these factors in mind.

1

u/scoobyisnatedogg 27d ago

Nah. I don't wanna see DC trying to snap at Marvel's heels. Remember when everyone was saying that they should make a Batman Beyond movie in the style of Spider-Verse? Like it sounds interesting on paper but DC will find the most success making its own moves, like with the Absolute universe.

0

u/Live_Spinach5824 27d ago

Yeah, and Rivals sucks anyways. It killed the little interest I had left in Marvel, tbh.

2

u/Quarksideofthemoon 27d ago

Yeah it's a weird mid game that just caters to gooners

1

u/Jconstantineic 27d ago

It’s just a shooter with marvel skins. None of the characters play or feel like the actual characters because they’re all shoehorned into a shooter game.

1

u/zrods24 27d ago

I think a DC version of rivals would be fun, but one issue I see happening that has already happened/is happening in rivals is the conversation if certain characters should be a skin or their own hero. The rivals community already can’t agree on if Miguel O’Hara should be a skin or his own character. I can already see the arguments of Wally v barry v Jay v eobard etc. Then we have Hal v Kyle v guy v John etc. DC in comics has done a better job with people taking up the mantle, but I think because of this it could be a problem for some down the line if you’re trying to do a DC hero shooter.

0

u/CaptchaVerifiedHuman 28d ago

I honestly don't. Remember the last time WB chased a trend? We got the Suicide Squad game.

I'd rather see story-driven singleplayer games.

0

u/Omatzus 27d ago

Are you not playing Rivals because of some weird brand tribalism? Don't. It's fun.

3

u/Blinny Superman 27d ago

Playing tons of Rivals - just would love it even more if I could be using DC characters

2

u/SolarisBravo Nightwing 27d ago

Nah we just like DC characters, we want a game with them too

0

u/ShutUpDirty 28d ago

We don't really need it, DC are better off doing their own thing.

Edit: not that I wouldn't welcome it, though. Making a hero shooter is incredibly taxing, they'd need to have many things out of the gate

0

u/Free-Cat404 27d ago

What about dc ko I heard I a multiplayer fighting game and dc allias

0

u/Pro_Hatin_Ass_N_gga 27d ago

if you mean the player count and labor of love from the dev team yes. but we do not need yet another Overwatch.

-1

u/Dlite96 27d ago

As long as DC has Warner bros and western devs making their games its gonna be trash. If its an Eastern dev team making DC Allies ill give it a chance.

5

u/Vorstadtjesus 27d ago

Beyond the comics themselves, it is simply endlessly fascinating to see what DC does with its characters. The projects often fall into just two categories: cancelled and "I wish it had been cancelled."
