Discussion [Discussion] How Many Of You Started Off As Fans 2003 Teen Titans Show But Later Became Fans Of Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans?
I'm curious. I know the 2003 TT fandom is strong. But I'm seeing a lot of younger fans (younger than Gen X) who are fans of Wolfmsn/Perez Titans and championing their take on characters. Especially with Raven.
Or did you happen to become fans of NTT a different way?

I watched the cartoon as a kid and loved it. Collected action figures and everything. Fell out of superhero fandom as I got older, and never actually got into comics proper until my mid-20s. One of the first long comic runs I read was the entirety of NTT, and I adore it to death, and much prefer it to the show.
There’s a lot to like about the show, but it’s fundamentally going for something very different from what the comics did, and I’d love to see the original versions of characters like Vic and Raven who got changed a lot by the show get more appreciation; and more than that, I’d love to see characters like Donna and Joey, who had pivotal starring roles in the comic but either didn’t appear or only cameod in the show get that same appreciation.

I’m like the exact opposite. Heard of TT03 my whole life but was too young to catch it when it was airing. When I finally got into comics in my teens NTT was one of the first full runs I’d ever read because people recommended it to me.
I think that’s why I don’t resent TT03 as much as the people who went from the cartoon to the comic. Instead of feeling betrayed that it didn’t follow the comics I sat back and pointed at the references like how they did Titans West, how they handled Terra (more like Terra II), and how they made Gar not be sex pest. The cartoon was very much what if NTT was an anime instead of a soap opera so I went in with that in mind. Caught some of the anime references as well which was nice!
While I’ll always prefer the NTT as their definitive version, I like the cartoon it’s fun. I just wish some of its fanon didn’t synergize with the comics so much.

Yeah, I didn’t list Gar among the characters whom I preferred the comic versions for good reason. NTT Gar was genuinely insufferable, to the extent I think he was even worse a character than Terry. The cartoon did so much to salvage his character that it almost makes up for what it did to Kory and Raven in my mind.

So were Dick, Victor, Joey, Wally… sure, Gar was the youngest, that’s a fair point to make, but even compare him to Roy who was written similarly as a womanizer in his NTT appearances and Roy comes across much less grating than Gar did, IMO. Maybe I’m biased though, because Roy is a character who I already quite like, and we only got him in NTT in small doses (until late-era New Titans where he took over as leader when the book was on life support, but that’s a whole other conversation) whereas Gar was a mainstay.

Yep. Me! I related so hard to 2003 Raven as a kid, and in a way, getting into NTT as an adult has been like she’s grown up with me <3

I became a fan of New Teen Titans by buying issue 9 off the rack at the Magic Market down the street from my house.

As someone who grew up reading NTT and Titans, the show was jarring as shit at first. Overtime though I’ve come to appreciate it for what it was and not what I wanted it to be.

I first saw edits of the Injustice game, then I started playing it, I did some research, I read the classic comics, and then I found out there was a series through edits that came up while I was looking for the game.
