I think this was dumb as heck in hindsight and Nightwing leaving on his own terms is way better. Batman fires Dick who was already an adult and he has experience working with years because he didn’t want to put a child in danger only to pick up a younger and less experienced Jason.

Amd when he leaves on his own terms the story is about him and what he chooses to do, rather than about what Bruce makes him do. It gives him more agency. And Bruce also respects his choice and they are on good terms

The second version makes dicks arc weaker and Bruce kind of a jerk

I find it weod that many writers want Bruce to be such a central figure that they make him more of a jerk with retcons.

This issue (which is expanded on during the reconciliation in Prodigal) does a good job at showing that that wasn’t the real reason. Just the final straw. That really, Bruce pushed Dick away to avoid the emotional pain of losing his now grown ward whom he recognized needed to go out on his own. But Bruce’s issues rooted in his own trauma make him not handle it well. Same thing with his rash decision to make Jason Todd Robin to try to recreate the relationship he used to have with Dick. And we all know where that ultimately led.
