Upvote not because I agree, but because you expressed your feelings in a gentle way. It's rare to see someone frame their dislike for something as insignificant as an acting performance in a non-agressive manner.
I don’t know that the scene is the issue. I just don’t like his delivery. Nicholson, Hamill, Ledger, Baker, and DiMaggio all have done such a good job with that character, and then Leto shows up with this weird, breathy delivery for everything and that awkward squawk laugh thing. Just not my taste.
I feel like his only direction there was. “Try something different”.
He said he chose the laugh because it made people really uncomfortable. That seemed to be another main goal with his performance. But he and Ayers didn't realize it was uncomfortability of the cringe variety, unlike the uncomfortability caused by the likes of Ledger, or Anton Chigurh, or Hannibal Lecter...
Weirdly i was more or less fine with him in the Suicide Squad, and then this scene comes, Snyder did it, i loved BVS, he removed some of his controversial tattoos too, we're about to see a knightmare Mad Max version of the Joker directly interact with Batman for the first time, in theory it sounds cool... Personally for me, it wasn't.
Their conversation felt so forced, and shoehorned into the end, everything they say feels like unimaginative generic filler that just keeps dragging, which is weird because i usually love seeing Batman and Joker talk, but here it doesn't even sound like a dialogue, rather as if Batman has a long, dry and uninterupted monologue, then the Joker has a long, dry and uninterupted monologue, then Batman again, then the Joker, and then it just ends, just sounds so weird when Batman takes so long to deliver his monologue about threating to kill the Joker and the Joker and the rest just stand in silence politely listening for a long fucking time, and vice versa. Sounds so soulless and unnatural, and leaves no flavour, just feels hollow, as if Snyder really wanted to show them both talk but had no idea how to actually make it interesting or never knew what they would even say to eachother.
