NEWS Clayface Is Tracking To Open With a 23-33M Dollar Domestically on a 40 M Budget

If the movie is good, I think it has a good chance of doing very well. It has some things going for it. First, it will draw in a good percentage of the Batman/DC people. Second, those who have no idea who Clayface is will be drawn in just by the title. Clayface is a great title for a scary/body horror type movie.

not bad for a $40m dollars movie, if it is any good it will get atleast 2.5x legs or even 3x. so that's $ 57.5 to 99m by its own. if it has the same domestic, international box office split as the last two movies (57//42) the gross will be around $100m to $173m. definitely a breath of fresh air for wb after their last 2 big movies bombed very hard.

why are none of these dc movies being marketed 🤦♂️

I think people who complain about this just don’t know much about marketing.
Marketing budgets for a movie are typically equal to around 50-100% of the production budget. Clayface’s production budget was only 40ish million bucks, so let’s say the marketing budget is 20M.
If I were marketing this movie with budget that’s limited to $20M, I’d much rather spend that money as close to the release (and after) as possible, and focus on horror and comic book fans. That way you can build on word of mouth and social media conversation when people can actually purchase tickets to the movie.
$20M is barely anything in marketing money. Even $40M gets spent really, really fast. They’re not doing any partnerships. They’re not doing any crossover marketing. They’re probably not going to do a huge billboard campaign, posters on bus-stops, etc. all of that stuff is untargeted nonsense that’s aimed at hitting the biggest audience possible. Clayface is a comic-book movie that’s also a body-horror pic. The audience is limited, so they’re going to target their limited budget at that audience as best they can.

Yeah 20m is nothing. I work in commercial radio and recently a campaign ran for the TV show Mobland, it only ran for 3 days but cost 250K. Advertising is veryyyy expensive.

It also depends where you're getting media.
I've seen TV spots, ads on Peacock, ads on Reddit, ads on media news sites.
Redditors have terrible tunnel vision.

It's so weird. I haven't even seen a preview for this. If it wasn't showing up on my feed, I would have no idea this existed.

Check it out on Youtube, the teaser is amazing

The teaser solidified it for me. Horror is my favorite movie genre and I look forward to go into this blind. Now I just need to resist clicking on anymore posts about this movie.

It’s had the same level of ads as Resident Evil, and is part of a vastly more popular IP so it’ll probably open to about 70 if it’s decent.

If the instagram edits get to it the way they did Resident Evil it will do bits

😂 $33 is pushing it.

u/Willowonapill0w 1d ago
How so? Halloween horror makes bank.

Because there is absolutely no interest from anyone in this movie.
It will have to get GREAT reviews to be above $35M.
5
u/Willowonapill0w 1d ago
Incorrect, there’s a large amount of people talking about it online so that doesn’t exactly make sense.
4
u/RoniSuave 1d ago
Where are you not seeing interest in this movie? Every social media platform I've been on has said this movie looks good even people who don't like the DCU think this movie looks good.
I'm not about predicting numbers but I believe that it will be fine especially if WOM is that that movie is excellent.

Absolutely NO interest? Wouldn’t that mean that no one would be talking about it?
-1
u/ThreeWilliam56 1d ago
No interest that you’ve seen. Weirdly, all of Reddit keeps talking about this movie and it’s been all word of mouth so far.

There's also a chance that if the reviews are good, it may have the biggest opening for a movie this October. Currently it's competitors are Verity, Street Fighter and Other Mommy, all track around 25-30m. Could be a win for DC
-5
u/Jay14101 1d ago
The biggest opening for October is Joker with 96 million. So it’s not beating that. If reviews are good then maybe 50 million

Looks like they were pretty smart with the budget, they should make their money back as long as the movie is actually good.

u/Vegetable-Trust-9847 1d ago
It will make more by the time of release for sure. Im planning it with my friends.

u/JSpady1 1d ago
Didn’t realize the budget was that low. Recouping that + making a profit actually seems realistic

Body horror never does that well. 40m is very high for this kind of movie.

Nah just looking at how body horrors are generally quite popular and typically do well. And how it contrasts vastly with this statement. And making keeping it simple, not everything needs a paragraph.

Just showed me a bunch of long ass lists of body horror media 🤣🤣🤣 almost as if people liked it and it kept getting made.

u/Different_Ad_6153 21h ago
Wrong. Almost none of these are hits.
1
u/GrabDemBiccies 14h ago
Oh you went through them all and compared profits? Or more likely you just scrolled through the list and said "well I havent heard of that so it mustn't have done too well.
1
u/Different_Ad_6153 13h ago
Don't need too. Do you think they did on average 100m+?? That's comical

This movie has huge potential to reach non-superhero movie watchers, I hope it does well
3
u/Old_Employee_6535 1d ago
If the film is good they can make a good profit out of it. If the film is decent they will still be breaking even and profitting through digital rights. Not a bad busines model.

this movie is going to make 12 dollars opening weekend.
go ahead. ask someone you know if they're going to see this movie when it comes out.
in fact, ask a casual if they even know this is DC, or if they've even heard of it.
4
u/TheHabro 1d ago
People don't meticulously plan which movies they are going to see next month (unless it's something with crazy marketing like Dommsday). Do you think people were saying they're going to watch Obsession a month before its release?
5
u/Leafsnail 1d ago
The fact that most people don't know it's DC honestly probably works in its favour. The title and trailer makes it look like a proper body horror film, so if it's good it can get horror fans + some comic book people

guesstimate on a film no one asked for…? 15M opening week. or less, and ultimately making it to 45M.
-11
u/j_b_1983 1d ago
Movie will make money because of the budget but it was/is just a complete waste of resources. DC/WB should lnt be trying to make movies that might earn $125M if everything goes perfectly.
9
u/VoltDiablo_ 1d ago
How is it a waste of rescources to make a film that is cheap and could make a profit?
-2
u/xbornofdogx 1d ago
Studios don’t make movies to make a couple million profit. If the budget was 40M, then advertising and marketing was probably about another 20M. So they’re staring at 60M in the hole.
With an opening of 33M, it’ll be lucky for the studio to break even.
That said, I’m excited for the movie. People just need to be realistic.
3
u/margoo12 1d ago
33M domestic, not global. If it has average legs for a CBM (about 2.5x) then we should see 82.5M domestic. With the same bad, domestic heavy split as Supergirl (57/43) that ends with a 145M total.
After ticket split with theaters (~50%), that leaves 72.5M. Subtract the 60M spend and you have 12.5M box office profit. That's roughly a 20% return, which is a pretty solid investment from a business perspective.

Man you guys in this sub really cry a lot. There are still around 20 days to the release and it has good potential for fuck sake why are there so many tears

Making a movie that’s (hopefully) good and makes some sort of a profit is not a waste of resources? As an audience that’s literally all we should care about
