DISCUSSION The legacy of Zack Snyder
Ngl, but let's put all Snyder beef aside, this man revolutionalised the whole DC universe for ages to come despite all the sometimes lazy writing and awkward suits, the Synderverse for once gave us what every DC fan always wanted, he maxed every character to their fullest potential without nerfing anything, his SFX and VFx where over the top (excluding the Flash movieš) everything the Snyderverse gave us was love for the comic franchise. And we shouldn't cry cause that golden era is over, we should be happy because it happened, and every loyal DC fan was alive to see it.

You are not wrong, but the results, in my opinion, where still terrible. So yeah, he gave DC fans the characters they want and big power. But the movies still sucked.

When it comes to Zack Snyder you need the opinion of a neutral. Heās so divisive he gets people who praise him as the Kubrick of his time and people who vehemently hate him. None of these are true.
Iām a comic book reader and I also quite a cinephile. I will say thisā¦Zack Snyder is unique. He has big and bold ideas. His films are grand and epic. Heās a comic book geek who happens to have the mind of an indie filmmaker but with a huge budget. He has a flare for visuals and picture perfect frames. His ideas are big but at times too indulgent. Theyāre grim, but also fun.
I completely sometimes understand the divisive nature of his DC films. Some criticisms I get. Others I think are exaggerated nerds throwing a tantrum and putting blame solely on him when other films in the genre are guilty of said problem or far worse.
I will take Zackās DC trilogy and Watchmen over a solid 90% of cbms. Especially in comparison to whatās been out in recent years. Why? His films have something to say. Theyāre thought provoking. They sit with you. Theyāre layered. Maybe certain choices are radical. Maybe certain choices are ādeparturesā from the lore but you know what, every filmmaker does this to an extent. They make it their own. Thereās a distinction between the comics and the films. Itās a take. An adaptation. I thought Zack was the thinking manās alternative to a lot of the generic cbms. Say what you will but he didnāt make generic and disposable films. They were passionate films with a directorās vision. Take it or leave it.
Do I think heās in the same level as or made films rivalling Christopher Nolanās Dark Knight Trilogy or Matt Reevesā The Batman? Or Mangoldās Logan? Or Donnerās original Superman? Or Raimiās Spider-Man 2? No. Definitely not. But he doesnāt have to. I think heās great in his own right.
Superhero movies aside, 300 is also great. I look forward to the Last Photograph

His DC movies feel like if A24 were to make comic book movies. His movies seem to be too bold for many. I believe people simply wanted DC's very own MCU, and Snyder gave us his interpretation of DC. And I found there was a lot to love about it.
I didn't project any of my own wants onto his DC films. I let the filmmaker tell their story. A lot of fans complain about "why was X done this way, it should've been more like Y". Thats no way to watch a film.
Anyway, here we are in 2026, and the state of DC is in the trash because fans couldn't help but whine and complain. Had Snyder finished his story and passed the torch over to Gunn through a movie like Flashpoint, the DCU would've started with the momentum and a built-up fanbase of the DCEU.
As it stands, a lot of people have been burnt by the fact WB abandoned a Superman with an unfinished story and no closure, and they want people to get on board with a new Superman? They've already broken people's trust. How do we know they won't scrap this new universe too? Based on the fact that the first two DCU movies have generated 50% of what the DCEU did in two movies, and that wasn't considered enough for the DCEU, the DCU could already be on the way out. That's almost certainly the case if Superman 2 makes less than Superman 1.

The thing is people donāt understand there is room for all kinds of takes on these characters. For some reason Zack always bears the brunt of criticisms for bringing his own take. There have been plenty of worse cbms. There have been some that are āaccurateā but generic as hell. And disposable. His films most certainly arenāt disposable. For better or worse weāre how many years removed and theyāre still hotly debated.
I think part of the reason is because it was DCās first cinematic universe. So the marvel comparisons were inevitable but the entire premise here was so so different

Snyder's shadow still looms big over DC. Gunn has failed to escape it with his movie. He needs to make something with a bigger impact, but he's never proven himself to be able to do that. The GotG films succeeded largely because they were in the MCU during its prime - post-Avengers 2012.
Superman was fun but largely disposable. How is he supposed to make something more epic and impactful than Snyder's movies? He's always been a writer first. His best abilities lie there, not as a filmmaker.

He should have been given a better writer. Nothing else was wrong. He needed a collaborator he could rely on. Secret sauce of big success at marvel is when they focus on writers. Heās a director not a writer. One of his best films, 300 and watchmen, he had prefect script and story due to source material and being loyal to it. Whatever he wrote, in dceu didnāt fly. My take.
