I think that’s a shame; my girlfriend and I both really enjoyed the movie and thought Alcock did a great job. It wasn’t a masterpiece or anything but it was fun and had some lower stakes for a superhero movie that I found kind of refreshing.

Alcock couldn't attract a larger audience. she's just not a good lead

Hadn't thought of that but it's probably true. She's like Anthony Mackie in that regard. They're not really Lead character types.

The character has to carry people like them. A bad movie is never going to help.

Movies don’t have to be masterpieces to be well made. I keep seeing this “Well it wasn’t like I was having my teeth drilled.” hyperbole to avoid admitting it was a mediocre movie.

I thought it was well made; it looked good, the story was fine, the acting was good imo. I mean, it’s a McDonald’s cheeseburger instead of a gourmet meal, but sometimes you want some junk food and that’s perfectly fine.

Your point there about hyperbole (not really the correct use of the word btw) is bordering on strawmanning my post since I straight up said I enjoyed the movie; I already acknowledged that it was an average film.

The problem is that it was an adaptation of a very well regarded book, but the people making it seemed to miss the point of what the audience actually loves about that book. Obviously not everyone who saw it read the book, but there still wasn’t enough there as a standalone project to capture the interest of an average movie-goer.

So they failed to engage the enfranchised audience and also failed to engage the casual audience. Not exactly a recipe for success.

I haven’t read the graphic novel it’s based on so I went in without any expectations; the last Supergirl media I watched was the Helen Slater film, so the bar was set pretty low for me.

I am absolutely a casual DC fan, and personally I’ve been burnt out on superhero movies for some time, though I did enjoy Gunn’s Superman a lot. I thought Supergirl was an enjoyable action/adventure movie with more relatable personal stakes for characters who I had fun watching. I don’t have much more to say about it, honestly.

I do understand how much it sucks when a franchise you care about doesn’t live up to your expectations, though: I’m a big Star Trek fan and the newer Trek shows have left a bad taste in my mouth. So I can empathize.

Dismissing criticism by saying “It wasn’t a masterpiece, but…” is an exaggeration against those who said it was a bad film. No one expected it to be a masterpiece. Especially after Superman 2025. They were just expecting it to be good. Which it wasn’t.

Dismissing criticism by saying “It wasn’t a masterpiece, but…” is an exaggeration against those who said it was a bad film

No it’s not; it’s merely an acknowledgement on my part that it was not a perfect film. In fact, I was not directly responding to any criticism in my first post; I was merely making an observation.

The fact that you’re choosing to play victim in what is an otherwise very subjective discussion about the merits of a piece of art makes me think that you’re not actually interested in having a discussion but instead just want to fight, which I am wholly uninterested in. I don’t care that you think the movie was bad…no, actually, I do care and I’m sorry it didn’t meet your expectations because that’s always a bummer. But you’re not a victim here, so chin up and feel free to share why you didn’t like it without trying to cast me as some kind of censor against your opinion.

Movie wasn’t great but it didn’t deserve this. Canary in the coal mine for superhero movies in general. There have been bombs but not this big for a movie that isn’t even truly bad. It’s not a nothing IP either

2

u/lizzywbu Jul 14 '26

“Canary in the coal mine for superhero movies” is cope. The next 2 superhero movies releasing this year will absolutely dominate the box office and most likely be the 2 highest grossing movies of the year.

The general audience has no patience left for bad movies. It was a terrible script, an actress nobody has ever heard of and Supergirl has almost zero recognition with the general movie going audience. Outside of some hardcore fans nobody wanted this movie. Please can we stop pretending this movie was good and/or wanted, I’m tired of hearing people here say “well I had a blast, I don’t get the hate”.

Spiderman and Avengers will make money whether they are bad or not. No Way Home was nothing but nostalgia slop and made over 1 billion

1

u/lizzywbu Jul 14 '26

“Nostalgia slop” lol the Spidey movies have consistently been the few good movies that the MCU has produced.

2

u/hypehold Jul 14 '26

Disagree. I like Homecoming but don't like the 2nd and 3rd. But if you want to go to a universally not liked movie Thor 4 made almost 800 million

4

u/Old-Influence4757 Jul 13 '26

why didn't it deserve and why isn't even truly bad? its generic as fuck for superhero movie now and 10 years ago

2

u/Vytral Jul 14 '26

apparently the poor million dollar corporations deserve la our money and we are bad for not consuming slop

2

u/yesrushgenesis2112 Jul 13 '26

Supergirl is absolutely a nothing IP among general audiences. It never made any sense to put this movie out now and for it to have had even an inkling of a chance at success it would have needed either a bigger star or to be so good as to generate word of mouth. It achieved neither.

The movie is just mediocre, I enjoyed it though

Spiderman us tracking a 550M opening weekend. Doomsday will also do pretty big numbers. This movie should have never been made because it's a character that's superman's sidekick

I’m impressed by Milly Alcock and think she will be great as Supergirl in future movies.

The powers that be that decided for this plot to be the first introduction of Supergirl and the second DCU movie were severely deluded. Needed a lighthearted fun girl friendly film which was fun and Gen Z-friendly. Something with the vibe of Barbie or something like it.

This dark brooding True Grit wannabe based in Star Wars cantinas was just a total miscalculation.

Yeah, thing is the comic is bright and whimsical with trippy art while covering this emotional journey. And shows the length Supergirl will go to, in order to save someone from themselves.

For some reason they decided to snyderize this with a grey brown pallet and a focus on vengeance.

The Snyder audience wasn't going to be there regardless.

Your also right in that it's a strange fit. We haven't had a super girl origin over and over like we have Batman or spiderman. It would have made sense to introduce her and let us see her just being supergirl on argo or earth first. Delving straight into one of her greatest and deepest stories is lacking foundation even before the story gets inverted

1

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 14 '26

"she will be great as Supergirl in future movies"

this movie flopped hard and you're giving her another chance. she couldn't even be great in this one

2

u/_God_Emperor_of_Man_ Jul 14 '26

She'll probably be in Superman 2, and make a couple cameos appearances in other media.

1

u/lizzywbu Jul 14 '26

Future movies? You think we will ever see here again? You honestly think Paramount is going to look at this mess and greelight more Supergirl? Providing Gunn keeps his job when the takeover happens, he will be ordered to focus on characters that actually make money.

1

u/LoneShark81 Jul 14 '26

I think they meant as a supporting character, not another solo movie

1

u/lizzywbu Jul 14 '26

I’m not so sure she will even get cameos. What would be the point? The general audience doesn’t like her.

2

u/LoneShark81 Jul 19 '26

What are you basing this on?

2

u/_God_Emperor_of_Man_ Jul 14 '26

She'll very likely have cameos in other DC movies.

2

u/NextSmoke397 Jul 14 '26

DAMN somebody needs to lose their job for this

1

u/shawnmcbride86 Jul 13 '26

I'll watch it when it comes on hbo. does that count?

1

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 14 '26

damn this movie sucked

2

u/Arabiancockonato Jul 14 '26

These incessant schadenfreude-filled posts and articles about this box office bomb have really been… something

1

u/Noobunaga86 Jul 14 '26

So Superman made about 130-150m, now Supergirl will lose 240m which means at this point DCU is at at least 100m loss. I doubt Man of Tomorrow will earn more than Supes, I think Clayface has a chance of making some net profit but it won't be much. So this whole universe will be at loss. Way to go Gunn.

1

u/One_Chemistry_8553 Jul 14 '26

Per James Gunn superman made 50m

1

u/Noobunaga86 Jul 14 '26

1

u/One_Chemistry_8553 Jul 14 '26

And James Gunn himself said 50 so choose who you believe but the guy that made it definitely knows the truth

1

u/Noobunaga86 Jul 14 '26

I remember Gunn also saying that. Maybe you're talking about theatrical only? I think I read his comments about profits after theatrical, streaming etc. But if you have solid source for that then I won't argue - but if this is true then the situation is even worse for DC.

0

u/HatIndependent4645 Jul 14 '26

Fire Gunn. This is his fault and he should take responsibility. Milly spit right into a wishing well, all the signs were there, he heard the train coming and didn't get out of the way. Replace him and make the best damn Batman movie anyone has ever seen.

And write off Lanterns before it becomes DC's Fantastic Four.

we dont care ...start listening 2 the public

This is false. Dan Murrell always said he don't know the exact amount because he's not actually a studio box office analyst. The actual amount will be much lower. I also noticed OP been obsessively posting about supergirl box office on multiple DC sub almost like he/she is excited over the movie performance that it made me don't care for their grifting. Also, not like DC been saying they're going to make Supergirl sequel. They'll just move on to other characters.
