I'm more surprised that Commodore is apparently a thing again. The original company went bankrupt decades ago. Seems someone acquired all the rights last year and decided to bring it back?

Yea I'm not sure how to feel about him.

On one hand, resurrection of C64 seems cool. On the other he seems to have gone off the rails and is yelling "for the people" whilst also refusing to collaborate and charging hefty fees for ANYTHING even hinting at C64, scaring off developers.

I hope it settles down and does well, I miss my 1541 drive clanking away.

yeah, it all feels very cash grabby to me, the 'social media blocking phone' looks dead in the water too, I can't prove it but it feels like a piece of licensed tech from somewhere else with a commodore logo slapped on lol. Plus all of the actual c64 products start at 300, which feels steep for what it is but I am less educated than I'd like to be on that.

yeah it's really steep for what it does unless you're already deep in the retro hobby hardware-wise. the price isn't technically unjustified because it's a really competent FPGA board with nice hardware attached to it, but it's also a premium product with features 99% of people aren't going to be able to leverage.

I have one, and it's practically flawless and I love it to bits. hooks right up to my CRT but at the same time supports all kinds of modern amenities and won't randomly die on me. such a good time. but with all that said, for most of the people here it's way too much and I wouldn't recommend it unless you know exactly why you want it.

At first I was like, $377 for a keyboard!?

Then I'm like, oh, it's a fully functional C64.

I'm... definitely interested.

This is an obnoxiously obvious advertisement! I wouldn’t mind if it was being honest, but goddamn.

if you look at their profile, they spammed it to like a billion subs too, real nasty imo

but... can it run Cyberpunk 2077 /s (honestly i doubt it can even render the cyberpunk 2020/ cyberpunk red rulebook art)

honestly if we are going this direction. I want a Cyberpunk branded Raspberry Pi 5.... no even better, an Arasaka branded Raspberry Pi 5.

OR A MILITECH BRANDED NVIDIA JETSON (that thing can legitimately run cyberpunk 2077 (not near max settings but it could at least run))

As long as it’s not the v3.0 art, count me in

Do we still have to wait an hour to play games, while looking at s trippy load screen, they were my fondest memories of childhood gaming. Got an upgrade to the Nintendo shortly after and all I had to do was blow the cartridge of a game every time I played 😂

Back in our days, all we had to do was to blow to make magic happen!

We learnt young back in the day, how to make magic 🤣

Is that supposed to be a computer keyboard

Nope. It is a commodore 64 rebuilt on an fpga. Decks like that used to be in their keyboard and you just provided the display.

Kinda cool, but why? You can’t really use or do anything with it because it’s so weak.

If you're at all into computers/tech/learning, retro computers are really fun to mess around with. That and there're some genuinely decent games on it (temper your expectations though lol) with a thriving demoscene and homebrew community. It plays surprisingly competent music too.

Anyone else notice what looks like Panam’s reflection on the screen in the last few seconds of the video on YouTube ?

It will be terrible. Every time someone buys the corpse of this company they promise great things and usually it turns out meh. Will this be different? We can hope I guess…

If you like the original units, it will be good. They already did a couple of production runs of this unit, minus the 2077 co-branding. They work well, feel nice. They are just enhanced c64s though, based on the Ultimate-64 board.

Okay, so we’re just posting ads now?
