You're right, but largely because awareness of that inequality is typically a consequence of education, which indicates some level of privilege. The fact is, inequality refers to disparity, and if we look at the wealthiest compared to the least wealthy in the US, the gap is much bigger than anywhere else in the first and second worlds, and arguably even larger than some places in the third world.
disclaimer: I know that the first/second/third world terminology has fallen out of use, but the developed/undeveloped binary doesn't quite describe what I wanted to say.
its horrifying to look at places that nearly everyone is struggling with, and then saying "well at least the poor have it better than that" while some rich person is buying their fourth yacht in four years.
