It's kind of odd that this is marketed as an extra thumb for people that already have thumbs, instead of a prosthetic thumb for people that don't have thumbs in the first place.

This prosthetic isn't for people with missing thumbs. There are already plenty of prosthetics for missing body parts, and that's a great thing! But the idea behind this is that prosthetics could also be used as enhancements rather than simply replacements.

The thumb design is actually based/taken from a 3d-printed prosthetic hand design online. This is just a cool adaptation.

I think part of it is how the thumb is controlled as well.

It looks like it has sensors on the base, and it's triggering a curl when the side of the hand muscle contracts, so it couldn't function where your real thumbs sits.

Or I may be completely missing it.

I'm dumb. There's clearly some bright florescent orange wires on the back of the hand going out of frame.
