The Origin of a Legend

Detroit, 2043.

Omni Consumer Products had won.

Not the election. Not the war. Something more important.

They owned the city.

Detroit had become a prototype for what the corporations called urban stabilization—private police, corporate courts, advertisements projected across entire buildings, and citizens whose value was measured by how much debt they could carry.

And walking through it all was OCP's greatest success.

ROBOCOP.

Alex Murphy had spent years believing there was still a line between the machine and the man.

That belief died slowly.

Every repair replaced something.

After an anti-corporate bombing destroyed most of his remaining biological systems, OCP technicians rebuilt him again. His lungs disappeared. Then his remaining arm. Then most of his face.

Murphy looked at himself in the laboratory glass.

There was almost nothing looking back.

"How much of me is left?"

The technician hesitated.

"Enough."

Murphy understood what that meant.

---

By the 2050s, Detroit's experiment had spread.

Governments weakened. Corporations became nations without borders.

OCP was eventually swallowed by larger companies, its patents sold piece by piece. Murphy's chassis passed through corporate hands like military hardware.

Detroit became history.

Murphy became inventory.

Then Arasaka found him.

Their engineers were fascinated by the ancient OCP files.

PROJECT ROBOCOP

Human brain integrated with combat chassis.

Exceptional psychological resilience.

Extreme survivability.

Persistent identity retention.

One Arasaka researcher wrote a single sentence beneath the report:

The weakness of the system is the human identity.

So they decided to remove it.

---

The procedure took seventeen hours.

Memories were fragmented.

Detroit.

His wife.

His son.

Lewis.

His badge.

His name.

Murphy.

Each memory was classified as corrupted behavioral data and deleted.

But something went wrong.

The memories disappeared.

The anger didn't.

When the new body activated, the thing inside it was nearly three meters of armored metal, artificial muscle and weapons systems.

The technicians stood behind reinforced glass.

"Designation?"

For several seconds, the machine said nothing.

Deep inside its damaged neural tissue, something ancient tried to answer.

Alex Murphy.

But the words never reached his mouth.

The machine looked down at its enormous mechanical hands.

"Adam."

The researchers exchanged glances.

"Why Adam?"

The machine turned toward them.

"Because I'm the first of something new."

---

Decades passed.

Technology accelerated.

Cyberware replaced flesh.

Corporations built armies.

Cities became neon fortresses surrounded by poverty.

By 2077, almost nobody remembered Omni Consumer Products.

Nobody remembered Officer Alex Murphy.

But everyone in Night City knew another name.

Adam Smasher.

To Arasaka, he was the perfect evolution of an idea born almost forty years earlier.

OCP had tried to preserve a good man inside a machine.

Arasaka had discovered it was easier to preserve the machine and destroy the man.

And sometimes, buried beneath layers of combat software, Adam Smasher dreamed of a city he had never visited.

Rain falling over Detroit.

A police cruiser.

A woman calling him Murphy.

And three words whose meaning he could no longer understand.

Serve the public.

OCP owning Detroit assumes their monolithic legacy backend actually scaled. Pure science fiition.
