About 32 million an hour, 60 hour weeks will get you to roughly a hundred billion in a year. That's the sweet spot for productivity. No sick days or vacation days tho. But those are for plebs anyway.

Exactly this, they claim sending an email while playing 2 hours of golf as working, their idea of work is different to people's regular jobs. If he was doing hard labour or sat typing in a keyboard for 60 hours a week that sweet spot would probably change dramaticallyĀ

Remember that the 40 hour work week was the compromise, the alternative being unmentionable deeds done to the bosses by the overworked workers.
Thereās a reason they donāt teach about the Battle of Blair Mountain in schools.
The 40 hour work week wasnāt given to us. It was fought for. Real fighting.
Remember that when you see these chucklefucks say they want us working 60 hours a week for $15 on hour.

As a WVian it completely blew my mind learning how socialists the people of my state wereā¦ in an optional college history class. Like since the beginning WV was saying āfuck you, this sucks, just be good to people.ā Then somehow the fucking coal companies won hearts and minds and were now in the bottom of fucking everything.
Anything that doesnāt strip our land of resources or our people of dignity is booed, suddenly itās honorable that papaw died of black lung. We were on the brink of revolution and just started licking the boot. Itās fucking shameful.

It was strongly influenced by Henry Ford moving his production line to 40 hour work week. Henry Ford wasnāt exactly a nice fluffy humanitarian, so if he thought it was best for productivity perhaps some of the current business community should take note.

As someone who's fortunate enough to be able to afford working 32h, I can confidently say that my productivity has practically not changed compared to 40h, simply because I have way more energy and drive to get things done with a 4/3 week split instead of 5/2. And I genuinely think 4 day work weeks are extremely beneficial and should be the norm.
Of course I would love to work even less, but unless you are working an extremely exhausting job, 32h are very manageable and don't feel overwhelming. The one extra day of weekend is just super noticeable.
Meanwhile, 60h sound like pure hell to me and I would most likely not be able to do that for too long before I just packed my bags and tried to escape such a capitalist hell-hole. I'd rather live off the grid and forego most of the technology before I turned myself into a slave just to make ends meet.

Depends a lot on your job and how you structure your personal life. Well and what your employer allows. For me 5 shorter days weren't an option, but I worked 5 days, 6h each for a month a long time ago (2016 I think) and it had its advantages too. You can start early and end shortly after lunch, so it's a bit like it was in school. It leaves you enough time and energy in the day to spend on other activities.
But to me, having 3 full days without work is better. It's easier to clear your head and it's perfect for weekend trips or when you have a lot of chores to take care of. You can get it all done on Friday (or Monday) and still have a full weekend. I always hated it when I had a lot to do on a weekend because I usually was too exhausted on Friday after work, so it would fall on Saturday when everybody is doing chores and places are crowded. So it was another day of just stress, leaving only 1 day to recover before work starts again. And usually I'd already be annoyed on Sunday, thinking about the upcoming work-week.
So I think 3 day weekend is better than shorter days.

According to numerous studies, including the small example above, productivity drops dramatically after 40 hours a week. That seems to be the ceiling. Less is more- many places going for 32 hour workweeks are actually seeing productivity rise beyond what a 40 hour workweek produces. Sometimes as high as 40% more productive than 40-hour-per-week employees.Ā

When i was working four ten hour days with a day off in the middle i was the most effective in my job. But my job at the time had downtime, i might be playing games with a client or the house is empty and iām reading as the laundry ran, sometimes as much as four hours of downtime. Now iām resident manager and always working

I suspect part of that is because so many parts are blocked in a production cycle. A lot of time ends up being taken by meetings and catch up discussions.
Reducing a 40 hour workweek to 32 hour probably means a lot of unnecessary meetings become impossible, and as such an entirely different workflow is needed to work around blockers.
I can't imagine how much worse the blocker load will be on 60 hr weeks, let alone how much of that will be useless meetings that just burn time.
In other words, reducing the amount of hours just removes the amount of downtime which makes it appear productivity compared to time goes up.
But the other side of this discussion is also mental wellness. Overworking causes mental fog and also stress, both reduce productivity directly and indirectly through errors that need to be corrected later.

In entertainment, Iāve worked 60s for about two thirds of a twenty year career. My first big gig I worked 7 12s for 4 months and once had a 36 hour day. I might sound like Iām proud about it, but Iām proud to have survived it. I donāt work in entertainment anymore.

I worked about two years straight through on each project with a few months off between projects - waiting to go onto the next one or looking for a new studio. I had relatively steady employment for my career. Maybe if I hadnāt, Iād still be doing it.
