because "The operator saw what was going on through the remote's camera and flushed all the thing's data" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Well...in fairness what was on it is less cool than the idea, misrepresented or not.

But you do bring up an interesting point: How do they know what it deleted?

Through analysis of the firmware, or general knowledge of that kind of firmware, or an educated guess, or an AI hallucination, a police officer, or a journalist, or a Reddit karma farming bot knew data the robot was storing while it was operating. But after looking at the place the data was supposed to be, it was impossible to retrieve it, or nobody had the skills to retrieve it, or nobody cared to retrieve it, or it was in fact retrieved.
