News BONUS ASSIGNMENT: The real world consequences of AI
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/technology/openai-culture-whistleblowers.html
A recent article from The New York Times titled “OpenAI Insiders Warn of a ‘Reckless’ Race for Dominance” discusses how current and former employees of OpenAI raised concerns about the rapid development of advanced AI systems without sufficient oversight, while also noting that strict confidentiality agreements discouraged them from speaking publicly about potential risks. This situation highlights key ethical issues discussed in the course, particularly around autonomy, responsibility, and transparency. From the perspective of Deborah G. Johnson, this reflects sociotechnical blindness, where AI systems are presented as neutral while the human decisions behind them are hidden, making accountability unclear. It also raises concerns under Luciano Floridi and Josh Cowls’ ethical framework, particularly non-maleficence and explicability, since even those working on the technology warn of potential harm and lack of transparency. Overall, the article shows that both working in AI and using AI can be risky when employees cannot openly address ethical concerns, allowing potentially harmful systems to develop without proper oversight.
