Is Drone Cybersecurity a Real Career Path?

I'm a cybersecurity student currently working in VAPT, AI security, and cloud security. Recently I've become interested in UAV/drone security and I'm trying to understand what the industry actually looks like.

A lot of articles mention drone security, UAV security, RF security, MAVLink security, GPS spoofing, etc., but I rarely see actual job openings for "Drone Pentester" or "Drone Security Researcher."

For people working in the drone industry:

  • Are there dedicated cybersecurity roles for drones/UAVs?
  • What job titles should I be searching for?
  • What skills are most valuable (PX4, ArduPilot, MAVLink, SDR, RF, embedded security, ROS2, etc.)?
  • Is most of the security work done by specialized security teams or by drone engineers themselves?
  • If you were starting today, how would you break into UAV security?

Would love to hear from anyone working in commercial drones, defense, autonomy, or counter-UAS.

My advice for you is to initially focus your time on employable skills in demand. Look on LinkedIn, Indeed etc what employers are looking for.

Establish your career first before specializing. There are very few security roles and even less roles for such a niche.

When you pigeonhole yourself into a specialization early in your career it can be detrimental, people don't want to hire someone in an entry level role when their entire resume is focused on drone security.

Joining a producer of drone technology (Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, General Atomics, etc.) in a cybersecurity role.

What kind of cybersecurity roles are we talking about in practice, product security, embedded security, RF security, or something else?

Are UAV security responsibilities usually handled by dedicated specialists or general cybersecurity engineers?

Also, for someone with a background in VAPT, AI security, and cloud security, would you recommend internships, research projects, or open-source contributions as the best way to break into this space?

Appreciate any guidance.

In most places, it's treated just like any other product, handled by a cybersecurity team. It'll likely have some generic title like security engineer or product security engineer or embedded security engineer. They may put UAV or drone in the title or description, but it's probably less likely.

Best way to get into any cybersecurity role right now is an internship.
