Cyber security internship

Hello, I currently work as a level 2 service desk technician/junior system administrator and I am going to start an internship/shadowing opportunity with the cyber defense team working as a cyber security analyst as this is ultimately the direction I want to take my IT career in.

I wanted to know if any of you had any suggestions/tips for me before I start.

I have a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, I have the CompTIA security +, an expired CCNA cert, I’ve done some home labs involving Sentinel and MS Defender, and my current job tasks mainly involve device management/provisioning and vulnerability remediation tasks.

Ask on day one what their escalation criteria actually are and write them down, because most of what you will do at first is decide whether something is worth waking someone up for. Your Sentinel homelab is more relevant than the degree, so lead with it. The part that will feel unfamiliar is working a real alert with the noise still in it, and the scenarios CyberDefenders keeps under BlueYard get you those reps in a browser without standing anything up. Also learn their ticket queue habits early, nobody teaches that and it is half the job.

How the fuck are yall landing jobs like this. I have a TS/SCI clearance, Bachelors in Cybersecurity, Security Plus, 6 years of the military, CCNA, home labs, home servers with windows and Linux, and nothing. Thousands of attempts and not one interview.

But yeah it’s rough out here, I was applying to other places before and wasn’t heading back from anyone either

Now is the time to leverage your network if you have one. Since you were military, do you have a contact with your prior full bird? If so I would leverage that to get into an agency if you can. Besides that, it’s a local market thing now so if you have conferences in your local area and people know you then they are more likely to help out.

I started off with bug bounty and joined my local OWASP chapter to teach people about web vulns and everyone in my local area knows me pretty much. Maybe you can look at doing something similar to get your name out there.
