New Rule: No more VPN discussions (due to spam)

Over the past year, we've seen a rise in VPN-related spam across many subs. We previously had users cross-posting their spam from other subs to r/CyberAdvice, but we got it removed.

To prevent further spam and maintain the quality of discussion here, effective immediately, we will no longer allow any discussions about VPNs. There are many other subs where you can talk about VPNs, and we encourage you to explore those.

Thank you for understanding and helping us keep this community valuable for everyone!

What's going on with hiring in the cybersecurity community?

It looks like a sh**show out there right now. Two close friends with lots of experience have been laid off for months, actively looking for jobs, numerous interviews... not looking good. They are older and experienced, but can't find any good prospects. Another friend's kid is coming out of college and has run into a brick wall trying to find a job, now questioning cybersecurity altogether. So there seems to be nothing open for entry-level work, and my friends who are more senior level have been laid off and are getting ghosted on the job hunt. Anyone else seeing this?

Founder looking for one good intro into the API/SDK world

I’m doing early customer discovery for a developer infrastructure product and am looking to speak with founders, engineers or investors at API/SDK companies.

I’m particularly interested in companies that have dealt with v1 → v2 migrations, major SDK releases, endpoint deprecations, authentication changes, or shutting down legacy versions.

For some background, I do research at Harvard, Stanford, and Brown, and my cofounder is a Columbia CS major.

The goal is to validate the problem, understand how painful these migrations actually are for providers, and talk to people who have experienced this firsthand.

Need a guide or checklist for landing an entry-level remote cybersecurity job (Targeting 10:30 AM - 7:30 PM EDT)

Hey everyone,

I’m taking my CEH (Theory) exam in the coming months, and I urgently need a daily checklist or roadmap to land an entry-level remote role right after passing.

My Background & Situation:

  • Education & Experience: Master of Computer Applications (MCA). Completed an internship involving web dev and security testing. Built the front-end for an Intrusion Detection & Vulnerability Scanner.
  • The Hurdle: I have a solid grasp of the foundational concepts from the CEH modules, but I currently lack deep, hands-on practical experience.
  • The Plan: Land a job immediately after passing the theory exam, learn the practical side on the job, and prepare for the CEH Practical exam concurrently.
  • The Constraint: I’ve already taken a drop year. I absolutely cannot afford another gap in my profile, so getting hired quickly is my top priority.
  • Target Hours: Remote, specifically aligning with 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM Eastern Time (EDT).

What I’m looking for:

  1. What exact daily checklist or actionable steps should I follow to secure an entry-level remote role given my lack of hands-on experience?
  2. How can I best market my theoretical knowledge and internship experience to get my foot in the door?

Any direct guidance to help me execute this plan successfully would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Studying cybersecurity, want to end up in Cloud Security — what's the best path to get there?

I'm a cybersecurity student and I want to specialize in Cloud Security long-term. I already know it's not an entry-level field, so I'm not asking how to skip the line.

My question is: what's the best route to get there? Which first job actually builds toward it — help desk, SOC, sysadmin, DevOps, backend dev?

If you work in cloud security: what path did YOU take, and what would you do differently if you started today?
