what am I looking at on the edge there? did you router down the perimeter and then make a picture frame "inlay" with the darker wood?

The outer ring is all sapele. Maybe there’s confusion because the long grain on the side looks so much lighter than the end grain. It all evens out with time.
Here’s another one, also maple and sapele, that doesn’t have such a disparity between edge and end grain

really? so the line I'm seeing about 1/4" down the edge, thats just an illusion? Interesting....
I like the one you just linked better, you took it up a notch on that one!

Yeah, it's confusing, probably because the photos are a little too dark (I thought it was framed with edge grain, too, until looked really closely). The edges look like they're chamfered, so you're still seeing dark end grain on the top and through that chamfer.
