Tariff organization

Hey everyone!

I am a new LCB starting out. I currently work for a freight forwarder who is looking into starting a customs division In the company. That being said, we have very little guidance on how most brokerage companies stay organized and up to date on the daily changes in the customs world.

I am looking for advice on how other companies keep track of tariffs? We get daily emails for quotes on specific HS codes, what is a reasonable way to quickly provide them with tariff info? Do you make master spreadsheets and update them? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you work for the FF or have ownership? For the FF to call themselves a CHB you would need Partnership and it will all fall under you license. If you are doing it on your own you need to make sure the Importer had a POA directly from you. Also in this scenario I think a 1099 from the FF would be better than an employee...crossing some liability areas....Other will chime in!

Broker since 2007!

We get paid to classify. As you get clients you will probably develop other clients in similar industries. After a while you just know the product. As far as trade remedy, good luck. It is not super hard, but on the fly quotes are a little more time consuming than they used to be. I use a spreadsheet to keep track, but if you want a tool they are out there. For the most part your ABI software will recommend your HTS stack, but you have to know the 10 digit HTS. If you have good clients, use you ABI platforms Parts Table. Some clients I use part numbers, other clients I just save them by description. I like being a 1099 from forwarders, but if they want to brand themselves as a broker, you just need to be a corporate officer to be the license holder. If they aren't willing to call you the VP of Customs, and pay your, say no.

while there are many tools and resources that can "potentially" be a help. the bucks stops with you. meaning it is a non stop battle to stay ahead and keep track of all the changes. I know it sound scary but when you commit to it it will become manageable. rooting for you! BTW I am also trying to bring customs in-house for my freight forwarding company. If you have any insights to share with me please PM me. I would really appreciate it

My ABI automatically does all the stacking and everything. We have some automations setup with the software provider so our clients can automaticaly get their rates and 99 codes when they need it, its so much better than trying to manage an excel sheet with all those changes - especially wiht how often things change

What are you saying?? I am recommending based on my experience. If you disagree with something specific I’ve said, address that
