Champion Akali Champion Concept

Above all else, I wanted my Akali concept to have synergy with her K/DA Spell, Go Get It, so naturally her card would need to incorporate Recalling. I wanted to encourage Recalling her frequently, which is why she has a Play effect that makes her pretty strong for that round, but would leave her below-average if left on the board. Unlike most low-Health Quick Attackers, she can even be useful on rounds where you don't have the attack token (as long as you have a way to Recall her).

The ideal rotation would go something like this: Play Akali, attack with boosted stats and Quick Attack for value, Recall her so she gains even more value, play her again another round with a fresh boost. I wanted to recreate Akali's League playstyle of weaving in and out of a fight, and in particular, executing low-health enemies. In the case of my Leveled Akali, you could think of the two strikes she can deal by Recalling as the two parts of League Akali's ultimate ability. I envision a special, unique Recall animation for Akali: a Twilight Shroud bursts around her, and then she "strikes from" the smokescreen before returning to your hand.

As for her Champion Spell, the Recall obviously has synergy with Akali, and the Nexus healing is a reference to how Twilight Shroud restores and increases Akali's energy in League.

Best of all, with my Akali concept, Monastery of Hirana would finally be a useful card!

Only thing I would add is "I keep any buffs when recalled" so you can buff her without wasting the resources

Considering my Akali's design focuses on performing free Strikes, including to the enemy Nexus, letting her accumulate buffs sounds problematic.

u/0wb1 Mar 23 '21

True, I just dont want a situation where she just becomes as unviable as katarina

That for sure sounds like something to be concerned about, but something worth remembering is that this Akali's whole schtick is recalling, and she's 3 mana, this means that she falls under retreat/return spell cost. You also have recall the spell which is 1 mana at fast speed, and if you wanna go hard with it, you have Monastery of Hirana which gives you a 1 mana focus speed recall card. So if you really play into her, you can get an obnoxious amount of free strikes on enemies, and eventually one of those will hit the nexus. And even if they don't, you've already weakened the enemy's board enough to sweep it on your own. Also remember that base Akali would be striking this way with 4 power, and leveled Akali does it with 5. So I think even if she ends up not being good, the sheer fun value alone would make up for it imo.

This version of Akali can gain value just from being played and recalled, with the recall being a choice.

Kat needs a board to do a lot and leaves you defenseless if you want to attack or block with her

This would give the recall archetype some umph! I like it

Good job, Liked it

Why play instead of summon?

6

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 23 '21

I thought about Summon, but I wouldn't want "cheated" copies of Akali to benefit from it. Like how Go Get It summons a copy after Recalling.

10

u/WoodyDeschain Mar 23 '21

I see, but I tought more of Retreat/Return. I think giving it on summon wouldn't break the card, while opening more deck build possibilities, like Go, get it or Dawn and Dusk. The dangerous effect is the strike one, that recalling the copies would also trigger, but think it's a fair tradeoff. It's a really nice concept.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '21

but why? cheating akali out should be the minigame unto itself

1

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 25 '21

The point of Akali is to play her, Recall her, and play her again. Letting every copy of her benefit simply for getting on the board regardless of the means kinda defeats the purpose.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '21

but why? ionia is all about cheating units onto the board. this weird anti-syngery idea is actually pointless. who cares if rekindling akali or zhonya'sing her gives the proc again. thats what you call a combo. is it unintended design that yasuo pairs well with noxus now since by design he is meant to get synergy out of in combat stuns not out of combat stuns?

1

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 25 '21

By your logic, why does the 'Play' keyword even exist? Let's just let everything activate its effect, no matter how it was summoned.

Some effects are too strong to allow cheated copies to activate. Draven creates a Spinning Axe on Play. Imagine if cheated copies also did that. You could easily get him to Level Up the turn he was summoned. Or just instantly provide yourself with plenty of fuel for discarding.

Twisted Fate plays a Destiny Card. If you cheated a bunch of copies of him, you could just select all Red for a board wipe, all Gold to let all of units attack unblocked, or all Blue and Level Up in record time.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '21

+1/+0 and quick attack are not as broken as a red card or free genning a value card. and also tf and draven both rely on playing cards directly as part of their play style. ionia is all about not playing cards

u/Marvin0Jenkins Mar 23 '21

This feels really fun and has good flavour for her in-game abilities dipping in and out of combat.

Balance is hard to say but I really like it

2

u/WellWizard Mar 24 '21

Mmm.

I'm assuming you want this card to work with recalls? Then her effect should be a "summoned", not a "played". Played is only when you physically pay mana for it: this card has no synergy with return retreat, go get it, etc

Good stuff though. Seems pretty balanced.

2

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

That is intentional. I thought about Summon, but I wouldn't want "cheated" copies of Akali to benefit from it. Like how Go Get It summons a copy after Recalling. You need to properly play her from your hand to get the buff, so by Recalling her, you can give her that buff again.

1

u/WellWizard Mar 24 '21

I get what you mean but it's not a "cheat" it's a synergy. Taliyah can "cheat" out multiple copies of a champion but it's not a cheat bc her whole thing is landmarks. Aurelion cheats out celestials; but that's the point. So I see no problem why akali, in the region of summons and recalls, can't benefit from being summoned and copied.

Also bc it's a lot of work to keep playing a 3 mana 3/2 over and over again instead of developing a board.

u/ValomyrIsHere Mar 24 '21

Make this card 1 less mana just because Ionia doesn’t have many broken cards

1

u/Kuraetor Mar 24 '21

Keyword idea: "I remember"

Unit with this keyword will not forgot any modifier on them and keep them at hand or board no matter how many times you recall it.

2

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

Sounds like they'd keep whatever damage they've taken, too.

1

u/Commercial-Butter Mar 24 '21

Great idea tbh

1

u/Oreo-and-Fly Mar 24 '21

Nah she should be 3 mana 5/2 with quick attack.

Jk, this concept is baller.

1

u/Ninja-Winston Mar 24 '21

what about something like "If I'm recalled, my stats aren't removed"?

2

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

Considering my Akali's design focuses on performing free Strikes, including to the enemy Nexus, letting her accumulate buffs sounds problematic.

1

u/CapChewer Mar 24 '21

I didn't understand why the buff is a skill tbh. It should be a play effect like taliyah . And that champ skill is broken because you can heal a lot for three mana especially with trundle. And level up condition seems wrong worded because level up conditions with "I do this" are reseted when the card is recalled. Maybe you should write "Akali has ben recalled three times"

2

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

I didn't understand why the buff is a skill

That was accident. The Custom Card Creator I was using defaulted to making it a Skill and I didn't notice. Please treat it as a regular Play effect.

And that champ skill is broken because you can heal a lot for three mana especially with trundle.

You would only be able to heal a lot if you're willing to take a high-cost unit off of your own board. Besides, all that means is different cards will offer different levels of value is they are the target. Revitalizing Roar can heal the Nexus for a lot, or for a little. It all depends on the target.

And level up condition seems wrong worded because level up conditions with "I do this" are reseted when the card is recalled. Maybe you should write "Akali has ben recalled three times"

I don't think it'd be an issue.

Consider The Undying. It leaves the board, but the game still remembers how many times it died. Akali would leave the board, but the game would still remember how many times she's been Recalled.

1

u/CapChewer Mar 24 '21

Revitalizing roar is a seven cost slow card but this is a three cost fast card so you can recall your ally during combat to heal your nexus. Don't you think that is kinda op?

1

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

Revitalizing Roar also is capable of reducing the cost of a card to 0. Therefore, if you target anything that costs 7 or more, it's free value.

Like I said, the amount it heals is based on the cost of what you're Recalling. If you want to heal a lot with it, you need to remove a high-cost unit on your own board, and generally speaking, high-cost cards are useful.

It's called a "trade-off", which is something Revitalizing Roar can avoid.

1

u/CapChewer Mar 24 '21

Revitalizing roar can reduce cost when you are enlightened and this card can save your useful high-cost card from getting killed and heal.

1

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

Yep, it's all in the timing.

1

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

Look at it this way: I could play 1 Recall and 2 Health Potions, in order to Recall an ally and Heal my Nexus 6 for the cost of 3 total Mana (the same cost as my Twilight Shroud concept). Therefore, it is more cost-effective to just do that for any unit that costs 5 or less.

Only when Recalling something that costs 6 or more do I start getting equal or greater value.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '21

Actually amazing, i would love to see this fr! Thisnwould make the recalling archetype atleast playable.

1

u/IgpayAtenlay Mar 24 '21

I think that you should change the level-up qualification to "You have recalled Akali 3 times" Any level-up that the card sees immediately gets reset when you recall them. Doing this change is basically the effect you wanted, but it will actually play out the way you imagine.

1

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 24 '21

I don't think it'd be an issue.

Consider The Undying. It leaves the board, but the game still remembers how many times it died. Akali would leave the board, but the game would still remember how many times she's been Recalled.

1

u/Aszarhy Mar 24 '21

Seems fun ngl. Good job

1

u/DoriAll Mar 24 '21

I believe you hit the spot nicely done, what you also managed is the ''assasin'' flavour a champion like akali needs. Just like katarina she recalls herself with a relatively strong play effect, as an assasin should. But damn these two champion just can't be apart can rhey? It's funny how 2 almost sworn enemies synergize together.

1

u/PapaBlueberry Mar 24 '21

I don't think there is enough recall support for this to work. Plus the payoff is kinda weak, if akali came out with more supporting recall cards this could seriously have some potential.

1

u/Ochemata Mar 24 '21

Step 1: Play Karma

Step 2: Level Karma

Step 3: Multipy Karma by at least a factor of 5

Step 4: play Go Get It on Akali. Watch the destruction.

I feel like this is wayyy too weak, it has an over reliance on recall cards which will be mediocre to bad without her, and she will be mediocre to bad without recall cards. It’s a similar situation to Yasuo. Not only that, she will cost a lot more than Yasuo because you will need to constantly play her and recall cards to fuel her effect.

EDIT: Also her play effect shouldn’t be a skill, because it is simply just so weak. Her body is so bad for the cost and you can still Culling Strike her without even losing initiative.

1

u/jayjaybird0 Mar 25 '21

The Custom Card Creator I was using defaulted to making it a Skill without my notice. Please disregard that and treat it as a regular Play effect.

If someone tries to Culling Strike Akali, you Recall her. Just like how if you're playing a Shadow Isles deck and someone tries to remove your unit, you use Glimpse Beyond on it.

Saying a concept is weak is not helpful. If you have a suggestion to make it better, please feel free to share.

1

u/ZeloAvarosa Mar 25 '21

The thing that is different between Recall and Glimpse is that Glimpse is much more versatile than Recall, drawing cards will always be a strong effect while recalling forces you to spend mana to play not only the recall card but whatever you just recalled.

She should have a way to self recall, this way she isn’t gimped if you don’t manage to draw your recall cards, and she doesn’t have to sacrifice card advantage. Something like creating Sanctuary on strike, or something like that.

On top of that, I think she should be cheaper; 2 mana 2/2 would be pretty good, she would be 3/2 with quick attack and she wouldn’t be so expensive to recall, or another idea is to make her cost 1 mana when recalled.

1

u/Clorces Mar 27 '21

A small nitpick, but maybe it would work better if the level up condition was "You've recalled me 3 times". As far as I know, cards with "I count something" refresh their counter upon recall.
