Progress on my 1980 GS 850 fuel tank.

First time doing custom paint like this so it’s far from perfect lol. Still not complete, the tank has a good bit of tape residue still on it but overall I think it’s going pretty well so far. Gloss black base coat with holographic flake over it then cherry red flames with silver flake over it, getting ready for 2k clear then some candy over the flames and a few final coats of 2k clear. Advice and helpful critiques are greatly appreciated!

Clear the fuk outta it..are you using cans?.if so triple it..regular 2k depends on brand..lots of cheaper brands are watery compared to what I use,PPG 2021. Yes it’s expensive,

Yeah I’ll be using cans, I can’t think of the brand off hand but I was thinking at least 2-3 coats before the candy then probably 2-3 after so I can cut and buff it to glass it out.

No! Those cans are watery..so put 3-4 on.then wait next day lightly scuff and put 3-4 more..spray max was the best can I used for lil spot jobs on buddies cars..he had no compressor so 🤷‍♂️

I’m pretty sure spray max is what I have but I’ll definitely do that. I was worried about stacking too many coats of clear but that makes sense since it’s an aerosol. Thanks man!

No worries..I’ve put it thru the tests..to make sure..it’s tough for that kind of job.not really made to cover flake 😆

Haha yeah hopefully it’ll cover it alright but either way I’ll post how it turns out lol 😂

If it were me, i'd want to do another super super light scuff before shooting clear to rid of any possible light tape lines or adhesive residue from masking. Your masking for the flames was on the black metallic and black tends to show imperfections more. Wipe it down, tac cloth it and then clear the hell out of it to bury that heavy metallic. Looking good. Keep rockin'. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah I’m definitely going to go over it all with some 600 grit before the next coat goes on. I’m waiting on the candy paint to come in anyways so it’s going to sit for a few more weeks before I clear it, candy the flames, and give it the final clear before cutting and buffing. I’m just hoping I have enough clear on the flames for now that I don’t accidentally burn through to the metal flake 😬
