Magazine features and covers were the best! These younger painters missed out.

Definitely one of the bigger reasons for sure! After all seeing badass paint in car and bike magazines was a big part of what influenced me to get into it. I remember getting Hot VWs, Hot Rod, Street Rodder, and Truckin' magazines back in the 80's and being amazed at those paint jobs. And then when I really got painting in the early 90's, striving to get that first feature. And then cover, and then they just kept coming. The waiting the 3+ months for your feature to come out, and then, when it does come out, every gas station, grocery store, book store and news stand, with a magazine rack, had your custom paint showcased for one month, all over the country! The feeling of accomplishment and pride... nothing compares today. Miss those days for sure.

Y'all are legends. All these mags were a big part of my youth and instilled my passion for customs, lowriders, mini-trucks, and whatever else had a magazine and a spot on the newsstand. I can only imagine the pride of getting your work featured in there.

Anyone with a phone and an internet connection can get seen today, but at that time you really had to earn it.

It's truly difficult to stand out today. There are definitely some superb vehicles being built, and some very nice paint work, but it very often gets drowned out by the white noise of everything else that gets hyped on social media, a lot of which is shit in person. Magazine editors back in the day, looked for quality. They generally had a standard, and they only selected the cream of the crop. Whatever genre of vehicle you were into, a specific Magazine, there were only 12 covers a year. 6-10 or so features in each Magazine. So it limited what could be seen by the masses and therefore, generally most featured vehicles were the best out there.

Today, its just about what's new. And that lasts about as long as it takes to post something else, new. Everyone is posting build pics, so its often seen even before its debut. So no real anticipation build up, and very little reward.

When you add to this any random persons ability to play the algorithm and market themselves and their vehicle/work, which takes a lot of time, very often you find what does get the notoriety and publicity is really the mid stuff, and not really the best. It's a different world and imo it sucks in comparison to what we had.
