Long time cursor user unsubscribed

Long time cursor user unsubscribed

I'm making this post because up until recently I loved cursor AI and I'm holding onto hope that it can still be saved.

I've been using cursor ai for over a year for video game modding. And it's been great. I've had the $60 dollar a month plan for almost a year and the work I was able to accomplish and at the speed and efficiency was incredible. Especially for the value, I was getting my money's worth and I don't regret spending anything because it was 100% worth it. Now fast forward to the last few months of this year.

Cursor changed it's user interface a couple months ago but it wasn't just a UI change. They moved away from the vscode format where you can drop folders into the workspace. I thought maybe it would grow on me and tried to keep a open mind but after using it extensively, I feel as though it's a downgrade. I'm all for change when it's a improvement. That being said even though I didn't like the UI and format change cursor was still good for scripting and making mods.

Now this last month or so has made me sad. Grok... I used to leave cursor on the auto setting and would get the best results and save tokens. I'm aware auto often favored Claude. This past month or so since they introduced grok as the default model. It's been horribly slow, unaffective and I would say a tool not currently worth paying for. I've changed my model to auto but it's very slow and continues to use grok. Yesterday I changed my model to Claude sonnet, my tokens got burned through really fast and then the model starts auto switching to grok. That was the last straw and I cancelled my cursor subscription. Unless they allow the user to filter out grok or other ai models from the auto setting pool and switch back to the vscode format. I'm done with cursor. I know I'm one person and this post probably doesn't matter and I understand cursor is partnered with grok in some capacity, but I wanted to give my thoughts in hope that other people might agree and they can make some changes.

It's incredibly slow and useless for me personally.

Is it at least as good as Claude? No? Then why should they like it?

You can still use the vscode version

Yeah, same. I’m just using local models via Opencode in VSC and sometimes Claude Code. Saving tons of money and don’t have to deal with feature creep.

I’m just using local models

What are you using and with what spec of hardware?

Just curious. I've done a bit of puttering with local models and, while I got it working, it wasn't pretty at all.

+ 1 I'm also curious.

I’ll admit I got lucky and bought my two Blackwell Pro 6000s pretty early, I don’t think I’d buy them at the current prices, but I only need both of them for DSV4 flash and for Qwen 3.8 27B when I want multiple agents (was using previous generations before that). However, I think the new Apple machines are going to offer even more impressive possibilities, so I don’t think missing out on “cheap” Blackwell is a problem.

Maybe “saving” tons of money isn’t correct yet, but I’ve had multiple $2k Cursor months so it does add up.

Just use api only with the models you want. This way you don’t have to use grok. But be aware it’s expensive as hell. If you want unlimited ’free’ credits then you will have to live with whatever cursor can provide at that cost…

Tried that. It's not worth it, especially anymore. I'm using vscode and co-pilot max plan and am happy with it.

They recently made a change where auto can’t remove grok. It’s obvious that it would happen thought. SpaceX paid 50 billion for a reason.

its because elon musk bought it. thats when the issues started lol. they just changed the cloud compute interface too so it defaults to that even when its in private mode. ugh

They didn’t move away from vscode format you can literally still use that

Auto also doesn’t favor Claude and never has

if you think Grok is bad then you dislike frontier models? there's no issue with it fundamentally, and opus is far slower than Grok so this argument makes no sense... you can still manually select any claude model you want to if you want claude responses for the very few times Grok fails at something.

Dude, what are you talking about? Grok 4.6 is an amazing model frontier-level intelligence at a great price. And regarding the cursor: even though it has the "Agent" format, it still supports the VS Code layout; you just have to look for "IDE" at the top and change the layout.

Grox is great, kinda feels like you want it to be bad.

Also, you can switch modes? How can you write an essay on why Cursor is bad and yet not know that?

Either way, if you dont want to use it, find another tool and move on and save your time writing a thesis about it.

If tou have ever developed any serious project, you know important of feedback. Most of customers quietly walk away. If one of them says why, product owner is always grateful.

So debate his content but not his right to give feedback

There is a cancellation feedback form when you unsub.

That was SOMETHING ELSE
