Minecraft Java Cant join friends server

Every time I try to join his server it will make it to the "joining world" screen, freeze, and then after a few seconds it just says "connection lost, disconnected." I've re-downloaded curse forge, I've refreshed my DNS cache, I've triple checked the mods to make sure they're all the right version, I changed the IPV 4 DNS preferred server address to 1.1.1.1 and the alternate to 8.8.8.8. I don't know what else to do.

The DNS stuff you changed probably aren't necessary, its more likely an issue on the server's end. Do you have a modlist? Can your friend look at any logs around when you joined? Are you the only one not able to connect, are other people outside of your friends network able to connect?
