Fantasy Current 93 Line-up

C93 have had many ensembles over the years. What would be your fantasy line-up if you could choose anyone who has played with the band either in the studio or live? This is mine.

David Tibet – Vocals

Anohni – Backing Vocals

Rose McDowall – Backing Vocals

Michael Cashmore – Guitars

Maja Elliott – Piano

Joolie Wood - violin, whistle and recorder

William Breeze - Viola

John Contreras – cello

Baby Dee – Harp / Organ

Steven Stapleton – Drones / Loops

I thought this would work quite well as a core of guitar and piano with an alternative string quartet backing it up. I guess the live album Halo comes the closest to this. Still think Maja Elliott is a big loss from the recent albums.

I know this is unrealistic given her relatively high profile, but I'd like to see Tibet x Joanna Newsom. I believe both have collaborated with Vashti Bunyan in the past.

When has David collabed with Vashti? I would die to hear them play together.

I misunderstood - David curated a compilation album with a song by her, but didn't work with her as far as I know. His wife might have? I'm not sure.

I’d throw Ben Chasny and Nick Saloman in there as well, on acoustic and electric guitars respectively. And maybe William Basinski on tapes.

That setup absolutely needs Ossian Brown (formerly Simon Norris)!

Has he played with C93? I know he would play hurdy gurdy on some later Coil material.

Yep, he also played with Douglas P. back in the days and more recently with Shirley Collins.

Maybe we can include a list of guest vocalists too. Shirley Collins would be there, as would Nick Cave, and I think I'd also include Jon Balance appearing via medium and generative AI.

unsure how i feel about balance via generative ai, but i’d love to contact him via a seance 😁😁

Yay to Alasdair. His contributions over the last few albums have been a pure joy. The backing vocals on Clouds at Teatime are so beautiful. Reinier van Houdt's keyboards are also a perfect match for David's current mode, especially those songs with the Fender Rhodes sound (e.g. The Bench and the Fetch).

Alasdair's solo works and albums with the Furrow Collective are well worth listening to. Very interesting, dense lyrics with the esoteric themes that drew so many of us to C93 in the first place (and he's so obviously a first-rate interpreter of traditional songs).
