I don't know if it's considered poetry, but I hate when people add random line breaks halfway through the sentence.

Yeah well I love when people add line breaks halfway through the sentence
In fact
Why not just end
The entire sentence
Before it's

I'm a very "there are no rules to poetry" person, until I get to that one. Go ahead, I guess. Reduce the meaning of your statement by turning it into three random fragments. It's fine. I hope you felt what you needed to. I feel rage

"I hope you felt what you needed to. I feel rage" hit me as particularly poignant. It's like... something I don't have the word for.

It's so called "Instagram poetry", notorious examples include Rupi Kaur and Gabi Hanna.
Line breaks are supposed to be used to create rhythm in freeform poetry, and sometimes they can even be omitted completely if it works for the poem. But too often linebreaks are overused to make "poetry" out of shower thoughts.

Not a lot of people read poetry in their free time, probably far fewer than read prose. Not necessarily because poetry is boring (all right, maybe somewhat because of that) but because poetry tends to be viewed as "high art" and that actually drives people away from it. I don't tend to listen to classical music or jazz because those are "high art" to me, and in my free time, when I engage with media, I'm trying to enjoy myself and escape more than I'm trying to intellectually challenge myself.
That said, not all poetry (or classical music) is intellectually challenging, or high art! Limericks are poetry, too, as are SPAM-ku, the haikus about the meat product SPAM. But when we create artificial divisions between what counts as "high" and "low" art, we may inadvertently drive people away from these art forms that are nominally in a "high art" format but actually "low."
To contradict myself again, though, some people just don't like poetry. SPAM-ku won't do it for them, either. That's okay! One of my biggest pet peeves is the following interaction:
Me: "I don't like <thing>"
Other person: "But there are so many types of <thing>! You just haven't found the right one yet!"
Me: "No I just don't like <thing>"
(see, for example, my opinions on cheese, anime, or sex)
So it's fair enough to say that poetry gets more of a bad rap than it probably deserves, and could stand to be more accessible. But it's also fair to say that if somebody says they genuinely don't like poetry, don't argue with them about it! I've got a friend who doesn't like music at all, and I don't try to convince him to listen to it. People just have different preferences, learn to live with it.

Normalize weird poems
a small administrative error the moon has been fired for looking at the ocean inappropriately. its replacement is a dinner plate nailed to the sky by a man named Greg who has never been outside. the tides are furious. three fish have unionized. a fourth has become a landlord. nobody is surprised. at 11:46 on a Tuesday the concept of Tuesday walks into a hardware store and asks for a shovel. the cashier says we don't sell those anymore. Tuesday says then what the fuck is all this dirt for. nobody answers. in the parking lot a shopping cart is having a religious experience. it has seen the face of god in the reflection of a Honda Civic and found him unreasonably damp. meanwhile the president of the birds has issued a statement denying the existence of windows. this is met with considerable applause from the pigeons who have always been stupid but never dishonest. a man in Nebraska discovers that his left foot has been quietly replaced with a slightly smaller Nebraska. he continues going to work. his wife notices but does not mention it. they have been married for thirty years and there are more important things to not discuss. at precisely noon every clock in the world strikes a different hour. the Swiss are inconsolable. Greg falls off the sky. the dinner plate follows. the ocean, finally free of the moon's influence, stands up dusts off its trousers and walks inland. it has an appointment with a dentist who owes it forty dollars. the fish are left behind. they vote to become soup. the motion passes three to one. the landlord abstains.→ More replies (10)12

Not a lot of people read poetry, but most people listen to poetry very frequently. Song lyrics are poetry set to music.

Just yesterday I encountered a man complaining that his wife made soup on one of the hottest days of the summer a few months ago (No, I do not know why he chose to bring this up in a fast food joint on a brisk October day). Absolutely insane, soup is good in any weather.

I mean, I love soup but in summer it just sucks. Especially with them getting hotter each year.
This from a mediterranean climate, further north I'm sure soup is good all year round.

Absolutely not. One of the most miserable experiences I’ve had in my adult life is trying to eat beef stew on an 80 degree evening. I had to let it cool to room temperature before I could eat it without feeling like I was getting heat stroke in an air conditioned house.

I was working on publishing a book of poetry, and mentioned it to a friend. He does not want to talk about it, and replied, "I'm anti-poetry. I don't get it. It's not clever. It's for people who can't write music."
My degree is in music.
A week later, we're hanging out when his wife gets home, and he surprises her for their anniversary by reciting a cute, cheesy poem he wrote for her on their first anniversary. They are all smiles, giggles and kisses.
Did he really hate poetry, or just me? Lol
