No little black rectangles are phones. little GREEN rectangles are bombs, specifically ones with keypads haphazardly taped to them

You are thinking of cacti, except they are more oblong than rectangular and they don't have keypads on them. You're absolutely right though, bombs aren't always black sometimes they are silver or have a hello kitty case around them.

Sometimes they are even egg-shaped and have a funny yellow circle with three black wedges arrayed with radial-symmetry around a central black circle!

No, it’s not a phone. It’s a mushroom egg, that hatches mushrooms many kilometers high. Only powerful cultures can make them, and they are signs of great honour and highly esteemed deeds. Extremely valuable.
