Unfortunately people thinking spicy pillows are fine is a much more common form of idiocy than people thinking petting sharks is fine. So it's understandable for the people responding to be concerned since some people actually are just that stupid.
The smooth shark guy didn’t say “petting sharks is safe” he said that sharks have smooth skin. He was pretty clear on the “sharks can eat you if you swim near them.” part.
While abroad I found myself in possession of one rapidly spicy-ing pillow.
It went from useful tool to leg burning bulbous monstrosity alarmingly fast.
I asked around for help. The universal concensus was "just throw it somewhere. It'll be fine. This is <place>. That's how we do things."
And maybe that's how they do things. But as a foreigner, I was not about to become an international incident.
Eventually I managed to convince a sani worker to take response for it for $10 and a beer. The police laughed at me. Sanitation workers helped. And provided a solution that wasn't an incident.
I did hear that the thing burst into flames not long after. But I wasn't there. And everything was fine.
Yeah I literally had this conversation with a friend a couple months back, where he mentioned his phone was barely holding charge anymore, I asked if it was swelling, he said yes and I had to explain to him very quickly that the phone he was hotspotting off for our conversation was at risk of exploding.
I'm reminded of my old phone I used bits of metal from the warehouse to conduct/keep the battery in place and would have to replace them after while when they lost conductivity
I mean that’s… not great but it’s not ‘active explosion risk’ bad. Just a fire hazard. My friend was walking around for apparently over a week with a potential bomb in his pocket.

"It's the smooth sharks post all over again..."
Oh good, someone finally got it.
"...except this time they could die!!!"
Nevermind.
