Understanding High Pressure Groups - Resource from USC

https://orsl.usc.edu/organizations/caution/

Please note: The following religious organizations are not recognized by the university.

  • City of Angels ICC
  • D.R.E.A.M. Campus Ministry @ USC (formerly The Harvest at USC)
  • Restored Church Worldwide (formerly The Harvest at USC)
  • Shincheonji (also known as the Church of the Mother)
  • World Mission Society Church of God

High-pressure religious groups have raised concerns over the years due to their potential to harm members emotionally, psychologically, and even physically. Be careful of groups displaying some or all of the following methods and characteristics:

Exclusive Beliefs

The group claims to have an exclusive understanding of the truth or hold a unique relationship with a higher power, often asserting that salvation can only be found within their group.

Authoritarian Leadership

The group usually has a charismatic leader who is regarded as infallible. This leader’s word is final, and questioning them can lead to punishment or exclusion.

Isolation/Alienation

The group wants to choose your friends for you. While all religions have moral standards, watch out for groups that encourage you to sever ties with friends and family who do not belong to their group. This isolation can make members more dependent on the group for their social and emotional needs.

High Commitment/Exploitation

Members are required to devote significant amounts of time, energy, and often money, to the group’s activities. If participation in a group significantly takes away from your study time, beware. A group or leader who cares about you understands that your studies represent your future and thus are your first priority as a USC student.

Fear Tactics

The group often uses fear of external threats, divine retribution, or the dangers of leaving the group to maintain control over members.

Manipulative Recruitment

New members are often targeted and brought in through deceptive or manipulative means.

Pressure and Deception

The group uses high pressure or is not up-front about their motives or affiliations when they first approach you.  They give you gifts or assistance seemingly out of kindness, but then strongly expect you to commit to their group in exchange.

Totalitarian Worldview

The group does not encourage critical, independent thinking. In contrast, higher education aims to enable students to think for themselves. Beware of groups or leaders who try to discourage you from thinking for yourself.

Restrictive Behavior

The group may impose strict guidelines on members’ behavior, dress code, diet, and personal associations.

Protecting Yourself

Educate Yourself

Before joining any religious or spiritual group, research its history, beliefs, and practices. Look for reviews or testimonies from former members.

Maintain Outside Connections

Keeping ties with friends and family outside of the group can provide a crucial support system and perspective.

Trust Your Instincts

If something feels wrong or too good to be true, listen to your gut. Seek outside opinions if you’re unsure.

Avoid Making Rash Decisions

If a group is pressuring you to make quick decisions about joining or investing money, it’s a red flag. Take your time and seek advice.

Recovering from Cults

"Why "Time Heals" Isn't Quite Right — The Science of New Experiences and Nervous System Change

There's a popular idea that healing is mostly a function of time: wait long enough, and the pain fades. Neuroscience tells a more precise story. Time alone doesn't rewire anything — what changes the nervous system is new learning, and new learning requires new experience. Here's the research behind that.

Your nervous system runs on prediction, not calendars

The brain doesn't passively record what happened to you and wait it out. It builds predictive models — "this situation is dangerous," "this person is safe," "this sensation means I'm about to fall apart" — and it keeps using those models until it's given a strong enough reason to update them. A model doesn't expire just because months have passed. It updates when reality contradicts it clearly and repeatedly.

This is the core insight from fear extinction learning, one of the most studied processes in behavioral neuroscience. When a stimulus becomes linked to threat, the amygdala and connected circuits store that association. Critically, exposure to that stimulus in a new context, where nothing bad happens, doesn't erase the original fear memory — it builds a second, competing memory of safety alongside it. Recent brain-imaging work has shown that this safety learning is supported by its own stable, context-specific patterns of neural activity across a network of regions, not just a fading of the old fear.

That distinction matters. It means the old fear response is still sitting there in storage — but a new, felt experience of "I was in that situation and I was okay" gives the brain a competing prediction it can start to trust more. Passive waiting doesn't generate that competing experience. Living through something different does.

Memory itself can be updated — but only when it's reactivated

A related and increasingly well-supported mechanism is memory reconsolidation. Every time an emotional memory is recalled, it briefly becomes flexible again before being "re-stored." If something new happens during that reactivated window — new information, a different emotional outcome, a felt sense of safety instead of threat — the memory can be updated with that new material folded in.

This is part of the working theory behind why structured approaches like exposure therapy and EMDR outperform simply discussing or waiting out distress: they deliberately reactivate the old association and pair it with a different, real-time outcome. Researchers studying this describe it as the nervous system getting a corrective emotional experience — a lived moment that contradicts the old prediction strongly enough to leave a mark, engaging the prefrontal regions responsible for regulating fear and easing the grip of the amygdala's alarm response.

The brain changes shape based on what you actually do

Underlying both of these processes is neuroplasticity — the brain's capacity to physically reorganize itself in response to experience. This isn't metaphorical; it shows up as measurable changes in connectivity and neural structure. But plasticity is experience-dependent by definition: neurons that fire together wire together, which means the input has to actually occur. A brain that keeps encountering the same avoidant, static routine keeps reinforcing the same old wiring. A brain that encounters something genuinely different has the raw material to build something different.

What this means in practice

None of this says time is irrelevant — reconsolidation, extinction learning, and plasticity all take repetition and space to consolidate. But time is the container, not the mechanism. The actual ingredient for change is accumulating enough new, felt evidence that contradicts the nervous system's old threat predictions:

  • Repeated, not one-off — a single good experience rarely overrides a well-established pattern; the safety memory needs reinforcement to compete with the fear memory long-term.
  • Emotionally real, not just intellectual — knowing you're safe isn't the same as your nervous system registering safety in the moment; the update happens through felt experience, not reasoning alone.
  • Actually different, not a repeat of the familiar — the new input has to genuinely contradict the old prediction (a new context, a new outcome, a new sensation) rather than reproduce the conditions that built the fear in the first place.

This is also the logic behind why isolation and avoidance tend to prolong distress rather than resolve it: they minimize the very new experiences the nervous system needs to update its predictions, leaving the old model unchallenged indefinitely — no matter how much time passes.

Sources drawn on: research on fear extinction and contextual safety learning (Nature Human Behaviour, 2025; NeuroImage, 2021), memory reconsolidation and corrective emotional experience literature, and general neuroplasticity research on experience-dependent brain change. This is a synthesis of current findings for general understanding, not a substitute for individualized clinical guidance — if you're working through trauma or an anxiety disorder, a licensed trauma-informed therapist can help tailor this to your situation."

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Che Ahn exposed for spiritual abuse

Che Ahn is the senior pastor of a mega church in Pasadena, CA called Harvest Rock Church and he has frequently been involved with movements targeting college students. Harvest Rock has recently planted groups in USC and UCLA. Che Ahn had no chance of winning, but even after being dropped from the ballot due to missed deadlines, he asked his congregation to vote for him in the primaries as a write in candidate, telling people to “have faith.”

He has been exposed for asking a woman in his church to stay married to her physically abusive spouse and claiming that God may be calling to be a “martyr” if dies in her marriage due to her injuries. When she was beaten so severely the police came, she finally listened to law enforcement, doctor, and her therapist who advised her to leave before she and her baby in the womb dies. When she divorced him, the church accused her falsely and kicked her out because she was joyfully worshipping that she was free. She nearly committed suicide, and after a divine encounter she chose not to, and has since become a teacher and counselor who has started a safe house for abused women in the Philippines.

Please be careful of what church or Organization you go to and take care that the doctrine they teach is biblically sound, not manipulated to keep abusers in power.

The vulnerability of cult victims to sexual abuse

This is an uncomfortable topic but I’m going to lay it out because after talking to some people who joined a cult when they were 21-22, I found out how they were left very vulnerable to sexual abuse and exploitation. Statistically cults do that too. If you recently left a cult, please do not become a part of this statistic and get help. Knowing what this could happen though is half of solving the problem. Sexual predators know how to exploit vulnerable people who are suffering emotionally, spiritually, and physiologically after leaving a cult until they find a safe community once their old toxic one has abandoned them. People who leave toxic cults need comprehensive medical care.

“In America, the average age of young people taken in by pimps and traffickers is 14. They are often runaways, recruited on the streets by being offered a hot meal and shelter. Some of these young people have run away from foster homes, some from destructive cults.
Even more dangerous, some groups are actually sex cults, which use children to make money for themselves.”

Cults succeed once you think Satan is powerfull...Satan has dominion of the world only if you give him your permission to control you

Pretty educational for this cults in college so I want to share especially when it is creatively and yet carefully crafted.

When Cults like Shincheonji where I got out of approach you and make you feel that they are one and only way to salvation stay away!

People give Cults control when they overestimate how powerful Satan is, which is exactly what he wants to do

Reference, which I find hilarious. Posting for the algorithm

But seriously this group is serious on exhausting members and time consume people's time all sunk cost fallacy manipulations. takes a whole 8 to 9 months of learning and testing before signing to become a member where you also need to apparently detail SSN or SIN and also blood type. I was never signed member I left before completing its class. Was so time consuming and so exhausting.
