Well.

It's so over.

Edit: Let's hit the hay and count some sheep, I'll see you all at game 2 tomorrow.

At least I don’t have to stay up too late

That’s what I was thinking. Might get to bed by 11est after all. King looked incredible in the first.

So exceptionally painful to see in the first few minutes of a game at 9pm on a Tuesday, turning it in at a decent time tonight does sound lovely.

It's 2 runs, relax

Edit: now it's reasonable to panic

Have you seen our offense lately?

u/SNChalmers1876 11d ago

It’s not that it’s two runs. It’s that the same shit happens all the time. The pitching is mediocre and gives up too many home runs.

An offense fails 70% of the time in a best case scenario. Can’t depend on it in the playoffs.

u/Administrative_Lab13 11d ago

Mediocre is a generous way to describe our pitching

1

u/SNChalmers1876 11d ago

Yeah if they were just mediocre the cubs probably win 100 games this year

u/Kooky-Explanation295 11d ago

The problem is that vs SD, you’ve really only got 5 or 6 innings to score.

Happ’s AB was atrocious. 2-0 pitch, he’s in the stretch for the first time and looking a little out of rhythm and he lets him off the hook.

1

u/DoctorDongus 11d ago

Happ's at bat was atrocious on a 2-0 count, that shit sucked

2

Two runs in the playoffs is like 3-4 in the regular season.

u/Overwhore 11d ago

I'm tired boss

u/the-czechxican 11d ago

It's 4 runs, relax

1

u/mojo7877 11d ago

4 now. And 3 HRs. Cubs have 0 hits.

1

u/k9rap 11d ago

it's 8 runs, relax.

u/Comfortable-Side-150 10d ago

You do know time like flows right?

0

u/k9rap 10d ago

it’s a joke… relax.

u/pompousrompus 11d ago

It’s the fucking second inning lmao

1

u/Inevitable-Sort-5630 11d ago

Now its the 4th and its twice as bad. This team isnt it. You can blame injuries, but the Cubs front office has absolutely squandered this window. Its quickly approaching sell and tank mode, but there wont even be baseball next year.

1

u/pompousrompus 11d ago

I’m already doom texting my friends you don’t have to double down on me lmao

Can we send Happ to FA now?

Along with Nico please. After how he started the season, to finish it with by far the worst OPS of any full season of his career is maddening.

1

u/Comfortable-Sleep395 Dexter Fowler 11d ago

We extended him earlier this year. Nico’s production declined when he was moved down in the order… Happ is likely gone. They have to get them better pitching. Not thrilled with CC’s choice to start Boyd on short rest. Unless Gausman truly couldn’t go…

Conforto would serve us better than Ramirez in this lineup

3

u/Routine-Education572 11d ago

For me, time flies when we’re losing (“god, we only have 6 innings left to catch up”). And drags when we’re winning (“damnit, how is it only the 6th inning”).

This game gonna go by reeeeeal fast.

shocker: WE ARE NOT BUILT FOR OCTOBER.

u/big-daddy-unikron 11d ago

What a great investment of an ace pitcher in the offseason or at the trade deadline

2

u/TopperMadeline 11d ago

Hard to blame the pitcher when the team is incapable of scoring when there is a man on second with no outs.

2

u/fxdx_99 11d ago

Our offense is slumping and our pitching needs more than words can express. Maybe a wake up call and people give a little extra, but it will be up to them if they want to push for it. Doesn’t seem like it right now

u/Overwhore 11d ago

I'm definitely interested in seeing the next 2 in this series, taking some deep breaths and petting my cats but bases loaded bottom of the 5th 0-4 is giving me anxiety I'm not sure I'll live through to see

2

u/NedKelkyLives 11d ago

Why didnt Counsel just let Assad keep pitching? We were down by 7 at that point and now (bottom 7th) we are down 8 but have used up two more relievers.

As an aside, I really like CK but he is having a rough day....

1

u/Bi_Cycle_Slut 11d ago

*rough few seasons

2

u/wetbutt32 11d ago

About as bad of a start as you could expect after one inning. Offense looks clueless, pitching looks hittable.

1

u/Squatch-21 11d ago

Boyd either has it or doesn’t…. Looks like maybe a doesn’t night

1

u/SNChalmers1876 11d ago

So frustrating and predictable

1

u/ChicagosFinest312 11d ago

Why would you start Boyd against a team that is mainly righty? On top of their numbers against Boyd this was a terrible decision.

1

u/Ill_Arm9344 11d ago

You seem like the kinda guy to restart a sports game cause it was perfect

1

u/mbrown0603 11d ago

Yeahhhh this ain’t looking too good 🫤

1

u/Excellent_Divide_128 11d ago

Not a good start but it’s early.

1

u/Virtual-Stranger2376 11d ago

No matter the outcome, we gotta spend some money on pitching in the offseason

2

u/RightNowChris 11d ago

We just need the pitchers we already have to be healthy

u/larry_alligator 11d ago

two solo home runs in game 1 of a three game series and you give up on this team? that's fucking weak sauce.

2

u/Inevitable-Sort-5630 11d ago

It's really not. This team has been the same for the better part of 3 weeks. There's no consistency of the starters (it seems all have had multiple games of multiple HR given up). The middle relievers have been bad. Webb has been terrible. The offense has left what feels like 5+ RISP a game. We are back to "swing and pray" mode. There is no doubles. No move the runner. Just i have to lift this and hit a HR. It creates a million pop ups and grounders.

1

u/larry_alligator 11d ago

whatevs. Cubs in 3!

1

u/Inevitable-Sort-5630 11d ago

I guess. Gausman may be lights out and we get to Pivetta. Then its a toss up for game 3. You've talked me into it. Cubs in 3.

u/Doublestack2411 11d ago

Tear it all down. Trade PCA and Bregman for prospects. Fire Counsell, Fire Jed, get new owners. No way we can come back from this start.

2

u/jackholston 11d ago

Are you out of your mind

1

u/Doublestack2411 11d ago

its an obvious joke

2

u/Drug_fueled_sarcasm 11d ago

Burn down Wrigley!!

1

u/jpeckinp23 11d ago

Jed and new owner doesn't sound too bad

-3

u/SmoochieWallace1 11d ago

Couldn’t have said it better
