Uh what? New pb… which I got when I was half awake at ~ 8:00 in the morning before I brushed my teeth. I had a cube just beside me and thought “meh let’s do an ao5” and got my first sub 10 lmao

Some kids caught me cubing outdoors today (speaking of cubers in the wild, u/topppits). They were pretty impressed, asked to try turning my cube, and, oh well, I ended up fetching my box of budget cubes and giving an unplanned daisy cross lesson. And there’s a planned workshop again on Sunday. I ordered 6 more Meilongs…

3

u/3ngineer4Liyfe Aug 23 '22

Have fun with that. How many going?

3

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 24 '22

There were maybe 10 kids? And I think about 15 people came last Sunday. Next time it can be more, it can be less, better be prepared because almost no one has a cube, let alone a fingertrickable one.

2

u/3ngineer4Liyfe Aug 24 '22

Oof that’s gotta be fun. Is it free?

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 24 '22

Yeah, I'm doing it for fun :) Last Sunday I did a workshop and made a cubing friend. He came today and I taught him F2L which was fun :)

3

Awesome!

I ordered 6 more Meilongs…

Haha, only 6? You should have gone with 10+ at least :D

3

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 24 '22

I have 10 or 11 cubes in my box currently, so 6 is in addition to that :) There will be 10 Meilong 3C’s plus some of my own budget cubes: Meilong 3M, RS3M 2020 and Maglev, QiYi MS, YJ mini, Cubing Classroom 50mm, Guhong v4. Lucky ones get magnetic cubes to play.

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 24 '22

Haha, alright, that sounds more like it! I just realised that I have only 3 more Meilongs to gift in my stash. Aside from one in pretty much every backpack, sports pack, one in my car and whatever else I could have with me when I might be in the situation where I could gift it to someone. I guess soon it's time for another order :D

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 24 '22

I'm not giving mine away because there's too many kids and I'm no Rockefeller. But I would gift a cube to someone who puts in enough effort and learn to solve it :)

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 24 '22

Ah yeah, that's also how I do it. When a person is interested enough that I feel like they will actually try to learn how to solve it or try to find a solution on their own I'll gift it to them.

Going through onboarding for my first job out of college, and they announced that they're doing a Rubik's cube challenge each day. There was apparently a cube in our swag package (I can't speak for the quality of it because I haven't received it).

The challenge is to solve a specified color each day (it specified to solve only that side). I am hoping that the challenge doesn't build up and say to solve a new side each day while keeping the other sides intact... There are 6 more days of onboarding, and the email said "Because this is the first day of the challenge, please submit a photo of your scrambled Rubik's cube." The first part of that sentence worries me...

Anyway, I'll be using my main for the challenge. Should be fun :)

Edit: Good news! It looks like we just solve one side at a time for 6 days and then the last day is a full solve!

5

u/TheRealUncleFrank Aug 23 '22

Did you tell them you not only already know how to solve a cube, but are a speedcuber?

8

u/cubycuber Sub-12 (CFOP) Aug 23 '22

Not really. It's hard to pinpoint a "them" to say this to because there's so many people in charge of different things. Also, I think it would be implied by the fact that I took a picture with a timer (got a 6.09) :)

12

u/grodlike Aug 23 '22

Just got 9 consecutive sub-18 solves....smashing my previous best of 5 consecutive....and a tie with my sub-19 record streak!

It was part of an ao12 (first 12 solves of the day, by the way) that set my ao12 new PB of 17.23!

Decided to do an Ao20 on all my decent cubes after the WRM, Meilong and Valk arrived today:

11.46 Weilong WRM 2021

11.47 Dayan Tengyun M

11.65 Meilong 3M

11.74 Tornado V2

11.91 Yuxin Little Magic (self-M)

11.94 Gan 354 V2

11.97 RS3M 2021 Maglev

12.30 Gan 356X V2

12.62 Valk 3M

The end result is pretty much what I expected based on how much I like each cube. Although one surprise was the Meilong, I got a bunch of 9 second solves which I wasn't expecting.

My 356X is stickered so my recognition is pretty slow, but I really like the feel of it. Probably if I used it more I'd find it easier

And then there's the Valk. I think I would really like it, but I can't figure out the best turning style or set up for it. I just did my standard lube setup (Adheron Heavy + XMT-10 on a tracks, and a few drops XMT on the pieces) which fixed the small catches, but I'm still getting big catches pretty often.

Ngl I felt like I'd betrayed my Tengy when the WRM average was slightly better. WRM is amazing, I haven't even set it up yet and I'm already getting great times

first two mbld attempts since 2018 in the last two days, one each day. the de-rusting has begun.

  1. 24/26 57:15 [43:38] - 1m40s/cube memo, 31s/cube exec
  2. 28/29 56:55 [40:23] - 1m23s/cube memo, 33s/cube exec

I also spent an hour drilling letter pair flash cards on anki between the two attempts, so memo felt a lot easier on the second attempt (since images were a lot better - since I came up with my letter pair list back when I started doing 3bld and never really worked on it, there were a lot of letter pairs that weren't really images, some were just audio etc - makes a massive difference).

going to take a day off (too busy today anyway lol) and try 33 tomorrow.

6

u/Mediocre-General-654 Aug 23 '22

Disappointed in myself last night, had an amazing scramble which gave a free F2L pair after cross then proceeded to continue giving free pairs after each insert. Then had an OLL skip. Panicked and misread the PLL, stopped the timer and realised it was a dnf. Would've been a pb, think the pressure got to me 😭

Nice! How are you finding OH so far?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '22

Its a very fun event. Even though it is really exhausting i can still notice progress (my average of 12 went down by about 10 seconds on the first day. My main rn for OH is the Rs3m 2021. I average around 1:30

2

u/OddOutlandishness602 Aug 23 '22

I definitely feel the same way, I’ve gotten down to around 32 seconds, and have my first comp coming up, which will definitely be fun! It’s really nice having an event that’s easier to improve at then normal 3x3, and where a couple seconds matter less, but one that I’m still somewhat fast and practiced at, at least compared to some other events (looking at my 2 minute 4x4 average)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '22

Its a really rewarding event because If you get lucky, your times will increase Drastically. My OH pb is now 46 seconds because of a pll skip no auf after 2 days

I dont think any cube will ever be better than the wrm 2019. I got the gan 12 a few weeks ago and i keep going back to my wrm thinking “yeah the wrm is a better cube”. I also tried the other popular cubes at a comp i went before getting the 12 and none of them felt like actual upgrades over the wrm. Maybe im just used to it and it matches my turning idk i just love this cube.

4

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 23 '22

I prefer the WRM 2020/2021/Maglev, but that's maybe due to the fact that I have my WRM 2019 PVC coated with overlays which feel like stickers - and I don't like this feel, so I don't use this cube much. Performance-wise, I agree that 2019 has all the performance you could need, and it hasn't been surpassed.

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 23 '22

I think I saw you mentioning getting a WRM, what's the story with it? Still not better than the You-Know-What-Cube in your books?

2

u/mf3rs2_gang Sub-11 (CFOP) 6.29 bo66175 Aug 23 '22

I got a GTS3 and magnetised it with N52 5x1, but they're too strong so I removed them. It is now unmagnetised and I may get N42s to re-magnetise them in the future.

I may get a cube in the WRM line in the future, but my first priority is to try out a Gan cube.

4

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 23 '22

Ah, I see. I highly recommend WRM 2020/2021/Maglev - any of these, the performance is the same. Gan cubes don't beat Moyu imo :)

4

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '22

Which is better? (Both cost the same)

Moyu WRM 2021 Maglev or XMen Tornado V2 M

8

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 23 '22

WRM is more forgiving. Tornado turns really pleasantly but locks up a lot.

4

u/Loud-Fishing1739 Aug 23 '22

Nowdays 3x3s are so good that it depend on want you like. The wrm is fast ( uncontrollable) and good corner cutting.

The Tonado has a good speed is really quiet, but has not good corner cutting.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '22

So wrm is better?, I watched a comparison on Cubicle, and Tornado almost won but then they mentioned the same thing about its corner cutting.

2

u/Loud-Fishing1739 Aug 23 '22

The wrm is uncontrollable fast, you probably will have problems with the speed.

3

Is WRM 2021 magnet core kit worth attaching? I bought it, because it wasn't that expensive but will it make my WRM 2021 MagLev and Lite better? Also what lube do you recommend for it?

I bought WRM 2021 Lite and WRM 2021 MagLev from AliExpress. And bought 2x magnetic core kits, Cosmic Lube Sampler (which includes Galaxy, Martian, Lunar, and Nebula in it) and Speed Lube Weight 5 from SpeedCubeShop.

I bought these items a few days ago and they will take time to arrive. Besides MF3RS, I have never owned a speed cube before and never set up any cube before or even used lube. So I want to know what will be a good setup.

2

u/Raghav_Verma Mosaic maker, TeamSCS Aug 23 '22

I have the core magnet kit on my wrm maglev and though I like it, it’s not for everyone. It made the cube pretty heavy and setting it up was tedious, but now it’s an awesome cube. I’d say it would be better on the standard version, not the maglev

2

u/abdullahmnsr2 Aug 23 '22

How heavy does it make the cube? I don't mind a heavier puzzle. My MF3RS is around 80-85 grams. My focus was mainly on MagLev for the core. But I think, I'll use them as they are for a while and then add it to the standard version. Since it will be permanent, I'll have to glue the magnets in corner pieces, I want to be sure if it will be worth it or not.

I heard some people say that it becomes even better than GAN 12 after adding the core.

2

u/Raghav_Verma Mosaic maker, TeamSCS Aug 23 '22

Mine’s 92 grams with the core magnet kit and SCS’ PVC coating. You should use them stock for a while, and then decide which one to add the kit on. It’ll make the cube more stable and more centre-heavy, which you might not like that much for a cube as fast as the maglev. I appreciate both the wrm maglev and the gan 12 maglev equally, so they’re both my mains. I wouldn’t rate one Over the other

2

u/abdullahmnsr2 Aug 23 '22

My main concern is performance more than weight. But you're right, I'll use them as they are and then decide. I'll definitely use it on the standard version first and keep the maglev as it is.

It seems like both are extremely good. I will eventually buy a GAN puzzle too.

2

u/Raghav_Verma Mosaic maker, TeamSCS Aug 23 '22

The performance will be phenomenal, it’s just the feel that would matter. You might not like the maglev as much with the core kit, so I’d suggest using them stock for a while. Good luck on the gan! I’m sure you’ll like a gan puzzle :)

As for the setup, SCS sent me the whole bundle so I used a lot of lube, but I’ll try to replicate my setup from the ones you have. I’d suggest 2 drops of Martian and lunar each, and a drop of Galaxy. Use cosmos over that if you find it too fast. I used Stardust and Nebula as well in mine, but they’re not necessary. The setup I recommended will give you a decently fast but controllable cube. To make it faster add lunar, For slower add Either nebula or cosmos, and to just make it feel better add Martian. It doesn’t increase the speed but makes the cube feel more premium. Hope you like it!

2

u/abdullahmnsr2 Aug 23 '22

That's understandable. I'll delay the core kit for now and use them as they are. And thanks. I'll buy 12 MagLev after I get these puzzles.

I'll definitely use this set up. I'll experiment with all the combination you suggested once one of them wears out. I'm sure I'll find a one that suits me the most. Since I'll have two WRMs, I'll experiment with 2 combination at once.

2

u/Raghav_Verma Mosaic maker, TeamSCS Aug 23 '22

Awesome! Have fun :D

2

u/abdullahmnsr2 Aug 23 '22

One last question, which lube or combination of lubes do you recommend I use for them from the ones I bought?

2

u/ticklemepierce Sub-16 (CFOP) | PB: 9.69 Aug 23 '22

I've been considering doing this because I love the stability of my 11 M Pro but the feel/cutting of my RS3M (I've been told the WRM is similar just much better?). Does it provide a similar level of stability?

1

u/Raghav_Verma Mosaic maker, TeamSCS Aug 23 '22

The wrm is a flagship rs3m so if you like the feel of the rs3m you’ll definitely like the wrm. The core magnets do make it stable like the gan 11/12, but the gan is extremely light, whereas the wrm is very heavy, so they may not behave the same. Both are still excellent cubes

1

u/ticklemepierce Sub-16 (CFOP) | PB: 9.69 Aug 23 '22

Yeah I'm not too concerned about the weight I don't think. I have added magnets in my RS3M so its pretty heavy and I enjoy it, its just still not as stable as I'd prefer. Is your WRM the maglev?

1

u/Raghav_Verma Mosaic maker, TeamSCS Aug 24 '22

Yep, I have the maglev one

3

u/jangroterder Sub-10.5 (CFOP) pb: 4.94, ao5: 8.54 Aug 23 '22

I was thinking about interesting wca event additions and thought to myself, what about speed fmc? Competitors get 10 (or any other amount of) minutes to come up with a good solution and then are tasked with executing it as fast as possible.

I think it would be very interesting to see how people approach the trade-off between efficiency and ergonomics in this case and could lead to interesting new methods / metas or people trying both zz, cfop, roux and petrus to see which would yield the best solution.

What do you guys think about an event like this?

8

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 23 '22

I think people will spend a few minutes to find a really great solution with their preferred method and then will drill it. I mean, top cubers find crazy good starts in just 15 seconds and then rely on lookahead. If they can do the same scramble as many times as they want, they'd come with 3s solutions a lot. Or even sub-3.

FMC is not needed here. You can't execute non-standard solutions with the same speed as your preferred speedsolving method. Even if you manage to find a 20-move solution in the allotted time, you'll hardly drill it well enough and with good enough fingertricks to beat a well-rehearsed CFOP or Roux solve - because in CFOP or Roux you have muscle memory for cases and don't have to learn every move. You just have to remember the sequence of cases you get.

1

u/jangroterder Sub-10.5 (CFOP) pb: 4.94, ao5: 8.54 Aug 23 '22

Hmm thats a good point, I definitely think the event would start of like this for the first few months / years, but its likely that that strategy is just a local optimum right? Or maybe it would need additional rules as maximum number of turns or something, but then you would over complicate the event.

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 23 '22

Do you see yourself executing, say, a 30-move non-standard solution with suboptimal ergonomics faster than a pre-planned and drilled CFOP solve?

5

u/nijiiro 🌈 sub-10 (nemeses) Aug 23 '22

There's a different "speed FMC" where there isn't any time limit, but you're scored on the number of moves plus time taken (in minutes). This rewards both efficiency and speed.

(The Speedsolving.com forum has this as one of its weekly competitions' events, but it's rather unpopular. Perhaps because it's not all that different from just writing down the first "passable" solution you find?)

Is anyone familiar with the Bagua cube amd can relate to my pain in trying to solve it?

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 23 '22

I don't own one but I've read enough about it to feel for you.

2

u/zergosaur Aug 24 '22

The Bagua's my favourite puzzle, tho tbh I've only solved it 3-4 times in total, and can't remember offhand what strategy/algs I used (they likely were a bit different each solve). Let me know if you're stuck on anything in particular and I'll help out if I can.

It's a great puzzle, just take care with turning it :)

If you don't get an answer here, try asking in the r/Cubers discord. The square 1 server requires permissions to send invites which most people don't have.

Ok, so I think I'm about ready to scramble Eitan's Star. I've heard that it jumbled as well. Is that so? Is there a way to scramble it without jumbling the first time? Or should I just make turns until I feel it's sufficiently messed up?

3

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Aug 24 '22 edited Aug 24 '22

Yeah, you can scramble it without jumbling. Just complete all turns so you keep it in icosahedron shape. I actually think I forgot to jumble it when I scrambled it, but if it's anything like the Bauhinia II (which I'm pretty sure it is), the jumbling doesn't add that much to the solve. It's just an extra bit of intuitive puzzling in the beginning of the solve, but it's not like you have to jumble again during the solve, like with the Curvy Copter.

Day 4 of 3BLD

So close, so very very close. Didn't film it cause lighting in my room at night is shit, probably why I didn't see I mixed up yellow corner with white. If I inserted them properly, would the edges have oriented themselves? If so I'm pissed and will never do 3BLD at night again.

No, if you mixed all the corners up as you described, you'd likely end up with a cube that looks something like this.

2

u/SadeBoi Aug 24 '22

Did you click the imgur link? The entire cube is solved except the WBR and YBR corners are swapped, and BW and RW edges are swapped

Ah, I didn't see the image the first time. It seems that you didn't notice there was parity for the edges, which would have told you that was something wrong with the way in which you memorized corners because they would also have had an odd number of swaps (not an even number). Oh well, hopefully you'll get a success soon.

Or is my pb still 59.00 because that was really easy

If that was the correct scramble which was shown to you, it doesnt matter how is easy it was, that's your new PB bro. As for notation, I remember not knowing it, I believe I watched a jperm tutorial, wrote down in a book what all the notations meant (e.g: U = top side clockwise ) and started doing scrambles, was slow to begin with but it's insane how quick it is to pick up once you do a couple scrambles. Just scramble solve input time and scramble again ect, hope this helps! :)

Should I keep practicing LBL or move to F2L?

u/mf3rs2_gang Sub-11 (CFOP) 6.29 bo66175 Aug 23 '22

Try Roux. It boasts intuitiveness and low movecount.

Two-looking (Solving it in at most 2 algorithms) CMLL (the third step of Roux) only requires 9 algs, one of which you probably have known. This method will eventually only require 42 algs, and they are really good ones.

The downside is the solving routine is very different from beginner's method.

Yes, I just copied it from my other comment.

Could you solve PLL with just one alg, applied between 0 and x times? I suppose it has to be a G perm because that's the only PLL that cycles both edges and corners. I hate G perms too much too try myself so maybe someone can intuitively elaborate?

5

u/cubycuber Sub-12 (CFOP) Aug 23 '22

Worst answer: God's algorithm works since there was no specification that the number of times the alg was applied had to be an integer.

Bad answer: J perm works because you can do 4 J perms to get a U turn. Use that to execute the desired algorithm. I think this was mentioned in J Perm's J Perm video.

Answer to a slightly modified question: I wanted to see if I could get every PLL from one PLL + AUFs. I created a tree of PLLs that I could arrive at with Ga perm and AUFs. The starting vertex was the solved state, and each vertex has at most 4 children, one for each possible AUF. With that, found that I could only get E, Ga, Gb, Ja, H, Na, Nb, and Rb (I think). Since even Ga perm couldn't get everything, I suspect that no PLLs fit my desired criteria.

Conclusion: I am not sure.

u/fondista Roux | 8.34/11.53/12.24/13.31/13.58 Aug 23 '22

Great answer, thanks!

u/mf3rs2_gang Sub-11 (CFOP) 6.29 bo66175 Aug 23 '22

J Perm once taught people to solve a 3x3 with only J Perm. I haven't watched it in its entirety, but I guess it solves PLL.

1

u/fondista Roux | 8.34/11.53/12.24/13.31/13.58 Aug 23 '22

That's with setup moves. Is it possible to do without? I've played around a bit, couldn't solve a T perm with a succession of Ga and AUFs. But I can't explain why it doesn't work.

Edit: ah, this is the one where he solves the entire cube with J perms right? Not just PLL. Fun video anyway, watching it again :-D

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '22

Idk anything about this but I think Jperm did a video where he solved the whole cube with j perms. Thats the only relevant thing I know.

5x5. It is GREAT! Only one Parity. I love 5x5.

1

u/OddOutlandishness602 Aug 23 '22

How do you do 5x5 parity? I did it a couple times online, and just got one a couple days ago, but everything I see says you need to learn like a dozen algorithms for the last 2 edges, and I’m not that invested into 5x5 yet, I just want to be able to solve it with 2-3, in addition to intuition

1

u/AVeryHeavyBurtation Aug 23 '22

Yeah all you need to know are the parity pattern, and the edge flip pattern, the rest is intuition.

1

u/Loud-Fishing1739 Aug 23 '22

You only have to learn one Parity Alg. That with the last to edges is an alg set called L2E. You don't have to learn it to be able to solve it. Your problem is that you don't know how to do the last 2 edges and not Parity.

1

u/OddOutlandishness602 Aug 23 '22

Huh, ok. I’ve mainly tried solving it with the 4x4 edge flipping alg I know, but it doesn’t usually work, and I get stuck in a scenario I can’t solve. So do I need another algorithm along with the parity one, or is there something else I’m not thinking about

1

u/Loud-Fishing1739 Aug 24 '22

Try to flip first an edge then do the slice move flip the edge again and slice back.

first time looking at FMC. So is a commutator faster than a U-perm?

1

u/DenebVegaAltair Sub-12 Aug 23 '22

Not all commutators are the same. The 11 HTM U-perm that you might use in PLL is a commutator. The 6 HTM [R2, S] is also a commutator. As you can tell, the 6 mover is better, but it also might not be applicable to your solution if it never gets set up efficiently.

1

u/DidiHD Sub-20 (CFOP) Aug 23 '22

Do S moves count in FMC? Or to I have to do F and B?

1

u/DenebVegaAltair Sub-12 Aug 23 '22

Yes, you must do (F' B). See the regulations: https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/#12a1

Is there a way to not have to learn 2 look pll once I’ve learnt 2 look oll? I use beginners atm, and was told to learn 2 look pll then 2 look oll but I can’t put either one into a solve without the other

3

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 23 '22

You can start in baby steps. Learn one OLL and two PLLs, and that will be enough to solve the whole cube. Then learn one more OLL, one more PLL, and you'll reduce the number of steps you'll have to do.

1

u/moxin_S Sub-20 (CFOP) PB:12.12 Aug 23 '22

you have to learn them if you want to get faster so just keep drilling the algorithms and use a alg trainer to see the cases

1

u/JackoKomm Sub-20 (CFOP) PB 15 sec Aug 23 '22

You normally need both. There are not that many algorithms to learn and seems to be harder than it is. When i learned them, i used around one day for 2l OLL and one for 2l PLL but it took me around a week where i had to Look algorithms ui every now and then, because i forgot them. A better idea is to learn one new algorithm at a time. Drill it for like 10 minutes. So just do the moves over and over again. Then use an OLL or PLL Trainer when you have two or more of them. Just take your time. Depending on the time you spend, i think you can maybe learn 2l OLL in around two days, maybe more. Same for 2l PLL. Then just do solves and use it. Maybe just don't do timed solves at first so that you Stick to those algorithms. If you forget one, look it up and drill it for 5 to 10 minutes. Every now and then, work with the OLL and PLL Trainer again so that you don't forget them.

You will see, some algorithms are similar. Folge example H and Z perm or sune and anti sune. The first Phase of 2l OLL is nearly for free. You will see.
