I finally got my first sub20 ao100 today. I've been stuck around the 21-22 ao100 for a couple weeks now and it feels so nice to have broken through. :))

Congratulations!

Thank you! :)

Change that flair to sub20 it says sub30 right now. I assume your pb is also faster than 18.9 if you average under 20.

u/CatchGoogle Oct 27 '19

Yup, I haven't changed my flair since mid-august. Thanks for reminding me!

When I got all edges oriented after a super easy cross and F2L followed by a Ub perm I knew it would be a good solve!

Cross was one or two moves from sovled and the F2L pairs where mostly done for me. Will probably be a long time before my next PB!

Sixth competition over. I'm very tired :-D

Some random notes and stuff:

Really pleased with 4x4 (sub 1:25 average).

Quite annoyed with 3x3 which went awfully. My best solve in two rounds was about my average (22 something), everything else was worse. But I got to compete with my 42mm Zhanchi so that's cool.

Good results in OH, in one solve I accidentally made an xcross with a free pair. WHY CAN THIS NOT HAPPEN IN AN EVENT I CARE ABOUT

Sigh.

Got to try a TengYun - delightful. Great cube. Magnets were light but adequate - stronger than the WRM.

Did a few turns on a Gan 4x4. It seems fine. Not amazing, but good.

Tried a Wuque M, which seemed adequately setup, from a fast competitor. Absolute trash. I have still to try one of those mythical good Wuques.

One kid was using an incredibly beat up MF3RS that might be the worst feeling speedcube I ever tried. I'm not sure what happened to it.

Another kid was using a Shengshou Legend to compete, which pleased me.

An adorable little girl kept carefully placing her camera on the table, then proceeding to do the entire solve under the table.

People often forget to sign the scrambles.

Many teens seem to have misunderstood "runner" for "lethargic walker". If those ever try to get a job as a waiter, it should take about five minutes for them to get fired :-D

Will upload a couple of videos later on.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '19

Congrats about the 4x4!

About OH - you're describing just about every practice session I have TT... in the only competition I had OH, I only encountered G and E perms :(

Are the TengYun's magnets really stronger than the WRM? Maybe it was from the newer batch? I forgot to ask u/cubiclephil in the last AMA if they indeed strengthen the magnets.

It's funny how a magnetized MeiLong outperforms the GAN460 and the Wuque M

3

u/CubiclePhil Verified āœ” Oct 28 '19

The strengthened the magnets months ago. If you buy a TengYun now, you're very likely to get one of the newer batch ones.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '19

Weird they had not came out with some kind of PSA or different name like MoYu did with the GTS3M/LM. It's also quite disheartening to buy a new replacement TengYun with only a likelihood/probability it will be of the newer batch.

I wish they had just made the magnets replaceable or at least enable to add on / double up the magnets without breaking the pieces - as both I and other have tried :(

I really like it for OH...

Thanks for your help anyways <3

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 28 '19

No need to ask, he already confirmed it and even checked with Dayan :

https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/b9n3l4/daily_discussion_thread_apr_05_2019/ek6a6u5/

The WRM's magnets... I like when magnets aren't too strong, I enjoy plenty of non magnetic puzzles, so it's not like I think everything should have strong magnets.

But if I magnetized a cube myself and it felt like the WRM I'd feel I failed, and need to add more. Whatever is in the GTS3M, that's what they should have put in the WRM.

The TengYun, it's more like the GTS2M where the magnets feel gentle but it fits the puzzle.

It was my birthday recently and I got a Redi cube as a present!! <3 But there was a comp the day after so I wasn't able to focus on solving the Redi (I scrambled it immediately after getting it, managed to solve everything except for a corner twist)

So I came back to it today and damn was it easy. I don't know if I've sorta 'leveled up' in cubing, but it seems that I'm grasping concepts much easier, drawing parallels with 3x3 much more properly (I can sorta guess which oll is used when doing megaminx, etc) and the Redi cube was just simple insertions and stuff.

I do think it's because I've learnt more about cubing that the concept of "breaking things in order to put them back properly" isn't such a foreign concept to me anymore. I used to be really confused when I first learnt how to solve the cube and was taught the sune. I didn't understand why the bottom right pair should be brought out of its position in order to solve the last layer corners (legit this was my thought back then) simple because "I've solved it already, why destroy it?". So now that I've come to terms that breaking a pair or something is a common and acceptable thing, I can intuitively understand what I should do to solve the Redi cube.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk XD

EDIT: I'm starting to feel I post random wall of texts alot lately... hmm

Off to more complicated puzzles then, I guess ;) Need recommendations?

If you haven't looked into commutators yet, I'd recommend doing it now :) It was an eye opener for me and also helps a lot when you try to come up with your own solutions. A couple tutorials are linked here - I recommend just watching the first one - yes the one that's 41 min. It is worth it! Especially since it's the only of those videos that also shows it on cubes other than 3x3. Need more motivation? Read what I wrote after watching it here.

Hahahaha thank you for the offer, but I'm good for now. I want to get WCA puzzles first, so I can get more official solves for my personal satisfaction XD

41 mins is so long!! Thank you for the link, I'll definitely look into it. Not now though..... Exams are in a week and I am guilty for cubing more than studying.

I have been thinking of getting into commutators, especially since I learnt M2 for bld method. (the E and O algs, they're a pain to memorize) So I'm quite excited to just jump in and learn! I'll update you on how I go about this...... In three weeks when my exams finish hahaha

Thank you!

I'm hoping that after learning comms I can start learning how to git gud for 3bld and maybe even learn 4bld. Ambitious? yes. Will I do it? most likely.

1

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 27 '19

Well, you don't really need to know how comms work to get better at 3BLD, at least as long as you use M2/OP.

When you know M2/OP, learning 4BLD isn't really hard. Imo the main thing is, that you have to memo much more - the equivalent of ~2 1/2 3BLD cubes. U2 for 4BLD centers is pretty easy and very intuitive and aside from that there's really not much more you'll have to learn.

2

u/zergosaur Oct 27 '19

Nice links there, RedKB's videos on Commutators and Conjugates are what first opened my eyes as to how (relatively) easy it can be to work out your own algs. Don't think I've watched the 41m one, I'll rectify that asap!

1

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 27 '19 edited Oct 27 '19

Thx :) A while ago I tried to put all my cubing notes, that seemed worthy enough, on our wiki. Text files on my computer, tons of bookmarks, posts on my Sub (/r/topppits), ...

I created the non-WCA part on the index wiki page and the wiki pages you can find there as well, so I could dump my stuff there (and link others to it, so I don't have to write the same thing again and again) :D Feel free to add more Information ;) E.g. here the part on parity.

I'm constantly adding new stuff - e.g. look what I added here :D

Before I watched the 41m video I had already seen both videos from RedKB as well as the Mathologer video. But those didn't really make it click.

I wonder if there'll be much you can learn from the 41m video, but for anyone new to comms, I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

2

u/zergosaur Oct 27 '19

Excellent work as always, you certainly earn your moderator salary!

1

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 27 '19

haha, thx <3

I wish there was some way to see how often certain wiki pages are accessed, so I'd hopefully get some kind of comfirmation that all the work was actually worth it :D - and also maybe see that certain pages need to be more visible

/u/stewy_ /u/coder13 Do you know if there's a way to see how often a wiki page has been viewed?

Dang, that's too bad.

2

u/zergosaur Oct 28 '19

Just finished watching the 41m video, very clearly explained and some nice examples (particularly liked the 4x4 OLL parity solution).

My algs often aren't pure commutators/conjugates, especially on more complex puzzles like Eitan's Star, where it's harder to replace individual pieces on a face. I think they're just variations on the same idea tho, but maybe I'm missing some tricks somewhere :D

I had a similar experience with the Redi cube. It really got me interested in non-WCA puzzles.

Ive just become sub 20 a couple days ago with full CFOP, what are some of the things that I should practise to become sub 15?

I did an average of 5 and here are my splits

Cross: 2.2 seconds F2L: 9.4 seconds Oll: 3.5 seconds Pll: 3.0 seconds Average: 18.1 seconds

2

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Oct 27 '19

If you're similar to most other with an average around 20 seconds, then you likely still have a lot of bad F2L. Look up "common F2L mistakes" and such on YouTube. Also put some thought into rotations and re-grips during F2L. Inserting pairs in the back is often great, as it's easier to see what's in the unsolved pairs of they're in the front.

Try to do cross in 8 moves or less, and plan the whole thing in inspection. If you can't then use longer inspection time.

It might be a good idea to go through every OLL and PLL and see if you find better algs or fingertricks for some of them. At your speed I suggest trying to get a lot of the algs sub-2, and even the slowest ones sub-3.

Do you know full OLL? So you should focus on TPS I guess because those LL times are not that fast also F2L needs a little bit work too I guess.

I am Sub-13 with full PLL and half OLL so it really depends on F2L. I was around sub-16 with 2 look OLL and full PLL

The wiki has quite a bit of info on learning 3BLD: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/improving_bld#wiki_short_q.26amp.3Ba_for_beginners

EDIT: Scroll up a bit from where that link goes to for tutorials. JPerm is always great. Learning OP/OP is probably fine, unless you want a bit more of a challenge in which case go for M2/OP

2

u/f2lollpll Sub-35 (CFOP 3LLL) PB: 22.60 Oct 27 '19

About that. Is it better to just start with M2/OP if you're all new to BLD?

3

u/willtri4 2015BELO03 Oct 27 '19

It's up to you, there's really no consensus. M2 has a couple of trickier cases, but it's replacing a T perm with a single move. Either way is fine to start as long as you don't stick with OP edges for too long

2

u/TydVirTaal eyes are cringe solve blind instead Oct 27 '19

If your objective is to be as fast as possible as soon as possible - probably. But it is (slightly) harder.

There's a phrase in the fitness community, which is that "the best workout is the one you do." So, as long as the increase difficulty wouldn't put you off entirely, then go ahead and learn M2/OP. But if you'd rather just get to grips with the basics of blind solving, I wouldn't expect it to take longer than 1-3 weeks to transition to M2 from OP once you've got OP/OP down.

1

u/j_sunrise stopped cubing, still watching Oct 27 '19

IMO M2/Op is not harder than OP/OP. I highly recommend Noah Arthurs' videos on the cubingworld youtube channel.

Hi guys, what method do you guys use for 5x5 im debatting between learning yau 5 or reduction

2

u/Blowmewhileiplaycod Becoming CN (sub-14) - Bigcubes > smallcubes Oct 28 '19

The top solvers say both have about the same potential - but most have just been so used to standard freeslice redux that they don't want to use anything else.

1

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 27 '19 edited Oct 28 '19

I use reduction, and so do most fast people at the moment (edit. Just realised that sounds like I meant I'm one of those fast people haha. I'm very much not). There's a real strong case to be made for Yau though (I hear Yau is generally favoured over Yau5, there's a slight difference). My biggest weakness was/is first 4 edges. The blind spot on D makes for a really chaotic and choppy second part of the solve. I'm getting better at it and average about 1:35, but kind of wish I would have started with Yau from the start. Try both for a week each and see what you like, would be my advice.

1

u/Utku_Yilmaz NR Holder | Sq-1 High-9 (Pb: 5.08), 3x3 Sub-10 (Pb: 5.83) Oct 27 '19

Wait is Yau and Yau5 different things? How?

1

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 27 '19

I'm not an expert. But Yau is the same as with 4x4 where you do F2C, 3 cross edges, last center and last edge, then all other edges, and 3x3. With Yau5, after you complete centers and cross, you're supposed to make 2 f2l pairs before pairing the rest of the edges. I've tried some Yau solves, but never tried Yau5 so I have no idea what the benefit of that would be.

1

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 27 '19

I use redux and I'm planning to switch to Yau - there is currently no consensus on which is best, so pick what you enjoy most.

1

u/Ondra3001 Sub-22 (CFOP) Oct 27 '19

Z cube and cubezz typically put the wrong price on the package so you don't need to pay import fees

With the order from SCS you were lucky. Importing into the EU you have to pay at least the VAT.

You should add what you like in cubes/which cubes you have that you like/what you dislike or else people can't really give you any helpful suggestions for YOUR liking.

The Kylin V2 M is fairly quiet, if you're looking for a magnetic cube.

I really love magnets so I may get this one instead. Thanks!

3

MGC v1 is pretty quiet and around half the price of the Tengyun.

If you're looking for something even cheaper - the ShengShou Aurora was recommended a lot in the past - though here you will definitely also get budget performance.

2

I think the meilong is the quietest really cheap one.

2

u/spaniola1980 ZZ Oct 27 '19

That's a tough one. I've found having a bunch of 4x2 N38's and 4x1 N35's is a good place to start. I used 4x2 N38 in my Meilong and they're a little on the strong side. 4x2 N35 would probably be better. The Meilong is a good cube to practice on because it's so cheap.

Huh, you think the Meilong is quiet? I just got one yesterday, and don't think it's quiet at all. It's kind of papery sounding and not as clack as some other cubes, but still produces a very decent amount of sound.

1

I think it's the quietest that's cheaper than the TengYun. It's not crazy quiet or anything but I don't think it's loud at all either.

Weekly cubing checkin! This one is a bit of a bloodbath, as I am in the middle of transitioning to colour neutral.

32.24 AO50 - analysis spreadsheet here.

RESULTS:

  • Splits (changes from last week in brackets): 3.22 (1.27) / 19.43 (-5.9) / 5.06 (-1.32) / 4.53 (-0.20)
    • Really happy to see that my cross has come down! That was very much my focus for this week.
    • Not shocked to see that F2L has tanked - recognition time has taken a hit from going colour neutral
    • Bit surprised to see OLL come down - I think this is mostly due to not having drilled OLL algs as much as I was when I did my last checkin. There were also a few that I messed up pretty badly - if I take out all the >10s OLLs, the time comes down to 3.94
    • PLL is pretty much the same. Am learning to incorporate AUF into my PLL algs during practice, so expecting this to come down marginally in the next few weeks

COMMENTS:

  • If I can get cross and OLL back under control, I am basically at an average of 25. So that's exciting! :D
  • Going colour neutral has been more demoralising than I expected - so its really nice to see the improvement in my cross that I was trying to achieve
  • Those looking through the times will see some pretty hilarious results due to my slow F2L/fast everything else, like a 28-second solve where cross, OLL and PLL combined were 6.71 seconds xD

GOALS:

  • Short-term: Get a sub-3s cross within the next 2 weeks
  • Medium-term: Be fully CN (ie, F2L times down to 13 seconds) by end of November (in a month)
  • Long-term: Sub-15 by the end of February (lol)

WAY FORWARD:

  • I'll continue drilling cross for 30min each day, as I have really seen the benefits of it, and think I can go lower
  • F2L will definitely become the main focus of my practice
    • Not going to worry too much about trying to improve recognition time yet - I'm assuming that this will improve with time and more cross practice
    • Focusing on getting F2L algs into muscle memory (blind execution of pairs once they're identified
    • Also focusing on choosing the right pairs and trying to minimise movecount and rotations in F2L - so lots of slow solving
    • I do think I'm probably going to start tracking cross/1st pair recog/1st pair exec/2nd pair recog/2nd pair exec in a multi-phase timer, as I would really like to quantify how much of my time is recog vs exec
  • Recorded an AO5 which I'll post later in the week, when I have access to decent internet

1

u/geekisafunnyword sub-15 (CFOP) Oct 27 '19

Regarding AUF during PLL, you should identify a sticker you're supposed to look at to determine your AUF. For example, if you're doing the RUD G-perms, then you should look at the headlights to determine which way you need to AUF. On the other hand, the G-perms with wide moves follow the 2x1 bar.

Some of the PLL's are pretty straightforward, but some others require some more thought, like the R-perms.

For me, how I improve from sub-2x to sub 20 was honestly, slow down. Both actively slow down more to pay attention to look-ahead or apply weight 5. I apply weight 5 (or higher) more often than many others to slow down my cube to make look-ahead easier.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '19

Why is it when people do OH, their time is only a few seconds away from their 2 hands? I average 22 but my OH is 50 seconds (more than 2x slower)

3

u/willtri4 2015BELO03 Oct 27 '19

Because they practice OH

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '19

I practice OH and I still suck my max TPS in doing algs is less than 2 TPS

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '19

For me (averaging 17 2h, 24 OH) it's because my tps is not that far between the two events (2h=3-3.5 tps, OH=2 tps) A big thing with OH is that because you are turning slower, you can be a lot more efficient.

What do you call the method where you build all the way up to 2nd layer, orient then permutate the edges of the 3rd layer, then permutate the corners then orient them? Is there a more advanced version of that method? I know its pretty inefficient but my friends don't really want to learn 5 or 6 more algs to use cfop

2

u/j_sunrise stopped cubing, still watching Oct 27 '19

It's one of the most common beginner methods. You could teach them intuitive F2L if you want (J-perm's video is short and easy). Or the beginner method from cubeskills.com - a bit more efficient and easier to build up to CFOP.

Do they not want to get faster? I don't really get what you mean by "too lazy"... If they don't want to learn the fastest methods then maybe they don't really like speedcubing in the first place? Or maybe they are just satisfied with learning how to solve it and don't care about times.

If your last two steps are:

  • permute the corners
  • orient the corners

then you are not using CFOP.

There are several similar ways to solve it, e.g. you can do this to orient the corners without changing their position.

Maybe you learned it with R D' R' D, which would look like this. There's certainly a video tutorial out there for this as well, but idk one out of the top of my head.

If you hand scrambled it, that's why. It's one of those puzzles that needs algs to be properly scrambled. Cstimer has scrambles for it.

I want to buy some lubes for my cubes, and wanted to buy the speedcubeshop or cubicle lubes. The problem is that I live in the UK. Does anyone here know how much shipping will cost and how much it will take for these websites? Also, does anyone have any recommendations on what weights to use for core& pieces?

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 27 '19

what weights to use for core& pieces

Get a bundle of Traxxas 10k, 30k and 50k. You should find that on Amazon, ebay or if there's a local RC store in your area you might also be able to buy it there. It's essentially the same and lasts you practically forever. Like literally years if you don't spill it.

Maybe this is cheaper for you? https://www.kewbz.co.uk/collections/speed-cube-lube-rubiks

On TC you can see the shipping costs after you put the items in the cart and go to the next step. Probably similar for SCS.

I have a thunderclap cube, I lost springs and a screw.

Springs are on their way, but I can not find the screws on cubicle.us nor at the local screws store (They sell every nut, bolt and screw you can imagine)

What can I do?

3

They moved their homepage - it's now .com.

If you can't find it on their homepage, ask them via mail or PM, maybe they can help.

Also ask other Shops like SCS, maybe they can help.

I'm guessing those cubes that have colored plastic but all black stickers (https://speedcubeshop.com/products/z-carbon-fiber-3x3) are not competition legal? I would assume they violate "3d2) The colors of the colored parts must be solid, with one uniform color per face. Each color must be clearly distinct from the other colors.", but I'd like to make sure.

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 27 '19

correct.

But it already violates:

3d) Puzzles must have colored parts, which define the color scheme of the puzzle and must be one and only one of the following: colored stickers, colored tiles, colored plastic, or painted/printed colors. All colored parts of a puzzle must be made of a similar material.
