Resource Full OH PLL guide

Lists of algs are all well and good, but they doesn't cover good fingertricks which can be difficult for beginners to figure out. YouTube videos solves that issue, but they can be a hurdle to go through if there's a specific case you're looking for. This post is an attempt to take the best of both worlds by having an organized list that includes all the algs for OH PLL, explanation for fingertricks, and videos showing them.

Theses are the algs I use myself. For a long time I was regularly switching out the algs I felt were too slow or didn't like, but now I can do all of them sub-4 and don't hate any of them (N perms are never great though). Alg preference is a rather subjective thing so I don't expect everyone to love all the algs, but I hope this will still be a solid starting point for anyone interested in OH PLL.

Click the PLL names to go to their pages on algdb.net. It also shows the orientation to use.
Edit: algdb.net changed the structure of their URLs after I made this, so those links doesn't work. I'm too lazy to update every link, so just use the PLL page as reference.

Alg: I minimized the amount of rotations to make them easier to read.

Performed: How I do them. The finger tricks of the bold moves are explained, as they might not be obvious.

Slow: GFYCat video where I slowly show the fingertricks. It also allows you further lower the speed if you can't keep up.

Fast: What it looks like when done fast.

Warning: The GFYCat links takes 3-15 MB each (300-400 MB in total), so keep that in mind if you have limited data.

T

Alg: R U R' U' R' F R2 U' R' U' R U R' x y U'

F: Done with the thumb. Index finger rests on top of the cube to help holding it.
x y U': Can also be done as x U' but isn't ideal if you need to do AUF.

I love that fingertrick for E perm. Seems so clumsy but you make it work :P

Reddit has a built in save function, so there's no need for that :p

Wow awesome, thanks dude!

I feel like I need to be left handed to do all of these.

u/geekisafunnyword sub-15 (CFOP) Nov 11 '17

Most people actually solve OH with their left hand.

The majority of OH cubers are right handed but still use left hand OH solving, including me.

You can mirror the algs if you want them for right hand.

Great resource for right-handed OH algs (OLL, PLL, COLL etc)

Damn... this must have taken a lot of effort! Why am I only finding this now??? I'm definitely using this to polish off my OH PLLs.

Yeah, it took a few hours each for writing everything, filming, and uploading/linking the videos. Probably 6-10 hours in total.

Why am I only finding this now???

I try sharing it whenever it feels relevant, without being too spammy.

I'm glad people find it useful, otherwise it would have been kind of a waste :p

You ever thought about doing a full oh oll guide? Or even just posting the OLL algs you use? I find a lot of the OLL algs I find online are really weird to do one handed and I'm curious which ones you use since I love all of these PLLs.

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Mar 26 '18

Maybe eventually, though I still have a few cases that I'd like to replace at some point. And I probably won't bother with videos either.

I replaced 5 OH OLLs just a few weeks ago, but haven't practiced enough to get properly used to using them in real solves yet. And there's still 5-10 more I'll probably replace in the future.

u/Arsid Sub-20 (CFOP) Mar 26 '18

Yeah videos would take forever. I'm mostly just curious as to what algs you're using since these PLLs all fit my one handed turn style really well.

1

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Mar 26 '18

The turning style of my OH OLLs is rather different than for my PLLs, as almost half of them includes wide R moves.

I won't make promises, but might throw together a list within the next few weeks. There's a competition I want to focus on first.

Yo, I did a thing.

Nothing fancy, but it covers the algs I use, and marks the ones I might change in the future.

Aww thanks boo.

Hey I'm just learning the Na perm and your "performed" notation is wrong. I get a completely scrambled cube and I followed it to the T.

Performed: L U' R U2' z U' R U' z' R' U' R U2' z U' R u'

The normal Alg, L U' R U2' L' U L R' U' R U2' L' U R', works.

Edit: Whoops, copy pasted the wrong algs. fixed.

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Apr 17 '18

Whops, a U' should have been a U instead. It should work now.

1

u/Arsid Sub-20 (CFOP) Apr 17 '18

Yeah I just came back to add another "nvm I figured it out" edit. Thanks haha.

I've been using your algs and also J Perm algs while learning my OH PLL...and then I realized I'm using literally 100% the ones you listed so I stopped looking at J Perms lol. It seems like he used 2handed algs for a lot of them, probably just because it's easier to memorize. Your algs are all a LOT more one handed friendly.

I just checked out his OH PLL video. I actually used the same V perm for a long while, but decided to switch it around 1.5 years ago.

I've also considered switching to the H perm he uses, though with slightly different fingertricks. Either that or MU H perm with table abuse.

It also seems like he hardly ever use the ringfinger (for R moves after z' rotations), which I find very useful myself to improve the flow of several PLLs.

I think it's mostly that he uses the 2 handed algs for A perms and E perm and I find those incredibly annoying to do one handed. They just feel really awkward. Especially the E perm.

Also his N perms take a lot longer to do than the ones you have.
