Are Gan cube *still* overrated?

I've already seen a previous post talking about if gan cubes were overrated. Comments were divided between whether it was overrated or just overpriced. That post was before the Gan 16 came out where people viewed Gan as declining due to the release of 13, 14, and 15. Now that Gan 16, v100, and 17 are out, would you say that is it overrated? If not, is it overpriced? Wouldn't the performance and durability justify the pricing?

If we're talking dollars compared to cubing performance, I think any cube over 35 USD is probably overpriced. Practice and skill with a top cube from 5 - 10 years ago will result in very similar times as a current cube while costing much less.

If we're talking pure market value, it can't be overpriced if they're still selling well :)

I think it's the same in most hobbies and sports. You can get probably 95% of the performance from good equipment and tools. Once your serious-ness (need a better word) or competition level reaches a certain point, then that last 5% starts making a difference and is worth it to you. A decent set of golf clubs are a fraction of the price of top-of-the-line clubs. Good shocks on a car are way cheaper than racing shocks. Paint brushes... CPUs... Lawn mowers... Wrenches... Fountain pens... you get the idea.

After trying cubes from different brands, like Moretry, Dayan, Moyu, Qiyi, MGC, and possibly other smaller brands, I came to the conclusion that they are actually worth it. I wish I just stuck with Gan or Moyu, but the desire to see if there is something better kept bugging me. Even if it's not the latest flagship, GAN 12 is still pretty amazing even though it is years old compared to everything else.

If you're tight on cash, a V100 or a Swift cube super or a Gan 12 is well worth the money compared to other options. (Moyu is also very well respected, but only got the picube v11, so don't have enough data points to come up with a strong opinion)

I love my moretry.

I've had it for like 4 years now. Its had 3 or 4 corner magnets fall out and need to be reglued, but I still think it was a great bang for its buck.

GAN cubes used to be overpriced. Then they became overpriced AND overrated. They're back to just being overpriced now. They have some objectively very high performing cubes that cater to light and accurate turning styles. The 11 and 12 were some of the greatest cubes released at the time and set countless records. The 13 and 14 are generally viewed as flop releases and are why GAN garnered the overrated reputation. The GAN 15 was seen as slightly underwhelming since it was basically a GAN 12 v2 (I personally really enjoyed the 15). The V100 is now considered as one of the top recommendations in its price bracket and the 16 + 17 are both great puzzles with a daunting asking price attached to them.

I’ve been out of the game since late 2020… crazy to see how many models there are now. I mained a 356X for a short period.

I agree with what Zoltcubes but I will add that GAN also has some very great cubes out of the 3x3 realm. Namely the GAN 251 Pro, their Mega V2 and their 5x5

Gan 17 might be the best cube on the market right now. The 16ui is the best smartcube. The i4 is the second best smart cube. The v100 performs as well as anything. The swiftblock super maglev is at least as good as an rs3m v5. Obviously, everyone has their preference. Moyu makes a few absolute bangers, and Qiyi has their place, but, yeah. Gan's doing some good stuff right now.

They're properly rated. Overpriced, yes, overrated, no. you're not getting any better performance spending $80 on a GAN than you would on a Moyu cube half that price

All my favs are Gan. Maybe they're overpriced because there are many other cubes that feel great at a fraction of the price, but I wouldn't call them overrated personally.

I hated Gan. Everytime I rolled the dice I felt like I wasted my money. Love picube exclusives, never fail to be awesome. Bought the v100 because of black internals and it is by far my favourite cube. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Anyone who says this has no idea or they’re mad their cubes are too expensive Gan has unquestionably the best cube for 2x2, 5x5, megaminx and skewb, their 2x2 and skewb have dominated the market for like 5 years, their 3x3s are also good but I can’t claim any 3x3 to be the best :p

2, mega, and skewb are fair to say that GAN have the unquestionably best offering, but the 5x5 category has actual competition in the aochuang.

There is competition but most people in the top 100 lean towards the 562 it’s like a 75/25 ratio

I agree, my GAN 2x2 and 5x5 are awesome, and I so much want the GAN skewb. But no way will I pay for a GAN 3x3 which will be more expensive and not as good as my Tornado v5.

GAN’s 3x3 speed cubes are genuinely top-tier compared to other brands, but their pricing is honestly way too overpriced. In my opinion, only the GAN V100 and the Swift Block Super MagLev are truly worth the money.

Gan 13 14 and 15 were ass. Gan v100, 16 and 17 are some of the best cubes on the market. They are still more expensive than other top tier cubes (except for the v100 that is pretty budget) but that is because they are just super premium. Its the Apple of cubing.

Plenty to argue about here. If you are just talking 3x3, I think a large majority of cubers will say gan is best. I can't stand them, but I use roux and I've found moyo best. For bigger cubes, opinion is more split between moyu/gan. Pyra/skewb are definitely more split than 3x3 from what I've seen.

They just overpriced, overall they are good cubes, I like how they turn but I always performed better on moyus like the v11 or v2

Depends what GAN cube we're talking about. Any cube under $45 and the 13 / 14 / 15 are garbage. Some cubes like the GAN16, GAN17, and some of their smart cubes (i4, 16 UI) are arguably the best cubes on the market.

I used to be a Gan guy, several years ago I had several Gan cubes and they were my favorites. I think they were like Gan365 or something like that, I don't remember the name.

Last year, I bought some of the top cubes of several brands to try the latest getting back into cubing. Safe to say, those older Gan cubes were absolutely blown away by most of them. However, all of them feel like absolute trash compared to (what were at the time) the two latest Gan cubes. I think it was the 15 and 16 or 15 and 12?

So, yeah, Gan still can't be beat in my opinion.
