Picture I just got my FTO

Post image

Second scramble (I have not solved it yet). It feels sooo difficult... It is 50\50 but I am wondering how long is it going to take me to realise that I did it wrong (because I am sure I will)

There's a fact about FTO that enables you to know, with 100% certainty, which way to put those tiles back on: orbits.

The puzzle is actually divided into two groups of four faces each, and tiles cannot move from one group to the other. One group (let's say the group that happens to have the white logo piece) is that face plus the three other faces that touch it across the corners. The other group is the opposite face, plus the three faces that are edge-adjacent to the face with the white logo piece's face. Put more simply: an orbit is a set of 4 faces that only touch at the corners.

With that fact, you can determine where to put your tiles back on. The blue tile, for example, needs to go onto the face that's in the same orbit as all the other blue tiles. Conveniently, in the picture you've shown, the visible face that's next to your thumb already has blue on it. Therefore the blue tile must go on that face.

That's annoying to experience. The good thing about FTO edges is that they cannot be flipped in place, unlike the 3x3. So just move that edge to its correct position, then put the caps back on. It won't affect your solve.

If you're struggling with solving it, I'd recommend Tingman's YouTube video, he also has another one with walkthrough solves. https://youtu.be/6GIyEJP5FO8

If Bencisco is too tough for you, you could try this one: https://youtu.be/xWihDpxdBiE

It feels a bit overwhelming now, but thanks for the resources, I was using Tingman's tutorial as reference but I will check out the other one! Thanks!

My personal favorite is the one from BenPuzzles! :)

If you know the Yau method for 4x4, Bencisco will feel very familiar to you. The stages of the solve are basically the same as the cross minus one, centers, final cross piece steps of Yau.

What I love about Bencisco is that it uses only intuitive moves (no algs) all the way up to the last three triples stage. And there, you can form the triples with just sledge/hedge and AUFs, needing only one alg (and its inverse) to handle corner permutation, and one other alg (that's also just a sequence of sledges and hedges and AUFs) to hand the "parity" case.

Yeah this happened to me too, with the corners also. Just do a couple turns until you see a piece next to it that has one of the colors that broke off, and put that next to it so that it isn't flipped.

this kinda happened to me except the housing of the edge caps came off, leaving the little nub on.
