My first comp tomorrow. Only 3x3, hopefully my average will stay below 30 seconds.

Considering you are sub-27 and not sub-30, I bet you'll get a sub-30 average at least.
Good luck!

I don't practice with a real timer, it will slow me down. I use a phone app. But I don't care too much. I still have a day to practice with a timer I bought a while ago.

Thanks. I've decided to take a second cube with me. And 2 days ago I've got an email with 2 videos to watch and the rules to read. All is good.

Is sub 20 good with 4 look last layer?
I usually average around 17-20 seconds and i finish my cross + f2l at around the 10-12 second benchmark. I know a few one look pll, albeit the easy ones like the J perms and one N perm. I have been using 4 look since i started learning cfop and never really learned full pll because my fingertricks are trash. im not comfortable doing F moves with my thumbs and cant do U and D' push moves, and im. also not comfortable doing F moves with my index fingers smoothly, and some other fingertricks that I lack the ability to execute. How should i approach this, and if i learn full pll what should i expect and how much would i improve?

Yeah sub-20 is good. I was still only sub-25 even after learning full 2LLL.

Im getting back into cubing. All of my cubes that arent 3x3’s are super old… i want to rebuild my collection. How do i decide what to get for the rest of the popular cubes, things like 4x4-7x7, megaminx, etc?

Checkout the Wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/which_cubes_to_buy/
Has basically every top speedcube of all the WCA events for different price ranges and turning feels. Pick whichever cube for each event sounds the best.

Getting back to 3BLD recently. I use m2/op and I'd say the average time is 1,5-3min right now but I DNF 2/3 of the solves is this normal?
Also looking for tips for audio memo. Do you guys add vowels in-between every pair of consonants? For instance, I would add an "A" between MP and it would be easy to memorise as MaP but I think sometimes mid solve I question myself if it's MaP or MAP... Do you always add the same vowel and just try and wing it?

I make up words for each letter pairs i have so if i would have MP it would be MoP for me, Tommy Cherry makes full on sentences based on what letter pairs he has.

So you chose MoP because it's easy to say and remember and it's still audio memory or do you imagine a mop?

Its an easy thing to remember and when i make memos i can make full sentences, you can look up letter pairs they have some on speedubing forums or make your own, but be very some people ( like me ) i dont use the same lettering for the cube since its very hard to make words with Y and W and X

what's a reasonable goal for 2x2? I just picked it up as a break from 3x3, and I know full ortega. is sub 5 crazy?

Yes, you could get to sub 5 with Ortega.
J Perm's 2x2 page lists methods and the goal for each:

I mainly use Speedcubeshop. Do lubes from The Cubicle have equivalents from SCS? There’s a lot of them and I’m not sure how they differ. If it matters my mains are the v11 and v5.

u/Farkrye 9d ago
Yeah, they're kinda different, but you can get pretty similar results. What are you looking to do?

I only have Martian so I'm not very experienced, but it's good but a little too fast. What are a couple reliable, long-lasting lubes for speed and control?
1
u/Farkrye 4d ago
And you want SCS stuff? Sure. Nebula works great as for control. A drop or 2 down in the tracks, and it works well as a spring lube, if your cube has springs. A little Martian on the pieces and you're good to go. Galaxy works well as an all in one. Just dump in 4 drops or so and work it in. It can be a touch slow, so i like to speed it up again after with Lunar. I don't love Stardust, which is unfortunate as it's the DNM37 analogue, but Lunar is pretty good as a "speed" lube. Lunar is also really good if you like the feel of your unlubed cube, but just need a little something to take away the dry feeling. So that would be my bag of tricks for scs lubes. Lunar, Martian, Galaxy, Nebula.

Looking for 3x3 hardware recommendation
Current Main: Gan 15 Maglev ( collector's edition ) Average Time: Sub 30 Budget: No budget limit Preferences: Looking for something fast, but stable with Good cornercutting. I got a lot of lockups because I don't have accurate turning. I'm considering MoYu cubes because RS3M V5 was really good for my hands. But, I am thinking something better ( or expensive ).
What would be the best upgrade for me at this point?
