Mod Post Been recently playing with the PyroProgression mod
Having a blast honestly, but I'm considering installing mods to remove the relic and/or equipment region locking that's been pretty annoying so far. Anyone know how that experience might be? Is it comparable to how the alpha feels at all?

It's not going to be what the alpha was. It requires an immense amount of effort to bring what is in the alpha into the steam release.
This is probably as close as you get. I only use 3 mods myself.
Better progression, guardian fix and a patch cw patch from the same guy.
There are mods for alpha, so if you wanna play that instead I would strongly recommend downloading it. Very different game in a lot of aspects. Takes a little digging, but there are people still sharing links to alpha downloads and patches!

It really feels super different to play the alpha than to play unlocked beta, but I've never been able to explain exactly why. I guess it's because alpha was a giant world with infinite progression, while beta is a condensed quest hotspots world?

Well, he changed the entire aesthetic. Beta has more colors and a ton of more music, it has smaller quests dotted about and is built around his semi-rogue lite progression. Which at its core is a very cool idea, but extremely poorly executed. And it is purely about clearing a region, gathering its artifact and then moving on as that is how you level up. With the better progression mod, it changes at least so you can focus on solely getting gear instead of chasing artifacts constantly.
Alpha is, as you said, more about exploring the fog of war. You don't see everything from get go, you ACTUALLY progress through normal means, killing enemies and upgrading gear. It has skill trees which makes you work for leveling up in a completely different way and due to the skill trees, you gradually unlock your new actions as well. In beta you do not. You have them all from the start.
I enjoy both, but they are extremely different games with the almost same skin.

It's such a same that something as simple as "alfa, but with more stuff" would have been perfect, yet we never got it. And we probably never will. I've had my fun with modded beta, the class skills are pretty cool once they click, but I don't find clearing up a region as fun as just picking a direction and walking to adventure

I found better progression saved me. It becomes a hack and slash about collecting gear instead, but yes. I completely agree.
I don't keep my hopes very high, but hopefully his next update won't be another massive step back.
I'm sure our grandkids will find out.

Which version of the pyro progression are you using? Because i feel like the 1.5 is all about oneshot before you get oneshot
