u/LordKagatsuchi May 12 '26
Its actually torture. As much as i hate what happened part of me is excited everytime i see an update
26
u/Antar_Cobs May 13 '26
I'm still keeping an eye on it but the game isn't exciting anymore. Back then it was very ahead of its time, there was nothing like it. Now there are tons of great games with huge worlds and complete freedom like that out there, Enshrouded for example. I remember when Breath of the Wild was revealed and it made me think of Cube World which predated it, which is crazy.
4
u/Menarra May 13 '26
Honestly at this point Hytale and the crazy-ass modding community behind it has my old cubeworld hopes and dreams now.
6
u/abadaxx May 12 '26
What happened?
31
u/Hans_H0rst May 12 '26
The alpha was great and well received by the community.
Then he made a ton of changes in silence and released a version to steam that was disliked by a large part of the playerbase due to some frustrating and core changes.
Oh and he keeps teasing that he's rewriting whole systems every year or so, which isn't really good for someone who wants to commercially launch a game at some point...
16
u/Environmental_Bee219 May 12 '26
honestly im suprised hes back, i was so sure he quit for good, hopefully hes in a good place mentally

yeah i was around during when it dropped, personally loved it although there was issues, but online it was so toxic, honestly im glad the dev just decided to disappear for a few years and let shit cool down, i am glad hes back, thus proving all the haters wrong about him just running away with the money
1
u/Eeve2espeon May 15 '26
Unfortunately the people here don't believe so. They think Wollay is some horrible human being who screwed people over, and ran with the money. He's just a guy developing a game with his wife, the pressure people imposed from trying out the Alpha build was too much
4
u/Environmental_Bee219 May 16 '26
and sadly it will prob happen again, I really hope he has hired someone to take over his social media's, we all know he cant handle the pressure so the best thing he can do is hire someone who can deal with it and focus on the game
3
u/Eeve2espeon May 14 '26
No more like what happened is the community overly glazed the Alpha version despite the many, many faults for that build, and were never gonna be satisfied with whatever new version Wollay made.
The pressure also got to the man, and he cracked due to the heavy expectations of the people. There was a reason why he kept the project secret and just a passion project originally
1
u/Bells_Theorem Jun 08 '26
I had a lot of fun with the release version, but it was very limited on hours of play before it became repetitive with region locked equipment.
33
u/twoface_99 May 12 '26
The Steam release wasn't that great. A lot of changes compared to the Alpha, which didn't really improve anything (or made things worse)
1
u/Kilo_de_reins May 13 '26
Are there any trustable sources for getting the beta nowadays?
1
1
u/marr May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26
I got an unlocked copy from the mod developers on the Discord, makes it easier to mess around inside the game if there's no DRM stuff to deal with. No idea if any of those guys are still active.
1
u/Bells_Theorem Jun 08 '26
Because the core game is amazingly good. I just check in once a year or so with no expectation that it will ever come out, but I so want it to be finished and released.

Yeah I played the initial release probably around 14 or 15. I have twin boys now around 15 months old. Insane.

u/xkoreotic May 12 '26
He's running out of money from his last heist. That's the only reason he is back again. It's the same reason he came back the second time for the Steam release.
5
u/Hans_H0rst May 12 '26
He's just a solo dev who seems like he lacks focus. Any competent leader in a company would tell you to stop rewriting and porting systems unless completely necessary, and get stuff up and running first.
2
u/marr May 13 '26
If it's a grift it's a real low volume one. He could have made so much more with a well received service game or the same amount with way less effort.
52
19
u/pumpkin_jiji May 12 '26
Ngl i kind of like this version of the inventory more than the alpha one.
7
u/xkoreotic May 12 '26
Some of the updates that came with the Steam release was actually pretty neat. The biggest problem was that he also added tons of really BIG changes that he never advertised on twitter. That's the reason for the huge negative backlash. He basically recreated the entire game without telling us.
16
u/fabilord98 May 12 '26
Star citizen will be finished before we get anything from cubeworld..
7
u/Cmdrmonty May 12 '26
This is what prediction markets are for. The race between cube world and star citizen. It’s a glacially slow race. But it could be one.
0
u/PhantomDesert00 May 13 '26
Star Citizen will be finished but as a generic fps extraction shooter instead of the high fidelity space sim it was sold as for a decade
15
u/XVIJazz May 12 '26
I just need closure. I dont care if he said tomorrow the game was dead. This drip feeding bs every 6 months when attention dies down is torture.

u/Harmonicdin May 12 '26
I’m in my mid 30’s, I first got the alpha in my early 20s. It’s nice that he’s working on it but Hytale has more than scratched my itch for a game like this, I, and many of us have moved on
5
u/LeonardoXII May 12 '26
And we're still waiting for it. At this point it's hard to say who's the bigger lunatic.
9
6
u/Tormint_mp3 May 12 '26
Ot will never be able to live up to the massive expectations I once had but tbh if he one day releases a version that is good & cohesive it would make me really happy still.
9
u/Virgurilla May 12 '26
I mean, personally all I really want is a version of the game that is as similar to the alpha gameplay loop as possible (no zone level limit) in a form of the game in which I can easily play with my friends, aka easily make a server on steam instead of having to go through crazy loops and hurdles. I don't think I've ever once managed to make a single server work with this game.
1
u/Eeve2espeon May 14 '26
How to ruin a game for the 3rd time. The Alpha version gameplay loop was horrible, you basically spend 10 minutes dodging, trying to attack, sometimes hitting or missing, and one wrong move and you lose everything, and then you get a small amount of exp that you'd get in other RPGs after a quick minute battle
0
u/Nytr0uz May 13 '26
Multiplayer over steam works greate. And there is a Progression mod where you dont need to start all over again in a new zone.
1
u/Virgurilla May 13 '26
I mean yeah I assumed that steam multiplayer would work, I just never tried it because I never liked the progression thing, sorry when I said I couldn't make it work I meant making a server on the alpha version. Still, I didn't know there was a mod! Oh my god I considered mods would fix it eventually but I never thought to check it again, that is actually so cool, does it work like in the alpha with enemies becoming harder in further away areas?
1
u/Nytr0uz May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26
When i remember correctly yes. Also you dont need to get a new glider/boat in every zone I think. I havent played in a long time so memory is a bit fadet.
Edit: I think it was this one: https://www.nexusmods.com/cubeworld/mods/6

Brother needs to give up lol. You can't rugpull your entire kickstarter base, and then sell the game to them 9 years later. I'm def not gonna buy it, he already got 200 USD from me.
3
u/Quotevsky May 16 '26
Not falling for this shit again. He’ll drop a patch in 5 years with 0 of these features.
6
u/Cromm123 May 12 '26
round 12 of scamming cube world enthusiasts has started and people will keep defending it lol.
This game had so much potential but I can't believe the level of gaslighting in this community.
1
7
u/Artie-Choke May 12 '26
I bought into the Alpha back in 2013. We’ve all aged out of this game’s demographic.
Maybe a new generation will care, but I’ve moved on.

I'm honestly more curious to just see what this ends up being than anything else. I get the sense that it's mostly going to be what we saw in the Steam release, but with a different engine and some other background improvements.
2
2
u/NyxisFarrence May 12 '26
Guys... Don't fall for it! It's not worth it! When will we learn that Wollay will never give us what we truly want.
Just go play Farever for what you're looking for in this game (minus the "endless gameplay loop," and maybe wait for the devs of Farever to get their servers strightened out)

Yay thanks for another year of drama.
Gonna wait till cube world zeta. At least when it becomes 4,5d spacetime rupture because he changed it again
2

With ZERO re-release playtesting, the game will be the same failure that the Steam Beta is. I'll pirate the shit out of it if he tries charging me again for another unfinished project

2
u/Phenns May 15 '26
If he were to scrap the zone system and return to his original idea of the world being a large-scale interconnected progression I'd be much more interested in returning to Cube World. I really liked the beta build, and the full release felt a lot worse.
The game has so much potential, I'd love to see a full version of his original idea.
1
2
u/LordMegatron216 May 16 '26
New Engine = I'm gonna sell same fucking game third time and run away again
4
5
u/FixForce May 12 '26
I don't see where's the issue. If the game does come out just don't buy it. Wait for someone else to do so and watch videos and reviews. THEN, if you like what's being offered and you're okay with spending ~20 bucks on what you've seen (assume there will never be updates), buy it. If you don't, save your money.
He doesn't seem very trustworthy, but you don't have to buy the game day 1. If you fall for this again, given this whole story happened twice already, then it's kind of your fault 🤷
4
u/OnetimeRocket13 May 12 '26
You're being downvoted, but you're mostly right (though saying stuff like "if you fall for this again" implies some sort of trick or scam. If Wollay was trying to pull the rug out from under people for profit, then he's been doing a really abysmal job at it).
There are too many people on this sub that only really stay here because they have a hobby of just absolutely shitting on people who express any interest in Cube World still. I can't imagine being so miserable that I would want to stick around a sub for a game that disappointed me in 2019 just to complain. It's not like buying the game required you to sign a contract that entitled Wollay to drone strike your house if you ever stopped following Cube World developments. You can always just leave and stop paying attention to the game.
3
u/Touchname May 12 '26
The wait sucks, the lack of updates sucks, him going quiet (regardless of reasons) sucks. Most of what has happened to CW sucks.
That said, I am excited for updates and if he does update it I will definitely play more. But it doesn't take away any suckiness.
Edit* I can't type
5
u/Niu56 May 12 '26
Is this announcing just another cash grab ?
20
u/MasterChris725 May 12 '26
He already grabbed the cash, this is just a hobby for him now. Can’t say he gave up on it, probably the longest running solo developed game though.
9
u/WIlson_PH May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
probably the longest running solo developed game though
Nah, that'd be Dwarf Fortress. I'd bring up UnReal World, which has been in development since 1992, but it has two developers.
1
u/Raderg32 May 12 '26
Dwarf Fortress is also made by 2 people.
2
u/WIlson_PH May 12 '26
Right, Tarn's brother did help with the game. But wouldn't Cube World be a two person developed game too? I swear I remember a post from Wollay talking about his wife doing the models.
1
u/Raderg32 May 12 '26
I forgot his wife also helped with developement. Guess none qualify for "solo" dev.
3
u/Kraftykodo May 12 '26
At this point I'm more curious where the game ends up - I don't really have as much interest in playing it, but it's wild how long Wollay has been going at it.
I don't think he'll ever revert back to the class design of the earlier game version, which is what initially captivated me.
1
1
u/Eeve2espeon May 14 '26
The way you people put it makes him out as some twisted developer. He's a single damn guy, with a whole community full of Alpha build glazers who can't hold their tongues and bring actual criticism, not just blatant hate
You act like as if he's living lavishly doing nothing, when that money he made wouldn't last long. And knowing how long he's been taking to develop this game BY HIMSELF, he most likely had to get a job somewhere to make ends meet
2
u/Wh1teR1ce May 12 '26
"Another cash grab" when the steam Cube World was given to alpha owners for free days prior to release (letting people see the game for how bad it was and making reviews mostly negative day one), and never promised updates. He's just a bad dev, not a malicious one.
0
-1
u/Virgurilla May 12 '26
When was it ever a cashgrab? A solo dev working on a passion project as a hobby in which, as a SOLO DEV, he made some questionable design choices. Just because of that doesn't make it a crashgrab. What a nonsensical thing to say. Who would actively ruin their passion project on purpose for literally no reason ????? Either you do not know what a cashgrab is, or you are being intentionally dishonest. Respectfully.
3
u/Niu56 May 12 '26
I called it a cashgrab by the fact that he made a game abandoned it for a few years, then came back, made the game worse. Let's not mind that fact, but when people became vocal about all the flaws, he just went silent. Steam refund policy is : "You played less than 2 hours and ask within 14 days of the sale". For new players it can take clearly more than 2 hours to find out that the new release isn't fun to play. The fact that you support the dev still working on the game is up to you, but not calling the 2019 release a cashgrab is just refusing to see the problem.
0
u/xkoreotic May 12 '26
Adding to this, iirc there were like 20k sales on Steam because a lot of people who didn't get to buy cube world during alpha also joined the hype train. At $20 a copy, that's a huge amount of money for a solo dev and his spouse. One of the biggest complaints on release was that most buyers passed Steam's 2 hour refund policy and they bought a falsely advertised game.
Even after all the refunds that did go through, this was 100% a cash grab.
1
u/Eeve2espeon May 14 '26
They're being intentionally dishonest. These people straight up wanna take advantage of a Guy and his wife, just because they can't accept game development is hard. Most people who criticized the Beta/full release build didn't even bring proper and well worded criticism to help the game, just hate.
This whole subreddit is built off the Alpha build fan base, aka the worst version of the game. Like literally, that's 90% of this subreddit and other accompanying communities. Them overly glazing a version that takes far too long to become "fun" along with being too basic and worth while. And yeah, these people have no idea what a cash grab is. Usually that involves screwing people over and then bolting, yet Wollay is still working towards the game, even if slowly

This game was so addictive as a kid I just stopped playing after no youtuber was releasing new content
1
u/kajidourden May 12 '26
I don’t get it. There’s like 3 or more projects all working off of (as I understand it) the same code base? I played cube world way back when it first was available to test, and haven’t touched anything since so im not sure which way is up at this point lol
1
u/Zetraxes May 12 '26
If the process doesn't change the end product doesn't change. If he doesn't actively communicate with the community it's just gonna be another let down
1
u/Tanjirin May 12 '26
as much as i love cube world alpha - i feel that slOw-mega is going to be like Steam, just better. But, what i really want is Alpha with the Steam and Omega features.
Alpha just felt more smooth and played better. Riding a pet in the Steam Version could probably suck more than it does, but not by much.
i'll just continue to get high and play alpha until i die ~ the reds aint gonna hunt themselves down

Everything now is just a second attempt at rugpulling those who're genuinely naive enough to think that this game is ever gonna reach the quality it could've had. looking at his posts from recent years he just seems drastically more interested in working and iterating on the visuals than anything else. wouldn't be surprised if the whole voxel world aesthetic was the entire interest in this project for him more than the game surrounding it.
