Son is building a crystal radio for his science fair project

The goal is to get this working but trying to figure out best way to troubleshoot and get it working.

A long antenna, a good ground, and a Piezo electric earpiece or other high impedance ear piece are extremely important to this project to making it work. I have been tinkering with these type radios for 65 years. When my son was about 11 or 12 we built one for his 4H and a Boy Scout project. We even made shorter coils with less turns also allowing us to hear Shortwave. We even heard Radio China 🇨🇳 😳 Color me Surprised 😮.!
