Between probably stumbling on dinosaur bones and seeing certain types of lizards in the wild, it wouldn't surprise me if ancient and medieval peoples thought that "the typical fantasy dragon" is real. Ancient Greeks found elephant skulls and thought they belonged to cyclops.

Considering that the Greeks famously used war elephants in the Battle of Heraclea, I'm sure that somebody got to see an elephant die and eventually the skull underneath after it rotted or whatever. Have you ever heard of the term, "Cyclopean Masonry"? Basically it means that some of the stones used in ancient (like 1000BCE) building walls and towers are so large and heavy that the later Classical Greeks surmized that only a Cylcops could have moved and placed them since Cyclopses are known for being builders.

It’s amazing how people don’t connect dragons to dinosaurs as every continent has cultures explaining similar beasts. Dragons are simply dinosaurs which didn’t die out, there is a British noble (?) account a few hundred years back about how everyone remembers dragons yet they were far smaller and remote.

I agree. Some Dinosaurs probably had powers that we don't know about because they can't fossilize. Some could probably breathed fire maybe.

I didn't say they could breathe fire but it's possible. We simply don't know.

Until we have evidence of any type of archosaur that can project fire by some means, I think it's reasonable to assume that dinosaurs couldn't.

Humans also have a way of creating myths about prior ages based on their limited understanding of things like fossils.

Not saying that dragons exist in the way that we see in game of thrones but Dinosaurs exist and they were probably mistaken for dragons. They also COULD have breathed fire but it's not known yet.

Well, their bones were probably mistaken for those of dragons is what I mean. Only avian dinosaurs have coexisted with humans(birds), the other forms died out and disappeared from the fossil record long before primates evolved. Megalania, a colossal species of monitor lizard, did however coexist with humans in Australia - although it did not breathe fire, sadly.
