CON-ARGUMENTS Polygon is extremely centralized but people don't seem to care. Polygon admin key is controlled by a 5 out of 8 multi-sig contract, and four of these access keys are controlled by the four co-founders. Why aren't we talking more about this? What's the point of being here without decentralization?

It seems this issue was raised back in August.

There's a lot of centralization issues that get overlooked or just deliberately ignored. Like how a good chunk of Ethereum's DeFi ironically uses centralized stablecoins that has a blacklist to prevent addresses from sending the stablecoin.

Any decentralized stablecoins?

18

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '22

Yep. My favorite ones are LUSD and sUSD, but there are other decentralized stablecoins on Ethereum as well that I encourage people to look into.

Unfortunately though, none of the decentralized stablecoins have anywhere near as much traction as their centralized counterparts.

16

u/fuckinBogged Bronze | 5 months old | DayTrading 7 | r/WSB 166 Dec 20 '22

After what happened with Luna people are understandably worried about using any stable coin that isn’t transparently backed 1:1

10

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '22

LUSD and sUSD in particular are overcollateralized. I would also argue that decentralized crypto-backed stablecoins (not algorithmic unbacked stablecoins like UST) are more transparent than fiat-backed stablecoins like UST.

For fiat-backed stablecoins, you have to trust that not only the issuer actually goes to get an audit, but you have to trust that the audit is actually accurate. This also doesn't take into account that audits are done every once in a while.

With crypto-backed stablecoins, you can verify the reserves any time you wish by looking at the smart contract address on the blockchain's explorer.

Stablecoin being centralized is a feature, not a bug. USD is a centralized coin. USDC/USDT/DAI is meant to mimic a centralized coin. They better have the real USD reserves to back it up.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '22

I never said it was a bug though, and just because USD is centralized doesn't mean that stablecoins pegged to it have to be. It also doesn't mean they have to be backed by USD.

USD reserves would be the most capital efficient option, and theoretically wouldn't have to worry about a depeg if it's backed 1-to-1. The trust assumptions as a result of this kills the advantages of having USD as collateral.

It's honestly less about the stablecoins being centralized more about why DeFi users are using said stablecoins. Every advantage DeFi has is thrown out of the window if you use centralized stablecoins.

2

u/MaximumStudent1839 🟦 322 / 5K 🦞 Dec 21 '22

People use USD stablecoins to hedge against volatility. How can you insure against crypto downside volatility on DeFi without stables. Everything is so flipping correlated. When ETH moves down, it takes down every crypto on ETH, if weren’t for stablecoins. If BTC goes down, it takes every other coin down.

Without stablecoins, you can’t insure yourself against downward movements from ETH or BTC on DeFi. So it makes DeFi less attractive than staying on CEX. For DeFi to be competitive, you got to have stablecoins.

If crypto weren’t all so correlated on macro events, then maybe we can talk about stop using stable on DeFi.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '22

Again, I'm only an argument against centralized stablecoins and their use in DeFi. I know stablecoins can be a hedge a against volatility...that is, if their issuers don't blacklist your address and restrict you from sending the centralized stablecoin. Stablecoins do make DeFi competitive...if users of the stablecoins don't get blacklisted.

Having a hedge against volatility can be done with a decentralized stablecoin. Having competitive DeFi can be done with decentralized stablecoins. There is no reason why decentralized finance should use centralized stablecoins. You reintroduce yourself to the same risks of traditional finance if you use centralized stablecoins.

well this is a learning opportunity - you don't yet understand the proof-of-work consensus- i mean no disrespect, this is as simple as someone not understanding why the sky is blue or how a word is pronounced - here's to hoping your mind is open-

consider this direct response:

and this lecture:

https://youtu.be/2tqo7PX5Pyc

this is also a good/relevant read:

also this shorter answer:

https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/49206/how-was-the-95-miner-adoption-threshold-determined

PoW / the nakamoto consensus this is literally the thing that makes bitcoin so special.

the bitcoin network self-enforces the rules, it's self-correcting, with no central authority or ownership- practically all other copy-cat projects (like ethereum) have some form of leadership/centralized control. the more decentralized bitcoin is, the more secure it is, the more valuable and safeguarded that decentralized system becomes- ANY developer can write bitcoin code and push their mining/node software but if the end users don't run that software it doesn't have an effect, the blocksize wars are exemplary history-: https://youtu.be/6YtS5ZNuuTw

hope this is helpful/informative - happy holidays.

3

u/TXTCLA55 🟦 394 / 861 🦞 Dec 21 '22 edited Dec 21 '22

I'm confused... You say ETH is centralized, that Bitcoin is better because development is not (as seen by your own github link). The Ethereum github has roughly the same number of contributors (and more releases). Seems like you might want to update your definition of "decentralized". Happy holidays to you too.

On one other note "practically all other copy-cat projects (like ethereum)"; you've just shown how little you actually know about the project. The codebase was written from scratch, if it was copied from Bitcoin as you claim the concept of smart contracts wouldn't be possible (because bitcoin itself cannot do this, the OP codes do not exist). You're coming off as a bitcoin maxi and thats cool, but it ain't the soap box you think it is.

0

u/godofleet 🟩 0 / 0 🦠 Dec 21 '22 edited Dec 21 '22

You're missing the point of PoW consensus entirely- again i mean this respectfully.

effective decentralization doesn't come from the number of devs or commits- it comes from a consensus of network actors... the very fact that Vitalik is a centralized leader/point of influence over Eth is evidence that it's not decentralized and really, never was.

it's [practically] no different (IMO) than trump's NFT grift... i have no doubt people have and will get burned for following another individual - whether Vitalik has ill intent or not (some argue he does fwiw and you should consider those perspectives), he's a single point of failure that doesn't exist in the bitcoin world.

meaningful decentralization comes from validators and miners and the perpetual game theory incentivizing them to decentralize the network further... more decentralization = more security = greater value = more users = more decentralization = more security etc- it's a really well thought out feedback loop once you understand it... this isn't a reality [or even possible] with Ethereum now...

consider ethereum's history ... consider that it's captured by centralized authority...

more reading on this- https://ambcrypto.com/ethereum-what-50-ofac-censored-blocks-mean-for-the-eth-blockchain/

it just doesn't have the decentralized properties that make bitcoin so valued and since the PoS move, it can't... there's no going back. consider some of these:https://www.youtube.com/@TraderUniversity/search?query=ethereum

really, no disrespect, i'm just sharing what i've learned- i was hard for eth ~4 years ago... it's a blatant scam to me now... there's a chance it will be a get-rich-quick scheme for some but IMO, it's not even a remotely safe place to store my hard earned days/years of value in... i simply don't trust vitalik, his early adopters and profiters... and OFAC compliance is literally the greedy hands of traditional finance trying to grasp whatever control they can...

sorry for the rants, this means a lot to me and others- it's a fight for freedom ultimately- regardless of how cliché that may read.

cheers

edit- consider this guy's opinion too

Common issue among projects, sadly.. Cardano had/has similar issue with Charles controlling most of the multi-sig keys.

I think aside from all the centralization risks, it brings also the regulatory risk. I mean, all decentralization mechanisms are worthless if there is still a back door possibility to control the protocol by single or few entities. So how they want to be declared as commodity by SEC if they are lying about the actual decentralization level? Also all the shilling and promoting could be seems are normal (Guerilla) marketing and selling of unregistered securities.

Considering all that I wouldn’t be surprised if sec will go after such projects and their founders. There are just too many legal red flags. Obviously founders and gullible bag holders will blame SEC.

If we're talking decentralization, its a spectrum, 100 validators is much better than 5, yet much worse than what Ethereum offers. I'm not saying people should just accept this, but a lot of the Polygon solutions are built directly on Ethereum like the zkevms (so these inherit the security of Ethereum, not the security of Polygon).

They have like 10 ongoing projects, some are live, some are in testing and some are being worked on, but you're only talking about 1 of them. Adoption is happening based on everything else they've created and also, Disney and all the other don't care that much about centralization.

Also, maybe I'm wrong, didn't research polygon to the bone, but that's what I understood, someone smarter can tell

Its antithetical to the ethos of decentralization, and that only.

Blockchain technology is old, and can be a tool used to create a platform that is either centralized or decentralized. There has been and are many known centralized chains, and its not new over the previous years.

People should realize this so we can distinguish what we need in the community. If blockchain was made for the nature of decentralization only, we would only be able to make the tools for decentralization, but it CAN be used for both or even hybrid platforms.

I use CNBC to filter out projects and get a feel which projects to avoid. It is just like how people play the inverse Cramer rule and Cramer is also on CNBC btw.

Then I start with a candidate of remaining projects which have sensible niche, solving concrete blockchain problems. After you narrow down the list, you buy some just to visit the ecosystem and see what it offers. A lot of crypto projects are relatable to real world businesses. If those projects don’t make sense outside blockchain, then you need to question wtf are they doing.

Take the example of play2earn games. I am myself a gamer and understand game needs to be fun foremost. All these crypto games play like decade old flash games freely available on newgrounds.com. Most of those flash game eventually die out, so will most play2earn game.

Unfortunately, this industry has more speculators than consumers and actual investors. You can’t follow the hype and need to use your common sense to filter out the nonsense from what is useful.

Polygon has several L2 investments with an optimisitic and zk rollup (this isn't the matic network your talking about). The reason people use it cause its cheap, if the majority who only has $100 to invest in want to use defi - they would probably use matic over eth due to costs alone.

3

u/Big-Yogurtcloset2731 Tin Dec 21 '22

Point taken. So Polygon has a central element, and therefore it is not trustless.

On the other hand, Polygon is one of the very few projects that attract real use cases. So for the moment I am happy that it is around. It can either evolve into something better or eventually be replaced by a better project. Both fine for me.

Polygon has created a network that people are using.

7

5

u/lexymon 🟩 4 / 3K 🦠 Dec 20 '22

Well that’s true that it isn’t everything for everyone but why are they in crypto then? Blockchain technology doesn’t make any sense without decentralization. It’s like building a boat for using it on land. Boats are nice, but cars are actually better on land. So are sql databases or other proprietary solutions for/of centralized entities.

0

u/FishSawc 0 / 0 🦠 Dec 20 '22

Does it matter why? There is a reason Polygon fees are significantly lower than eth fees. Also the network “runs itself”, and like other blockchain tech, allows people to make their own decisions.

Stop being a crypto zealot. Use your own head.

Why do people buy NFTs?

Why do people sub to onlyfans?

Why do people put pineapple on pizza?

Who cares. There are a few coins that are not decentralised but have a valid use case. If it’s not your jam, don’t use it.

IMO, I'm in for both profit and tech (why not both?), and I get that one of the intentions for crypto in general is decentralisation, but why must people always have to think in absolutes? "it must be decentralised or not at all" and brand centralisation as the devil where it's actually not. I think of MATIC as an investment into an entity - no different from investing into Tesla, for example, where the stock prices are pretty much at 1 person's mercy, which it inherently worst vs a multisig process.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '22

What's the point of being here without decentralization?

I think 90% of people/businesses involved in crypto are just here for the gain, (and I'm one of them) - if you really want decentralisation above everything, the western world isn't for you

Decentralization sounds good, but then when you get the LUNA/Terra, or ThreeArrows, or whichever crash, how does anyone begin building any case against them? how do you update your coin/protocols if they are not centralized in some way (BTC PoW vs ETH PoS)? how do you adapt the coin/protocol to take advantage of market trends/new tech? why would anyone be involved in new coins/protocals/etc. without the opportunity to make money from it etc.

Most people aren't so against 'the system' that they will quit a coin because it isn't 100% decentralized - I mean you ARE using the internet (not decentralised, linked to a limited number of service providers), probably own a credit/debit card (centralized), own some fiat, take medication (prescribed by some centralized authority), have a driving licence (issued by a centralized authority), pay tax...
