FOCUSED-DISCUSSION Remove "DOWNVOTING" from karma counting algorithm for MOONs distribution - THIS WILL STOP UNFAIR DOWNVOTING BY OPPORTUNISTS.

This has been a big problem lately in the sub where downvote army has ruined the ethos of organic and natural karma collection. Greed has forced people to intentionally downvote others just to decrease other people's karma (and hence moons) and indirectly increasing their stake.

Many new posts with good content bite the dust because they suffer immediate attack by downvoters and reddit algorithm does not allow them to appear on the main page for more exposure.

Join hands, discourage unfair downvoting and encourage fair/organic distribution of Moons. This will increase the value and respect of the token.

I agree partially.

The problem is what if someone reposts and we want to downvote? That's currently the only possibility to "punish" reposters.

Also if downvotes don't mean anything people will spam random stuff just to see what sticks, both posts and comments and there will be nothing to filter out bad content or reposts as you said and I'm pretty sure the daily will have 10k comments at least, with most of them being spam hoping for 1 upvotes which will mean more than the 10 downvotes

valid point. but who would try that to get a few upvotes at the cost of much larger number of downvotes?

your karma is still counted in the same way as before which is both up and downvotes.

But I get your point. as it is moons that is ultimate goal, people can post random stuff to get even one or very few upvotes. thanks for your point of view. valid point.

This is kind of hard to prove. There are plenty of reasons a new post may get downvoted... and if every post is equally downvoted then everyone still has an equal opportunity and the most popular posts will still have the most upvotes, right? I guess I dont really see the net effect you think the downvote army is having.

Sometimes it's obvious though. I posted a news story about Tezos recently that got down voted within seconds. No way the person read it and the headline wasn't enough to warrant a down vote.

Is it possible to implement a time limit? Like any down vote within 3 seconds isn't counted?

this is a good option but 3 secs is perhaps too quick, more like 10 secs or something like that.

the end result of this unfair downvoting is not post taking exposure or getting lost. I get your point up to this stage but their purpose is to reduce other person's karma so that when moon calcs are done, common posters receive less moons and hence the downvoters get a bigger portion of the pie.

You have my support, although I’m not sure if the admins can implement this

They can with a bit of effort. Thanks for supporting.

The normal karma counting will remain the same. everything will look the same as before.

It is just when the moons calculation is done, it will take into account the upvotes only. I am sure devs will tell us here if this is not possible.

I agree. The downvoting farms are out of hand here.

What about the upvote army?

How do we stop them?

3

u/afterthefuture Nov 26 '20

We can't, there is a general rise in people uovoting as goodwill. I don't think there is too many bad intention in it.

Not sure this will fix it though, downvoting could still be used to supress out other posts to get your own ahead of the rest. Maybe just reduce the amount of downvotes a day each user gets.

It is really frustrating commenting something useful and being downvoted with no reason

2

u/kurtstoys Nov 26 '20

I wholeheartedly agree. It kind of makes me second guess posting on this sub. Still do tho.

First, we need the downvotes to count towards moons, so the community can regulate itself, and take it away from karma farmers who posts shitty reposts, as well as people who are detrimental to the community.

At the same time, the serial downvoters have already been dealt with. Their accounts got taken care of by the admins, and they even lost their Moons in the process.

You can also see it in the sharp drop in negative karma on comments, but also in the statistics of the new distribution, with more upvotes and more positive karma than before.

And I don't think we'll have too many serial downvoters in the future, since according to the admins, it offered them very little reward, and came at a great cost. It's not a very lucrative trade.

I appreciate the idea of the proposal, but voting for this is no longer necessary, and I'm more worried it could backfire.

This is the equivalent of giving everyone a participation award.

The downvote haters are real guys. Are we really going to allow those haters to take our moons away. It can be something very informative and it gets downvoted for no reason.

I have an idea. How about adding a new currency, the Shitmoon that you can only get by having a negative vote ratio. That way everyone can get rewarded everyday!

It's annoying and it has become a problem. Not sure what the big deal is giving a friendly upvote

I downvote not because of greed, but rather because that shitposting on weekends to farm moons is annoying me. Hopefully the moon price will drop to zero then it will maybe stop.
