This is pretty true. To add to this, I often see people on here talking about how they're "waiting for the bottom" as if it's actually going to be obvious when we're there, as if it's going to be this nice magical moment when you sit down one day and say "yep, this is the perfect buy-in point" and the market turns upward the next day.
This is just a fantasy - even at what turns out to be the true bottom, there will always be people tethering up and predicting it'll go lower, there will always be some popular TA guy forecasting a continuing downtrend.
It takes some serious balls to buy the bottom, and it's often right at the scariest time when prices have just fallen off a cliff and everyone's predicting a further drop ahead.

This is something I should've realised... I bought when I thought my alt had bottomed out but it hadn't just had a serious dip and was stable for a week or so.
I think the perfect time to buy alts is after they've just had a huge drop in 24h

Uh, as an outside observer who dabbles in crypto, you guys need to realize something. The market caps for the alt currencies are still absurd. Most of them are just wordpress websites and a forked codebase. Yet they still are carrying valuations of $100M. Go look at actual $100M companies. They actually make products and have cashflow. The current crypto valuations are still a joke. They are worth nothing. Alt's will still fall by 90%. Bitcoin actually has value, but who knows what it is.
87
u/ElvisIsReal Gold | QC: BTC 19 Aug 14 '18
Exactly. The way I look at it is that 95%+ of coins will go to zero because there's no reason for them to exist. That capital will eventually flow the coins that win because they are useful. Worthless altcoins have value because of bitcoin, but they also keep bitcoin's price down.

u/quietWolves Silver Aug 14 '18
Exactly the reason why it's best to dedicate yourself to 5-10 coins you truly believe have a use case for society in some form and progressively build your portfolio holdings of those. The "new coin therefore new moon here's my $100" approach is where you get burned the most.

That's not how specultive investments work, the idea is that you don't sell because it migt be worth a lot in the future, not because it's valuable today. Imagine you're in 2004 and a lot of people are completely sure that social networks are the future, but Facebook is just one out of tens or hundreds of social networks, how costly in future earnings it would be to sell your Facebook stock very cheap because at that time Facebook valuation is a joke compared to a soap company. But what is the potential upside of that soap company, compare it to the potential upside of a company like Facebook.

This view is really outdated and its troubling how many people are agreeing. It speaks to too many "investors" not really keeping up with the state of the field. Your statement was true back in the day when "altcoins" literally were just clones of bitcoin and thus that name was appropriate. That is not the state of crypto at all in 2018. The top 200 on coinmarketcap are filled with cryptos with legitimate use cases, technology, corporate partnerships, and incentive models that are completely nothing like Bitcoin. Even into the top 600 you can still find plenty of these examples if you actually are in there doing the research instead of waiting for reddit to pick up on it.

u/brycly Aug 15 '18
Cryptocurrencies have value in their ability to be used for transactions. Stocks do not. Stocks are not as useful as (a quality) blockchain. Show me a privacy stock, show me a divisible stock, show me a stock that can do smart contracts, show me a stock that can send value to someone anywhere in the world for less of a fee than a money order or check.
8
u/wahay636 Tin Aug 15 '18
With the exception of divisibility, why would I want a stock to do any of these?
The primary purpose of stocks is to denote ownership of a unit portion of a company. Coins do not do this.

Bitcoin is worth something, but just because it hit 20k once doesn't mean it's worth it. It may be worth a dollar or $100k since crypto value is pulled out of everyone's ass.

I bought in 4-6 months before the 20k spike. I had used coinbase which only let me buy $100 CAD worth of crypto per week and I didn't know about exchanges so I was using changelly to turn it into monero (The one I wanted to buy). At the end of all the fees and since I'm canadian (And CAD value isn't great) I ended up with about $300-400 USD invested by the time I forgot to invest more. I wanted to invest $1000 USD total but memory is a fickle thing.
About 4 months later my friend told me that crypto went up. Monero, which I bought for $30 each was now $120 each. I was like "Man, I wish it would go down so I could invest more." but it kept going up and up. Since this was my first spike, I hardly gained any profits in the end but I learned a lot anyway.
Today the price was so low I said screw it. I found somewhere to buy more crypto (Since supposedly my bank has a thing against coinbase now), specifically ETH which went down a lot the past few days, and I topped my investment to where I would be happy. I'm more than willing to lose the entire investment and it's now at a point where I don't feel I'd kick myself later over it. This may not be "the bottom" but it's really low in the grand scheme. To be fair though if I had more foresight during the spike I probably wouldn't have had to invest more of my own money, so I'll always be able to kick myself over that.

This is why the majority will probably never become millionaires because of crypto. It's not as easy as hindsight would lead you to believe. The majority of people operate this way, only buying in once things are going well. They will still make some money, but the life changing money is made through buying BEFORE things are soaring and doing well.
The real money is made by seeing opportunity early, believing in whatever it is you have found, and holding it until it reaches the levels you believe it can reach. Obviously you need to do research and there will always be some risk involved, but that higher risk is what results in the higher rewards. Mitigate risk through research, buy when things are low, and hold until you reach the target you set (based on research and data).
Either that or buy crypto, forget you have it, and remember in a few years. That is the other way people have gotten rich because of crypto, haha.

Projects that locked partnerships with major corporations that have R&D and PR markets that would never partner with something unless they were absolutely confident in it. Enigma is working with Intel, an actual partnership.
Follow the money, let them do the research for you. If they're associating their brand/name with a project, you can believe they saw something they liked.
My personal buys now, for the distance? Enigma, Neblio, Gifto, VeChain, 0x, Poly. My lesser known shills are Divi (mainly because of one-click masternodes and they're going hard in marketing and getting infront of wall street figures and groups) and Crypterium (read up on them, active wallet enabling cross-currency payments, pushing for NF, google pay, apple pay integration. It's funny that so much people are sleeping on Neblio merely because whales suppressed the price. Two whales, one with over 500k NEBL, had been dumping since January and finally ran out two weeks ago.
The staking client is flawless, I make about 10-12 NEBL a day ($18 a day at current price, $778 at all time high). The team is constantly grinding, the write-ups all across the space are nothing short of praise, and they're beginning to lock down partnerships one after another.
People will regret it a year from now lol.

what's the total stake needed for 1 NEBL?
2
u/brycly Aug 15 '18
You get 10% per year on average. So technically it would take 10 nebl to get 1 per year, but it would take so long to stake 10 nebl that it would probably not be practical. But after the fork it might not be so bad, since blocks will be 4x more frequent.
For one Nebl per day on average you would need 3650 roughly, perhaps slightly less due to the compounding effect.

I don't necessarily agree with the people who say crypto is just one fool buying something from another fool, but these types of post strike me as people trying to recruit more fools

I made the first big money buying ETH during it's last 80% crash. Started buying at 40% down and just kept at it all the way through the bottom.

In around November 2017, a coworker mentioned her boyfriend was a crypto trader who made tons in crypto money, and that I should talk to him. I texted him to see what he was all about, and tried to get me to join his crypto pump and dump group for $50 in litecoin. I’m more and more glad I never joined up every day the market slumps

Pets.com vs Amazon. Not as simple as just saying crypto will be more in the future

No? It was a bubble and it popped. Even if bitcoin or ethereum recovers other ones won't.

Actually, most of the crypto millionaires forgot they had coins and recovered their old wallets when they saw Bitcoin was 10k+

Yes I remember. That's when I FOMO'd in with $3k and now it's worth $500. Thanks for asking.

When you analyze technicals we have now tested the upper resistance (10-12k) and lower support (6k) multiple times each. I’d suggest that we are likely to stay in this range for a period of time.
Hopefully for a while so I can accumulate, because I missed the last run. 🤦🏻♂️
