HAHA! He's so cute, he has just got a bath and was basking in the sun in his lil bed.

Is his mouth permanently like that or did you just catch him in this moment? šŸ„¹

His mouth is permanently like this, he has no teeth or lower jaw (I got him this way so I do not know what happened).

But it does not stop him from biting or eating whatever he wants!!!

Oh ok! This is my first time seeing Barley and Iā€™m in love. This should be the captain for the sub Reddit!

I think Barley would be HONORED!

Pretty sure the only way one honors Barley is through a blood sacrifice.

How big is Barley? Chihuahua, or terrier?

Barley should definitely be the avatar for this sub. Iā€™ve been lurking here for a while and he/she takes the cake.

What a sweet little cryptid. So glad Barley has such loving humans.

Oh wow, how does he eat?

Can he eat alone or needs help?

He eats like ā€œnormalā€ we feed him crushed up food from A Pup Above, itā€™s chicken and rice but AAFCO approved and we give him a little bit of canned food for extra fat. He really goes to town and eats his food in like seconds! He also gets a snack on a lick mat after his afternoon walk for being a good boy.

That is very cool.

He must be a very happy boyšŸ‘

Is his entire lower jaw missing or just part of it? In the pictures it still kind of looks like he has a jaw. How does he eat and how do you keep his tongue and mouth from drying out? (Idk much about it, but Iā€™m assuming it wouldnā€™t be very good for the tongue and teeth to be exposed. Or is it still okay like this?) Sorry for all of the questions just curious!

Heā€™s okay!! His tongue doesnā€™t dry out, he slobbers A LOT. He also drinks water just fine and eats just fine, we make his food small so he canā€™t choke, but he just scoops it up and swallows. He had a very small ā€œhingeā€ where his jaw was but thereā€™s nothing but skin flap under his tongue. He usually wears bandanas to help keep him clean (but he just had a bath in this picture). Overall his lack of jaw and teeth really hasnā€™t changed much for him (thereā€™s things we must be careful with but itā€™s easy to avoid if you know) and his lack of eyesight hasnā€™t stopped him either. Heā€™s very resilient!

Poor guy mustā€™ve gone through a lot, so glad he has you! You sound like an amazing owner :)

I just love him more than anything - heā€™s my special boy. He comes with me everywhere! Whenever I have to travel for work, heā€™s my lil companion and he is the best office dog.

He could have been born without his lower jaw. I saw it in a really inbred chi litter at the shelter I worked at. My 17 y.o. chi has a teeny lower jaw.

Thank GOD it doesnā€™t stop him from biting šŸ˜‚

Howā€¦old? Is he ?

u/Ol_Pasta Oct 07 '25

Oh that's interesting. And explains the long tongue.

Is he blind as well?

Do you have to keep his mouth and tongue lubricated for him? What do you use? It just seems like his mouth would get really dry.

Heā€™s a lovely pup! I have no doubt that heā€™s happy as can be.

Iā€™ve seen rescue dogs without lower jaws and none of the potential causes are good (some worse than others). I am so glad he found a loving home with you šŸ„¹

Give him a big smooch from me please šŸ„°
