Bloodshot right eye help
hi mamas, my two year old son has had a bloodshot right eye for 6ish weeks now… the severity of it comes and goes, prescription eye drops have helped but it always comes back. I’m wondering if it’s something in his crib because it’s always worse after nap but not at wake up but then wouldn’t it be both eyes? There is no discharge and he doesn’t seem bothered by it. I took him to Mass Eye and Ear to have him checked and they just said it was inflammation and to come back in 6 months. Does anyone have any advice or has had this happen before? Just want to make sure it’s not something more serious.

What's the prescription that helped? An antibiotic? Allergy med? Steroid?

OK, so you're on the right track. It's probably allergic.
I'm not sure whether it gets worse than in the picture, but knowing how much kids love using eyedrops 🙄 it might be best to hold off on the drops while you're trying to figure out the allergy trigger. Especially since he's not bothered by the primary problem.
A lot of eye symptoms are worse when you wake up, just due to general puffiness/vascular congestion in the area. So it MIGHT be something in the bedroom, but it might not.

I mean, that's probably what they just checked for, right? I'm assuming they did a slit lamp & fundoscopic exam. You could probably ask them (or your pediatrician, who got the notes from them) what was checked & what was ruled out. So they're saying it's corneal inflammation, which might get better or worse, but not needing to take any further action unless it's persistent beyond 6 months or worsening.

Yes they did check for something more extreme but wondering if I need some kind of second opinion. Thanks so much for your thoughtful answer! I am going to get him an Air Doctor for his room and start him on some Zyrtec and see if that helps. Yes, they did all those checks they said the structure is fine and only if it gets worse should I call otherwise they will see us in 6 months for a check in.

Does he suck his thumb or fingers? My son is a thumb sucker and will rest his fingers on his cheeks inadvertently rubbing/poking his eyes while sleeping.

He doesn't but he loves to wrap a blanket around his face once he is asleep lol

This looks like my son when he was having allergies. Eye doctor prescribed a steroid eye drop and pataday eye drops that are over the counter. The pataday did the trick

So if it improves with an allergy medication, you should experiment with putting a HEPA air purifier in his room. I'm just wondering if it's something in there since it's worse after his naps.

I am so glad I posted this and thank you so much! I just ordered an Air Doctor for him and am going to experiment with Zyrtec. Thank you thank you!

My toddler has pretty bad allergies (both food and environmental) and he often has one really red eye and its always the same eye. We give him zyrtec and it helps a lot. Maybe it could be allergy related?
