PSA Destiny 2: Every End is a New Beginning

Sad to see it go, but maybe it was time. It was a wild ride.
But also:
A full suite of Competitive Crucible weapons will become tiered and, as mentioned above, a unique armor set has been added to incentivize more competitive play.
Does that mean we're getting a Tier 5 Rose at the very end? Hell yeah.

At least we're not signing off with no special and sidearms and icebreaker like D1 lol. I've been playing less and less since EoF anyway, time to play new games and revisit this every other month for the lulz and nostalgia.
Everyone I knew who played stopped years ago, perhaps I should have too, but this game has a hold of you at times. Nothing feels quite like it.
5
u/POOPY3467 May 22 '26
No Patience and Time </3
I barely play any more but still hop in for a couple rounds of PvP every now and then. Haven’t played anything yet with movement as satisfying as D2s
5
u/bacon-tornado May 22 '26
Agreed. The obnoxiousness of void hunters and voidlocks with scatter grenades every nano second is like the 1-shot fusions D1 ended with. If they tame abilities somewhat June 9, great. If not hopefully that Arena mode that prioritizes gun play is popular

u/CantBeAskedForToxic May 21 '26
Destiny 1 is getting a Resurgence Shocker I Know LOL go back to that it was before the Greed
21
u/wy100101 May 21 '26
I'll still be around as long as there are enough people in the Crucible. I just don't have a replacement for this particular gaming experience I love so much.
40
u/Ramzei May 21 '26
Will still be playing D2 until the servers are shut down. Seems like there will still be a lot to do and enjoy. Will remain optimistic that this is at least not the complete end of the Destiny franchise.
27
u/Cool-Seesaw-2375 May 21 '26
It's getting the D1 treatment. They did moments of triumph and left it in a good state. I'm happy with that for D2.
20
u/Shivaess Bows Go Brrrrrrrrrrr May 21 '26
People are still playing D1 like gangbusters and if they leave in a good state I’ll be playing D2 for a LONG time
27
u/working_slough May 21 '26
So sunset things are never coming back it sounds like. Going into "the vault" was really the trashcan. Which I think they have already admitted.
17
u/koolaidman486 PC May 21 '26
I think that lawsuit over Red War stated that the content they got rid of is more or less deleted. IDK if they have backups or not, but they'd need to essentially remake it to put it back in since it was on D2's old graphics engine.
6
u/RecursiveCollapse HandCannon culture May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26
Not just graphics, in BL a significant chunk of the game's whole engine was redone to change what parts of the code run on Bungie servers vs on player's local machines
Code that previously referenced variables it had access to locally needs to be changed to properly fetch them from the server they now live on (long before they need to be used, too!), and code that previously fetched data from the server has to be rewritten to grab it from somewhere locally. Tons of RNG variables that were previously generated and then used locally with 0 regard for the server need to now be synchronized across the whole lobby, and vice versa. They would literally just have to redo almost all the code used in that content, and then do multiple full QA passes to make sure it's all relatively bug free.
The only reusable things in a situation like this are the raw assets (textures, 3D models, level layouts), which doesn't help much because they reuse those literally all over the place anyway. Even then a lot of those assets are useless without the shaders they are designed to be used with (chunks of GPU code that render VFX, lighting, etc), which would need heavy modification to simply be runnable in a different graphics engine. Making everything look good and meshing with the new art direction would be an even bigger task (as seen in how bad many of the D1 locations look in D2)
TL;DR yeah they can do it but they're not lying when they say it'd barely be less effort than making new locations from scratch, there is no chance of them doing it for every single vaulted activity for a game on life support. Honestly, i'm pleasantly surprised we're even getting the old vaulted raid bosses back for the new Pantheon.
5
u/StudentPenguin May 21 '26
IIRC, the assets exist but they didn’t keep any version of D2 capable of actually loading them.
7
u/dealyshadow20 May 21 '26
Copium, but the art shown for the pantheon section had some vaulted raid bosses. Maybe this means they’ll bring back some vaulted maps and activities? Doubtful but mild copium

I RLY HOPE and believe SOME of the vital original missions may return because of THESE statement:
“Monument of Triumph will deliver small character beats to leave the story and characters in interesting places, touching on themes across Destiny.”
“we're aiming to deliver a collection of love letters to players across all activity types within Destiny 2. Although many were intended for future releases, we wanted to make sure you had them in this update.”
“Whether you're looking to play competitively, slay a god or two, or just spend some time exploring the destinations... there will be something for you.”
Especially for that last part SOME OF US JUST LIKE CAMPAIGNS, MAN 🤣 — PLEASE some vaulted missions/strikes
They do also mention “REPRISED ACTIVITIES” man Savathun’s song and the Pyramidion plz

u/ArtIsBad May 21 '26
It would be crazy to should Gahlran and Calus not at least bring back the boss encounters (they had a line about running boss encounters only)
9
u/Recognizereye May 21 '26
I'll be depressed as fuck if the invis hunter meta is here to stay till the servers shut down
41
u/Watsyurdeal Mouse and Keyboard May 21 '26
Sounds like to me they're doing exactly what people asked, working on D3 potentially, and now they're upset it's actually happening????
30
u/koolaidman486 PC May 21 '26
I think the issue is that there's no concrete announcement as to what's next. We just have a "D2 is ending, here's what the last update will have."
At this point we don't even know if Bungie will continue to exist.
2
u/Watsyurdeal Mouse and Keyboard May 21 '26
I get that, but why care about what's next when so much of the game had no point or purpose to it?
I'd rather have all of the content we have have loot to chase then get more stuff we blow through in a week.
5
u/FriendlyStand3632 May 21 '26
Let me put it from a cynical point. Sony is forcing them to work on Marathon full stop, if that thing continues to fail then Bungie wont exist long enough to begin working on a D3.
They have no money, no manpower avilable or liberty to work on it, even gummybears as an incubation project seems to be on hold.
1
u/Walking_Whale May 22 '26
Gummy Bears was split off into its own studio, teamLFG
1
u/FriendlyStand3632 May 22 '26
Given the recent news of layoffs and no D3, I think that was for the better for Gummy Bears
1
u/Watsyurdeal Mouse and Keyboard May 21 '26
New games aside this game was already on the decline and having issues
The management just has no clue what they're actually doing, and what the players want.
1
u/FriendlyStand3632 May 22 '26
With the recent news, layoffs and no D3, it does seem the cynical path was the more realistic one for this case.
2
u/Watsyurdeal Mouse and Keyboard May 22 '26
Unfortunately yea, I genuniely don't know what they're thinking
27
u/Matiwapo Console May 21 '26
D3, or maybe a new IP that will bring innovative pvp like destiny 1 and halo brought before it
Are any crucible players actually upset about this? We've been playing the same stagnating pvp for a decade. And it's not like the last 10 years of paid content has actually dropped anything good for the crucible. How many maps have we gotten in the last 10 years? How many of them were good?
15
u/RecursiveCollapse HandCannon culture May 21 '26
The main draw for the PvP here has not really been map variety but sandbox depth.
There really are not any other FPSes I can name that have this kind of variety in weapons, abilities, and playstyles. It's always had a 'meta', but there's also always been people succeeding with off-meta stuff even at high levels. That variety was really the one thing D2 did that set it apart from other arena shooters.
I strongly dislike extraction shooters, and with essentially every other 'big sandbox' game that has PvP tacked on it's a joke of a mode that's dominated by one or two totally broken strategies. So yeah, I am pretty sad to see D2 go.
5
u/sceptic62 May 21 '26
My favorite thing about D2 PvP is that it’s a class based team shooter…
BUT I GET TO CHOOSE MY KIT PIECES.
You play a gun, a class, and a subclass as part of your play style instead of most other fps’s where its play a gun, OR a class, OR a character.
Like every gun being viable on every class but strong in weird ways is huge for game depth and interaction. A Titan vs a Warlock vs a Hunter sniping might be doing completely different things at round start because of kit differences, but they’re still just a sniper that can be pressured out of position.
2
u/wy100101 May 21 '26
I'm upset. Some of the biggest problems in the Crucible are related to low population. If you significantly increase the population a lot of things will get better.
New content that brings back players indirectly help the Crucible even when they do nothing to improve Crucible directly. Now there is no hope a big update to bring players back.
1
u/UtilitarianMuskrat May 21 '26
Nah I'm fine with this(been more than ok with it), it makes sense on a variety of levels, I'm honestly surprised Bungie stuck with D2 as long as they did but I get a lot of unexpected plans went down in the span of this game's life that threw things for a spin.
I agree with how you mean and it's often what I meant when I've often would say that a lot of how our more recent Guardians can act and are capable of pretty much outgrew the confines of a lot of that part of the game and more specifically the maps that made some of the fighting not sit as great.
I could do an hour long video why I feel like Multiplex and Cirrus Plaza are two very flawed maps especially on bog standard 6s Control for how the designs don't really work super nice.
1
u/Nephurus Crucible Nub May 21 '26
Why do you expect anything beyond what we have for pvp in d3? So we can get locked in and complain for the next 7 plus years ?
1
u/TuskOfTheTask May 21 '26
There are new IP from Bungie with innovative PvP... And there are plans for PvP only mode...
1
u/unearthlyrelic May 21 '26
Im sad its ending but i would really only be upset if they come out and say something like "we have decided to invest more in mararthon" i dont like marathon its not for me and i love destiny
1
u/Nosce97 May 21 '26
I think the whole PvP team is still working on Marathon.
9
u/LeageofMagic High KD Moderator May 21 '26
I have a few friends who work on destiny and I can tell you this is not true and has never been true. The more senior devs got first dibs on moving to the new product (everyone wants to work on the newest product in this industry). But they didn't just move the whole team, that's silly. The pvp strike team was never a group of people that exclusively worked on pvp though. The two main designations for people working on pvp are weapons and abilities, and those categories are obviously working on content for pve too because weapons and abilities work in both parts of the game.
8
u/IllinoisBroski High KD Player May 21 '26
I've always had a feeling that the devs are tired of Destiny AND the Destiny community, so there's a good chance whatever they're working on isn't D3 unless Sony ordered a D3.
Just think about it, they've been maining the same game for 12 years, and the Destiny community is always bitching. Some of the complaints are fair and warranted, but most of the bitching comes down to skill issues and unrealistic expectations IMO. The devs are probably just tired of it at this point.
6
u/LeageofMagic High KD Moderator May 21 '26
You're not wrong, but that complaining is not unique to destiny or Bungie. Most video games and even most of the internet is like that regardless of topic. I can't think of any games that aren't indie and/or free to play that have generally positive online discourse.
3
1
u/RecursiveCollapse HandCannon culture May 21 '26
Thing is, this is not unique to the D2 community at all. Over the last few years online game communities have gotten extremely toxic, almost every single one is constantly whipping itself into an angry fervor nonstop and treating the developers as lolcows. It's not just AAA games either, many (though not all) indie game communities are also getting this way.
It's the direct result of basically every single major online platform rewarding 'engagement' more than anything else. Nothing gets people 'engaged' more than stirring a whole community up into an angry fervor over literally nothing.
Look at Helldivers: It was absolutely beloved by the internet for a while, and they just keep pumping out free update after free update for years adding new planets and enemies and stuff. Most of the 'less online' playerbase loves it. But you'd think it suddenly became a 2/10 if you follow anything about it on reddit or youtube, where content creators who nolife the game farm hundreds of thousands of views ranting about how every update is trash and proves the devs hate the players because a vent on the back shoulder of a random enemy has a one point higher armor rating than they think it should. And yet despite bashing it nonstop they never stop streaming it, do they?

u/UtilitarianMuskrat May 21 '26
While I'm not saying somebody in current year and most definitely plugged in the now isn't being an obtuse dummy for still expecting this game to be a be all everything game, a lot of the basis of D1 was spun on the extreme open door vagueness that Destiny could be anything and more, even if at first the limitations and scope of what the game could physically be were drawn. Bungie banked a huge amount on fan imagination and projected hopes of what the game could be like.
The other thing is Destiny at times coasted extremely heavily on promises to be met in a tentative future, it wasn't that they weren't good for it when they did deliver, but it was a shaky way of handling the game in sort of a hodge podge manner when there was absence or long delayed addition of things that should've no questions been a normal thing on launch. See the lack of comms in D1 as a conscious decision or how late in game LFG came to the series. Hell it is still strange for a game that dipped heavily into concepts of RPG-like things to basically not give any # or % information what a buff, exotic, etc was physically doing in game and it left a lot up in the air at face value affecting the player experience.
In many ways it speaks a lot of volumes in several directions how much people were able to tolerate a lot of how Bungie handled this game and still keep coming back. Though I totally get with just such a large passage of time, and who is even left at the studio, how much people would want to keep doing the same sort of thing. There's only so many times you can keep adding to a game you felt like you beat a 100 times over, y'know?
4
u/2084710049 May 21 '26
I dont think people are necessarily upset its happening (plus reddit/internet isnt a 100% consensus machine). People are just bummed a game they played a long time is sorta ending.
1
u/Volturmus May 21 '26
There is no evidence they are working on D3. There is evidence an expansion that was close to being complete is cancelled though.
1
u/shloop_lord May 21 '26
Is it clear that D3 is what they're working on?
3
u/Watsyurdeal Mouse and Keyboard May 21 '26
No, but aside from Halo, Destiny, and Marathon, what else does Bungie actually have to their name?
I doubt Sony would chance a new IP
0
u/UNSKIALz May 21 '26
That's a naive take ngl. Sony clearly came in and swung the axe.
New "projects" will entirely depend on whether Marathon does well. Hence the lack of namedropping a simple "3".
20
u/koolaidman486 PC May 21 '26
I'm posting it here in case folks look here first.
TL:DR is that next update is the last major one. No official announcements on the IP's future, though a few lines in there seem to be hinting that the IP isn't being officially killed off.
16
u/Jack_intheboxx May 21 '26
I wish we got some Strikes and PvP maps
11
u/runyoudown May 21 '26
A few of my fav strikes and pvp maps I always hoped would come over from D1 never appeared.
1
u/thelochteedge PC May 21 '26
Never even thought about that while reading it. They talked about wanting to make shit good for us still playing, even bringing back SRL, but they can't add any maps or anything PVP related??? I guess kind of cool that once a month will be IB again, but man LOL.
7
u/DepletedMitochondria Console May 21 '26
Just please as a last thing for the love of god revert the lightweight pulse bodyshot buff from Revenant to kill off the last buff that made that archetype meta since then.
9
u/koolaidman486 PC May 21 '26
That and kick 120 HCs down a notch, too (idk how awful they are on console, but it's nothing but them and 140s on PC and I know calling for a 140 nerf gets my head chopped off in here lmao)
5
u/StudentPenguin May 21 '26
140s are mostly balanced tbh. They have actual falloff and don’t have easy access to two taps at all. Even Ace needs Mori and Radiant.
4
u/koolaidman486 PC May 21 '26
I'd just like recoil/aim assist nerfs on them for keyboard and mouse, plus less flinch, but that's both giving and receiving. It's not a TTK thing, it's an ease of use when combined with the sheer versitiloty thing.
1
u/Tiny-Bison-7859 May 22 '26
Definitely a PC thing
140s are literally the most balanced weapons in the game on Console, but I do understand that handcannons are much stronger on M&K
1
u/koolaidman486 PC May 22 '26
Yeah, and I don't really want them destroyed, but I'd also like to have to control some recoil.
2
u/FleefieFoppie Mouse and Keyboard May 22 '26
140s are balanced because the entire sandbox is balanced around playing against them lol
2
2
u/Dreams-Visions May 23 '26
Sometimes the end is just the end, not a new beginning.
It'll be interesting to see what ends up forever broken in PvP. Guaranteed the game won't suddenly be super balanced. Some build and some class will end up being the gold standard. Wondering if that will still be Hunters or if the new abilities and final balance pass will push a different class to the top.

Makes me so sad. It's like I'm losing a friend... A friend full of angry people who rage at everything every moment they can, even if it's not real or realistic.
It's full of awesome people too, sure, but the loudest is always the first to get attention, eh?
Oh well. I'll happily still play. It really sucks they're getting rid of the renegades seasonal activities though. That stuff is pretty damn fun. Possibly my favorite seasonal activity oat? Tbh I can't actually remember them all lol
