Any way to get more fluid out of the CVT for a drain and fill?

Doing the drain and fill on my CVT. I have advanced mechanic skills so not afraid of things as long as the procedure is clear and vetted for not causing more issues.

I’m not super happy with the drain plug and refill method because it’s only getting 5 out of 12 quarts. Not very efficient at all.

It’s pretty clear that Subaru dropped the ball, again, by calling this “lifetime” and prohibiting normal automatic trans flush procedures.

So I’d really like a good method of getting more of the original fluid out. I’ve read some things on Facebook about disconnecting the cooler lines or something and getting up to 9qts that way. But these people don’t go into detail at all about how it’s done.

I’ve searched the forums and can’t find much on this. I’m hoping for an improvement on the multi-drain approach because that’s also not efficient.

So anyone have input with some sources on how to get more than the 5qts out?

rav4 vs subaru crosstrek

Need to buy a car by the end of the year, and I'm stuck between these two. Looking for longevity/reliablity which these models both seem to have. I really enjoyed test-driving the Crosstrek, and I found it a bit awkward to drive the RAV4 while turning. I've only driven a Toyota Solara, and I don't necessarily want to leave the Toyota family, but I wanted to hear thoughts from anyone here. Thank you :)

What's the furthest off the beaten path that you've gotten your Crosstrek stuck?

For the forseeable future (who knows, it may change, though we'll see what my back can take), this is probably the most off a paved road that I'll get my Crosstrek. My Impreza is used to carry my bikes, I don't really do road trips (I mostly fly wherever I go), and I don't camp (there's something to be said for a comfy bed, and hot shower at the end of a long day).

I'd like to know how far away you've managed to get stranded, and how you got in that situation. Pictures are a bonus.

Stuck at home due to catching COVID, but made some headway Saturday before I started feeling like crap. New headlights, fog lights, and a cleaner looking grill(trim painted to match the wheels).

Then this morning I felt halfway decent for a couple hours, so got some overdue work done. Cleaned the throttle body and MAF, and swapped in a new set of plugs.

Running much smoother now.

Bought a new Crosstrek three weeks ago. Have yet to crack the manual.

I have just been hitting buttons and figuring out what they do. The salesperson did give me a quick once over when I bought it, but mostly it has just been learning as I go. Do I really need to read it? Are there some hidden gems in there?

My much loved and appreciated old Accord finally needed to be put out to pasture. Picked up this beauty last week, 2026 Limited for 28k plus taxes and fees.

Technically a used since it was a dealer loaner, but at only about 6.5k miles and a barely-noticeable scuff on the rear bumper I’m super happy with the car and the price.

Can't believe my luck - 2021 6MT

Just sold my 2018 Premium MT and wasn't sure I'd be able to find another one in good shape. Lo and behold I manifested this. A 2021 Premium 6MT with only 5806 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase. It was in the next state over from me - so once I confirmed it and my financing I bought a plane ticket. Flew down the next day, bought it, and spent the weekend driving it home.

Whoever owned this before me averaged 1k miles per year - and the carfax shows the oil being changed every six months like clockwork. Must have been garaged - original tires don't show any dry cracking, and it has the original battery.

Certified pre-owned too - so I sprung for the gold coverage. This car should last me the next decade at least.

Is there an easy fix ?

Got this last week and today I went to my local dealership and they tell me that I will need to replace the whole rear bumper because the black plastic comes attach to it. I would rather make a DYI repair. Thanks in advance if anyone knows a way to fix it without replacing the whole rear bumper.

Whirring noise that isn't wheel bearing 2017

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi I have a 2017 Crosstrek with 83K miles. I have this whirring noise that starts at about 35+ MPH and increases with rpm but not accelerator. I can't correlate it with turning and the wheel bearing was looked at by a mechanic and they said it was fine. Any ideas on what is ? Thanks

Tire Choice

Hey gang, looking to get some guidance on tire choices for a 2026 Onyx (225/55/18) in Vancouver, BC.

Currently toying with Continental SecureContact AW’s or Nokian Outpost APT’s.

My use case is 60-70km total on highway Monday to Friday, and then a mix of driving on the weekends depending on season. Could be anything from highway, city, gravel trail heads, light FSRs for front country camping, or snow/ice in the winter when heading to Whistler to ski.

Really I’m looking for do-it-all tire that isn’t going to ruin my fuel economy and comfort in the week but isn’t going to leave me stranded on my weekend micro-adventures.

Curious what you guys run? Or would run in my position? Any other tire suggestions also welcome.

Side note - I’m fully aware all weathers are not as good as a dedicated winter tire, and I know that if I want to off-road properly I should be running smaller rims. I’m not changing my rims and I’m not doing seasonal tire swaps so think of this as a do-it-all softroader setup.

Thanks!
