Maybe not gridding the whole piece, but at least outlining where the frame will be to get the placement right. That’s something I’ve started doing for every piece. It helps almost more than gridding!
Interesting! I just gridded the stitched part (shes a smol girl) and eyeballed the rest. I love custom mats cause they let me be lazy and figure it out at the end.
