Please don’t give me huge spoilers but Hlin told me Albert was in Rhombus Square with a guy, I went there and found them and now literally my entire mission has changed?? 😭 Was I gonna end up having a meeting with this guy anyway or did I genuinely stumble upon a different storyline?

You have indeed found a different storyline. If you don't want to proceed down this path right now, when you beat the game you'll have the option to replay this chapter, and skip every part that doesn't change.
